Fantastic news for the country that kids from regular or challenging backgrounds who excel academically can have their talents nurtured without having to pay insane private school fees or join the middle class scrums which leave most Grammar schools insanely oversubscribed .

I went to BGS. Great school, education, sports and Dyche - like culture. Most of us were scruffs - only about 5 toffs out of about 500.

St Teds was run as though it was a grammar school and a secondary school in the same buildings. Greek letters for the top 3 or 4 forms in each year who were all streamed for GCE O Levels in 5th year and common letters for the bottom 3 or 4 forms who were targetting CSE exams at the end of 4th year before leaving

Re: Grammar school
Ive got a plan lets actually implement all of the 1944 Education Act and build more Technical colleges. This plan part of a three tier secondary education system was abolished in the early sixties due to lack of foresite leaving the flawed Secondary modern/ Grammar school model
In recent times Lord Baker ,the pillock who invented teacher training days, pushed for Secondary technical colleges to be reintroduced using that much loved Tory model of private funding.
The 3 tier system where technically gifted youngsters were educated at a14 to 18 college produced engineers.Nowadays its usually run post 16 and in our area Reading its a very successful idea.
I noticed a college on way in near Bannies chip shop.

Yes Woodley, there's definitely some kind of technical college on Trafalgar along from Banny's, where loads has been spent regenerating in "The Triangle", but I'm not sure how well used or well attended it is or even if it's proved to be something of a white elephant. Maybe others know more.

Re: Grammar school
Surely its all about the quality of teaching and leadership.Four of my years at BGS were crap..the last two weren't bad and I had two or three teachers in particular who got me the results I needed...Vic Stott for French and Cardew Robinson/Joe Chaplow for English .The first head was a divisive nob head called Hewitt...he tried to get the school playing Rugby Union instead of soccer and he also refused to let us enter the Keighley Cup competition when we had comprehensively beaten all the local schools ..including St.Mary's ...my only chance ever to play on the Turf .My brother did play there later when Stokes had been at the helm for a few years .He managed to instill a sense of pride in the school and I enjoyed my last two years a bit more. If Comprehensives can provide the right balance of leadership and academic excellence why bring back Grammar Schools. All my kids have thrived in the current system and done well in life after leaving.Convince me that they could have done better .

School isnt everything. And certainly isnt anywhere near as important in life (tests and subjects) etc as what is made out.
Of course education is extremely important. But more important than the curriculum are the teachers, style of teaching, pupils, exrra curricular activities and varied backgrounds etc.
Imo of course.

In my time at school we had Secondary Moderns, a Technical High School (Towneley) and Grammar/Girls High School. Also pay/boarding schools. Something for everyone. The system was considered to be world class.

Re: Grammar school
I went to Burnley Grammar and Mike Garlick was in my year at school. It changed to Habergham about 3 years after I left. I can see the appeal of having a Grammar school in each town, currently, you have to send your kids to out of town Grammar schools.
Re: Grammar school
I am guessing we were contemporaries- were you there from 1955-61? I did 55-62.Foreverly Claret wrote:Surely its all about the quality of teaching and leadership.Four of my years at BGS were crap..the last two weren't bad and I had two or three teachers in particular who got me the results I needed...Vic Stott for French and Cardew Robinson/Joe Chaplow for English .The first head was a divisive nob head called Hewitt...he tried to get the school playing Rugby Union instead of soccer and he also refused to let us enter the Keighley Cup competition when we had comprehensively beaten all the local schools ..including St.Mary's ...my only chance ever to play on the Turf .My brother did play there later when Stokes had been at the helm for a few years .He managed to instill a sense of pride in the school and I enjoyed my last two years a bit more. If my memory serves me correctly Rugby was introduced when we moved to the Byron Street site in 1959 when I thought Stokes took over from Hewitt who was so lacking in drive that i doubt he would change anything. However having Googled heads of BGS all I found was an obituary to Bernard Stokes who came to the school in 1961 which I would question. Other septuagenarians may be able to set the record straight on that.
I recall Stokes and Deputy Carter being around for most of my time in the VIth form but I may be wrong.
By then we had a new Latin master- Mr Simpson who when asked in 1960 gave us the phrase "numquam de angulo notamus" given our abilities then and presently.
Stokes was good for the school although if he didn't arrive until 1961 then it was Hewitt who messed up.
At the most glorious time for BFC since the 1920's who would start Rugby in place of soccer at its Grammar School?

Doubt this will work but I recognise a couple of the pupils on the film both now have passed on. It does if you copy and paste. Taken by Sam Hanna

Re: Grammar school
Yes,indeed. I started BGS in 1961 & had to play rugby in the first (and maybe 2nd) year. Id played loads of footy and was a regular on TM by then but never played rugby. I was bloomin' annoyed but then (my 2nd or 3rd year) footy was offered as an alternative in winter and just about everybody went that way.At the most glorious time for BFC since the 1920's who would start Rugby in place of soccer at its Grammar School?
I hated it at the time but later was glad to have learnt a bit about the egg-chasing as I played a fair few "friendly" games & love to watch nowadays.
Byron Street building was pretty new then and I can only remember Stokes as the Head.

I started there August '60, and Hewitt was head. Noel B Stokes took over later in the year.

Re: Grammar school
Nobby Stokes was a good leader and liked his sport (a Wolverhampton man). In about 1965 we had an "experimental" term, playing rugby for games lessons only (not school team games, which remained footy. It didn't catch-on but satisfied several curiosities.

That's a lot of the problem. There are a lot of senior figures in education that think that if a system works for some children, like it has for your children, then it is the right system for all children. That was the whole point of comprehensive education - one size fits all.Foreverly Claret wrote:All my kids have thrived in the current system and done well in life after leaving.Convince me that they could have done better .
But surely children are not all the same?
