There is a lot of dead wood

It will inevitably feel disrespectful, and that really isn't my intention, but in a week when we saw our wage bill is circa 80m, the following really need to be cut loose, where possible, to free up no small amount of money:

Hart
Ward
Walters
Wells

Also, as they don't appear to be getting much of a look in, if we can, it's time to go, for some sort of fee, for:

Brady
Vydra
Defour

Brady and Defour were never going to play a major role this season and that is why it was unbelievable that reinforcements weren't made in those areas. They were coming back from serious long term injuries and if they were fortunate to avoid niggles they wouldn't have been anywhere near their best till after Christmas anyway.

In the case of McNeil it has worked out because a new left sided player would almost certainly have meant he wouldn't have played.

Defour is a 20 game a season man when considered fully fit and we have no idea whatsoever if Brady will return to his form of early 2017-18, here's hoping he does.

Walters has just retired from football. It's not respectful in the same week he as retired to label him as deadwood. We should be reflecting on his entire career.

Walters had retired so that's one off the books. Crouch too hopefully. The rest of it is spot on, but I'd add Lennon and Lowton too. Cork to drop back to a squad player.

Let's hope this Rigg bloke was telling the truth the other day, and we are going to start bringing in some young players. More players in the mould of Taylor and McNeil please.

I’d prefer to reflect on what value the club got for the wage that we paid him

The squad needs a overhaul.

I would add Lennon to the released players and try and get our money back from Hendrink.

As said on other threads we haven't done very well with signing older players in the premier league.

We need younger players on an upward curve.

we need to get our average squad age down by at least 2 years (minimum).

Hart, Wells and Crouch need to go. Pope will be sold.
Ward, Bardsley, Defour, Vydra all need to be replaced
We could do with an upgrade on Barnes or Wood and Westwood or Cork.

Going to be a busy summer for Mr Rigg if we stay up.

No need to rid Hendrick--he can play 3 positions meaning that he's a great player to have in the squad.

With limited resources (comparatively) one always needs a couple of utility players that can fill in at multiple positions.

Replacing that amount of players isn't in Dyches ethos as a manager. We will release a couple but the majority of the squad will stick together. That's how we work as a unit, together. To move that much out of the squad in one swoop would destroy the teams mentality.

Twelve players out, how many do you expect in? Dyche has a level of loyalty that will see no more than three depart, may get one young player added to first team squad, therefore cannot see more than two or three additions in summer window.

Although not necessarily his fault probably the least value out of any player in the clubs history from a financial perspective.

Hart
Crouch
Vydra
Wells ( could be ok in Champ)
Lennon
Brady
Defour
Ward ( although been a v good player for us)

I would also be happy to see a replacement for Hendrick who I just dont rate at this level.

I though Hendrick signed a contract extension recently ? Agree that there won’t be wholesale changes as it is the group ethos that matters most to Mr Dyche.

No way will Hendrick go, one of our better players this season.
Some of our supporters must watch a different game to me or perhaps don’t go on games at all.

I can’t tell if that is sarcasm or not? I just don’t see what he brings to the team. He looks lost half the time.

I thought I’d check as I might be missing something, but no-

He made the least passes yesterday out of both teams.
Only the wolves keeper had less touches.
He had no shots
Only Barnes committed more fouls
No dribbles
No interceptions
Only Wood made less clearances
Fair play he was joint 4th in the tackles attempted department

But it’s being said he had a good game??? The mind boggles.

Players like Hendrick never receive the credit they deserve. Fans don't watch players without the ball taking space and position from the opponent is a vital role he does very well. He certainly wouldn't be on my ship out list.

I watched him all day yesterday and I’ll do the same on Saturday. He’s so low on confidence it’s unreal.

Quite good value I’d say...based on the fact that Ashley Barnes has made it clear just how much he’s learned from Walters whilst he’s been here! Barnes is a better player now than he was before Walters arrived.

Yes; the transfer didn’t work out on the pitch but there’s always more to things than we as fans see in the 90 minutes every Saturday!

Anyway; just my thoughts- I’m sure they’ll be shot down soon.

Just a different viewpoint to yours and provided some stats in what is a completely subjective opinion.

I think we need to be a tad more realistic as we rarely sign more than 3-4 players in a window so 6+ Is unlikely. We are not a million miles away but Ward and Bardsley can’t have too long left in them and we are crying out for a stronger (much physical) CM. That’s before we look to replace Vokes. Hopefully we have a few more Dwight MCNeils in the U23s!!

This thread might be meandering away from the OP's intent of identifying the "dead wood" into becoming a general "who would we ideally like to upgrade" wish list. Nothing wrong with that, of course.

However, since the Everton game - Burnley have accrued points at a rate which - extrapolated across a whole season - would see us in clear 7th place, several points above Wolves. This suggests to me that the Burnley team *is* Premier League quality, but the first half of the season showed that the backup squad simply isn't.

So - identifying the dead wood and replacing it with quality that can challenge the first team - rather than thinking of replacing first team players - would seem the prudent way to go.

We should probably offer him an extension then. He may have retired but image how good Barnes will be with a further 12 month of learning

Brady needs to go. Even when fit he's just not good enough so agree he's dead wood. His touch and distribution, which i thought were his strengths when were originally linked with him, have never materialised.
Defour needs to be offloaded. It's a shame but he's just not fit consistently enough and during his last run he was poor.
Hart should go too. Ridiculous signing.

Chased down a Wolves player in a piece of pressing that led to our second goal.

I wouldn’t mind some going:

Defour
Cork (fine for squad)
Bardsley (age)
One of the keepers (not Heaton for me)
Ward
Lennon (maybe)
McNeil ( )

That leaves us needing, a 1st team CM, and a young (preferably) rb and lb

The 11 that started on Saturday will stay, the only players to leave will be Hart and maybe Lowton, all we need is a central midfielder and back up for Bardsley

4 isn’t deadwood to me, just evolution. As far as the other 3 go we will always need players who don’t always play.

In terms of the names, Ward as a back up player isn’t a poor option. Brady, needs some game time but has the potential to change a game from the bench. Defour, maybe I’m clinging on but if fit again another great option.

All the others in agreement. Has Hart just got a 1 year deal? I understood city were paying some of his wages, it would worry me if we have to pick up the full tab from next season- could become our very own Jack Rodwell.
