Hybrid Cars
Anyone got any info on Hybrid cars.
Considering changing my car and I don't known anyone who as a Hybrid.
The two that I like the look of are both Toyota's, the Yaris Hybrid and the C-HR Hybrid.

Re: Hybrid Cars
I would say in future they will be great. But right now, personally wouldn't bother. More hassle than benefit. Plus its a bit crap not hearing an engine
Re: Hybrid Cars
I say go all in - that's what our next car will be

Hybrids and full electric cars.....
Re: Hybrid Cars
You have to way up the initial outlay for the car against the running cost/savings.

Re: Hybrid Cars
Are you confusing hybrid and electric? You need to plug electric in and finding a charging point could be a pain, but hybrid usually have a self charging battery which shares the energy need.cricketfieldclarets wrote:I would say in future they will be great. I’m currently considering the Lexus ES with BMW 5 series and Volvo S90, mainly due to cost. The Lexus is £150 per month cheaper on company car tax due to it being hybrid.

Re: Hybrid Cars
I recently purchased a Kia Niro hybrid (note they have a Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) and a fully electric model as well). It runs on a 1.6L petrol engine sharing the power with a battery. Bearing in mind it is an automatic, I get a very good 55+ MPG average, which should go higher as the temperatures increase (you use more battery power as you are not using the petrol engine for heating). I do have the top of the range 4 version with the 16" tyres as opposed to the standard 18" which gives it a better consumption. So I am getting the same, if not better mpg than my previous diesel, at lower fuel charges with the added benefit of an automatic (getting older !!). That suits me though, it's all down to personal preference. I like it.

Re: Hybrid Cars
I'm holding fire with my 75mpg diesel Honda Civic for a few more years - hopefully the Tesla Model 3 (or competitor equivalent - like Polestar from Volvo) will be at a more reasonable price point by then; and the range may be improved; and infrastructure improved; etc... I spoke to the Tesla sales chap in MK at the weekend and they now have multiple production Tesla's reaching over 1,000,000 miles without issue and only approx 15% battery degradation. I like the idea of a car that will go for "ever" with little service costs.

Re: Hybrid Cars
Wouldn't swap my Leaf for either, but if I was buying a non plug in hybrid, I would buy the CHR. It's a car I'd looked at previously because in certain colours, they're the car equivalent of a smart pair of trainers. I really like the design and they're one of the best looking hybrids currently on the market by a long way. Had they made a fully electric plug in version, it would have been 1st choice over a Leaf. As for the yaris, compared to the CHR, no competition imo.Better Call Saul wrote:Anyone got any info on Hybrid cars.

I want a hybrid or electric but the pace of improvement means I’m holding off through the next car but will get one after that.

No. I test drove the 530e.Claretforever wrote:Are you confusing hybrid and electric? You need to plug electric in and finding a charging point could be a pain, but hybrid usually have a self charging battery which shares the energy need.

Lovely car. Ridiculously comfy. But costs of fuel (well under 30mpg), hassle to charge, limited range, limited charging points and reduced bootspace meant that it wasn't worth it.
also while the BIK value is attractive, the list price of the car is far higher than the 520d.Which is effectively the same car.

Full electric from now on.

The Toyota CHR is one of the ugliest cars on the road at the moment imo.

Electric or Hybrid cars seem so very expensive still at the moment so I would wait if I was you until the prices come down.

Maybe cfc, but the difference in BIK means that the 530e is much cheaper as a company car.cricketfieldclarets wrote:No. I test drove the 530e.

As for the original question. It depends. As a privately owned car, they make little sense unless you get a plug in and can claim mileage from your company.
If it's a company car, then again, the phev makes huge sense (I'm currently saving over £200 a month by having a golf phev instead of an A4 diesel)
Avoid any car (phev / hybrid or traditional) with a cvt gearbox. They are really awful.
Re: Hybrid Cars
Get a dodgem.
Re: Hybrid Cars
Had a BMW 330e co. car for 12 months purely for the BIK as its roughly 50% less than a 320d or similar
Great car, comfy, well spec'd, quick but electric range is laughable, 11 miles at best on a cold morning, petrol only reasonable mpg at about 44-48

Only to a certain extent. Because the list price is far higher. So it balances out.1fatclaret wrote:Maybe cfc, but the difference in BIK means that the 530e is much cheaper as a company car.

Any eye-opener!

And let's not kill off the diesel engine just yet!
This is the real way forward.

Re: Hybrid Cars
Hybrids are just normal cars with a bit of electric, to add novelty.

You might want to check again on this.cricketfieldclarets wrote:Only to a certain extent. Because the list price is far higher. So it balances out.
520d SE auto will cost £4700 as a higher rate tax payer
530e M sport phev will be just over £3000 and is a much better spec. It also goes down by £400 next year while the diesel goes up.
The company saves on NI contributions too.
PHEV's make great sense as company cars, which is why there's a lack of them around to buy. Manufacturers can't keep up. Battery shortages everywhere.

I believe Audi are releasing some interesting models next year.

Re: Hybrid Cars
Yes. BUT. The tax saving isn't that much. £1,700 for sake of the hassle of charging, the increased petrol costs, the smaller boot, the real cost of charging (at home) the ballache to charge (I tried once at Trafford Centre and because I wasn't registered I couldn't do it - meanwhile guy next to me parked in the bay and wasn't charging either. Was just pretending to to get the parking space!!!)1fatclaret wrote:You might want to check again on this.

Fuel - 520d is incredibly economical. At least twice as much as the 27mpg I got when testing the 530e. So doing a lot of (personal miles) straight away adds up.
The list price of the 530e is much higher than the list price of the 520d - way more than the £1,700 saving even over 5 years! So you will be paying more for the car (assuming you don't have an unlimited budget - if you do fair enough, of course it doesn't matter. But assuming if saving on tax matters, saving on the price of the car also matters). You can get the same spec car for roughly the same price just with a more economical engine. (Granted it isn't quite as quick off the mark).
Charging and refuelling - you will spend way more time (not to mention money) charging and refuelling
Charging costs - electric isn't free. And if you charge at home this all adds up. And you only get an absolute max 30 miles anyway. Far more hassle than its worth, especially if you do more than short journeys. if you only do 20 mile journeys a day it might be worth it. But then why would you want a brilliant, comfy, good looking car to do 20 miles a day?
I loved the 530. And was tempted. But way too many downsides for me. Accept it MIGHT just be worth it for some people.

On north west tonight a guy was selling the electric car concept and how once you joined some scheme or other for a one off £20... you could charge your car any where there was a charging station apparently there's two in Pendle three in Burnley and none In Barrow... It Appears he was being a little economical with the truth.red faces all round at the end of the news and the shuffling of feet.cricketfieldclarets wrote:45 minutes to charge the Jaguar I Pace. Re: Hybrid Cars
There seem to be a lot of Tesla chargers at fuel stations that are not working and have had covers on for the last couple of years.
