Can we keep hold of McNeil ?
19 years old. Scoring goals in the Premierleague. Getting better each game. Impressed whilst training with the England first team.
Unfortunately for me the answer is no. Once one of the big teams come sniffing and they offer him wages double what we can offer he will be off and you cant blame the lad.
His valuation is going up everyweek. How much would you accept for him realistically ? Id say £25 million.

Re: Can we keep hold of McNeil ?
If Chelsea are turning down £35m for someone who hasn’t even started a Premier League game then we’re looking at a lot more than £25m for McNeil with 5 years on his contract.

I’d say just enjoy the win today watch it on motd perhaps tonight and leave that question to another time.JimMcDonald wrote:19 years old. Scoring goals in the Premierleague. Getting better each game. Impressed whilst training with the England first team.

Its the Burnley way at its best. The problem comes when the production line produces nothing. Enjoy it while he's here.

Re: Can we keep hold of McNeil ?
I'm thinking similar thoughts to this. He's a good player - he's not Messi. Other clubs I am sure, will be seeing him as his first season and would still be a risk to offer mega money. Especially if he's not guaranteed football - which will matter a lot to McNeil.South West Claret. wrote:I’d say just enjoy the win today watch it on mod perhaps tonight and leave that question to another time.
If we stay up (still a job to do), then I think he'll stay for at least another season. Then who knows. But for the next 12 months? Of course we can.

He's here as long as he wants to be, but the more we play him, the better he gets and will be coveted more

Don’t think it would do him any good to go too soon. He can keep improving with us first.

I guess it depends on the age. He joined us at 14.Aclaret wrote:Are we right in singing he's one of our own ? Wasn't he one of Man U 's
Re: Can we keep hold of McNeil ?
The key question for me is how far can McNeil improve?
Hopefully far enough to continue playing well (and improving)
into next season in the premiership and still with us.
Another good season with us and then someone might come knocking
and it could be 20m+.
He's kind of filling the role Defour might have been expected to do
but in certain areas he probably offers more.
As a result of his goal/performance many a Burnley fan feels
infinitely less worried than they were before and, at times during todays' game.
I thank him for that.

His style of play so reminds me of Glenn Little.

I always say Waddle but then both he and Little had the same awkward loping style that was equally devastating. However you look at it the lad is 19 and people are already talking about him which is very exciting.ClaretAL wrote:His style of play so reminds me of Glenn Little.

Not a chance we will keep him more than another year. First big offer and he will be gone (sadly)

I disagree. He's good - he's not that good. He's (a) signed a decent contract - (b) he's not reached his peak (c) I think we'll stay up (d) we can afford to reject any offer, even if we did go down.FCBurnley wrote:Not a chance we will keep him more than another year. If he continues in his current form, and improves his stamina, someone will come in for him. Maybe Wolves, Everton someone like that. Top six? Nah....

McNeil is quicker off the mark, smaller, more mobile, faster over distance. He’s just better than little. He’s effective at a higher level.

I'd go along with that. But let's not all rate and sell him before he's even grown into the player he can be. Let's get survival cemented and go from there.AlargeClaret wrote:We’ll get next season out of him and depending how good he is take it from there . Next season? No doubt. Beyond that who knows. Enjoy him while we can rather than worry about if he might go.
We have lost lots of players for huge money down the years. And no doubt he can already command big money. But one things clear. We have always been ok. (The player hasnt always mind...)

Think you need to read the Chairman's statement that accompanied yesterdays financial results
"we continued to invest in new playing talent whilst trading players where we felt that they might be at, or close to, the peak of their value."
and Dwight is some way away from that at the moment

Re: Can we keep hold of McNeil ?
Probably going to get shot down here, but I don’t see what all the fuss is about him, don’t get me wrong he’s clearly playing well, and is a good player but I can’t see any premier team being interested at the moment off a dozen appearances.
I suspect everyone likes him as he is the most creative attacking outfield player we have at the moment and comes up with an end product.
There’s a player in there for sure, but let’s not get too carried away, plus teams will start double marking him soon.

The thing that impresses me most about him is his football brain. His decision making of which pass to make or when to shoot just comes totally naturally to him. And best of all is he can back it up with that wand of a left foot.
He’s saved our season.

If he continues to progress, the decision will be his to make, not the club's.
The only debate will be the size of the fee.

I have been wondering recently why Dyche, who very rarely comments on individual performances, has made a point of bigging him up in recent interviews. Surely if you wanted to keep prying eyes away, if anything you’d be trying to play it down. It’s almost like he’s window-dressing him.

Say he equals that same form and ends next season with 9 goals and 9 assists; a 20 year old English midfielder with 3 years left on a contract.
That's got to be close to peak value, to us anyway.

Burnley boss Sean Dyche hails Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood

Sean Dyche has hailed “unsung heroes” Jack Cork and Ashley Westwood as key players in the Clarets’ revival.

BURNLEY boss Sean Dyche has praised Jeff Hendrick for his recent performances...

Seems he hails individual performances regularly, very rarely does he ever say much outright negative about the team because he knows confidence is a huge part of a team and players like ours.

Glen little was a master at putting the fullback in a spin or on their arse, O neil is getting there but not quite there yet, hope his flair isn’t coached out of him like you say, we’ve missed his threat on the wing for what seems like eons.bobinho wrote:To me, nowt like glen little. Re: Can we keep hold of McNeil ?
No we can't.
If he continues on his current trajectory, the envious eyes that are now ogling him will, as we all know if we're being honest, turn into serious bids from the United's and Chelsea's, or whoever, and he'll rightly (for his career)
be off. Its the way of the world.
But we should receive a colossal wedge for him.

How come Hudson-Odoi seems to be valued far higher yet he's played fewer matches than DM?
Re: Can we keep hold of McNeil ?
He lacks that electric pace, so will not attract the very best. My advice would be to stay where he can play. At 19, he has time on his side.
Anyway, he looks like Jimmy Adamson. He should stay for life.

Re: Can we keep hold of McNeil ?
I'm pretty sure he won't be going anywhere this summer if we stay up. Young talents rarely get picked up in January either when the market is inflated so realistically we've got him got next season if we can offer Premier League football.
Can we keep him longer? Not sure but perhaps there's no need to look much further ahead and just enjoy having him that long. He seems like a level headed kid who has already learnt the hard way the difficulties of trying to break through at one of the top clubs so I'd like to think we've a decent chance of keeping his head from being turned.
The big unknown in all this of course is relegation. If we go down this summer we might keep hold of him, but realistically if he keeps progressing he's going to be far too good for the Championship pretty soon so the task of keeping hold becomes much harder if we go down.
One thing we can offer him is the environment to develop to the height of his potential, which may well involve offering him the platform to take on a central role much earlier than he'd get that chance at a top club.

Whatever happens, we need at least a 20-25% sell-on if and when he does leave.
