Goal difference

Post by clitheroeclaret2 » Tue Apr 02, 2019 8:33 pm

Big game tonight, City v Cardiff.
Notice city already have a few goals lead over liverpool, hopefully can make it a few more thereby increasing our goal lead over cardiff!
Could be worth an extra point to both us and city at end of season :)

I hate to curse it. But I can see city winning 6-0. Can see them going out and just proving a point to Liverpool that they will just destroy anyone on their path.

City have the tougher of the two run ins, so will look to send a real message out.

Why, oh why, would you post that! You’re asking for it! I’ll take a 1-0 City win right now thank you very much.

I think City might find it a tad more difficult
against Cardiff than many believe it will be.

Cardiff have absolutely nothing to lose, will be fired up after losing against Chelsea
and know that goal difference isn't an issue. It's not as if they're likely to score 5 or 6.

They may defend for their lives or as best they can knowing that the important games for them are against us,
Brighton and Fulham away and Palace at home.
They'll probably need to win at least two, probably three of those to give themselves a chance
of staying up and also rely on us, Brighton and Southampton not picking up more than a couple of points
in our/their remaining fixtures.

Still expect City to win but maybe not by as many as hoped for.
Even if it's only by 2 goals the goal difference between us and them will be 11.

That's got to be worth one point.

it's one hell of a tall order but then they have won 3 of their last 7 games and were
unlucky not to get anything from the Chelsea game so they're clearly still up for it.

They'll know that if they beat us at the Turf then they're still in with a decent chance.

Lose and they're more than likely down.
More importantly if we beat then they'll need a miracle and/or a total collapse from us
and possibly Brighton.

Assuming City win tomorrow & we beat Cardiff, Cardiff will need a minimum of 8 points from their last 5 games to potentially top us, and that's assuming they turn around their inferior goal difference, and we lose our other five games ...

Tbf that applies to every team outside of the top six and even most in it. We tried to defend, but City only need half a chance to score. I think Bournemouth had the right idea. Once you concede just try not to concede anymore.

However if City were to lose or even draw imagine the pressure Guardiola would be under for our game.

Apparently you can get 80/1 on a Cardiff win!

Udders gone, Fulham gone if city can give them a bit of a thumping (and surely they have to go for goals at this late stage of season) that could further demoralise them after the Chelsea game

Our goal difference is much superior to Cardiff’s but we slipped up badly when we failed to get even one point v Leicester because that means that if Cardiff turn us over they just need one more win than us to overtake us by a point...It would be massive for us if we can get something at Bournemouth on Saturday!

Not convinced re our goal difference.

If we ship 2 against arsenal, Chelsea and Everton and another 5 against city. That wipes out all of that buffer we have.
3 pt against Bournemouth and 3 pt against Cardiff. Rest wont matter

So Cardiff won't ship loads against Man City & Liverpool?

For tonight's game

⚽️ 0 Goals - 33/1
⚽️ 1 Goal - 11/1
⚽️ 2 Goals - 11/2
⚽️ 3 Goals - 15/4
⚽️ 4 Goals - 7/2
⚽️ 5 Goals - 9/2
⚽️ 6 Goals - 13/2
⚽️ 7+ Goals - 5/1

Chance to make money at 11/1 if you really think City will be kept down to one goal.

I was doing one of these 'predict the result' things to see where we might finish in the table - Even if Cardiff lose tonight, our games against them and Bournemouth are MUST win. We are still in the relegation mix for sure.

Is that the odds for the total number of goals or just Citys goals? If it's just Citys then I think 5/1 for them to score 7 (seven) is really sh!te. Seven away from home, even for City at Cardiff, should be more like 50/1. No wonder bookies make money. :o

If we beat Cardiff and assuming they lose tonight we'd be eight points in front of them and they would have five games left.

Even if we lost every other game making up 8-9 points in five matches is an almost impossible task at this stage of the season.

I can't remember what I predicted exactly, but I placed Cardiff to either beat us or draw and then us to lose against Bournemouth. Then after that, I was realistic in the outcome of all the remaining fixtures - and we finished in the bottom three.

(Going off my Super6 record though- I'll be way off)

...even a draw against Cardiff (assuming they lose tonight) would mean they have 5 games to catch up 5 points. Considering they aren't even averaging a point per game, it's not certain they'd get a bare 5 points just to get anywhere near us. I accept they have games against Brighton (A), Palace (H) and Fulham (A) so might have opportunities to get those points. Brighton, though, will need points for safety - so that won't be easy. Palace, as Man city and ourselves might testify, can be very effective away from home and Fulham have no pressure so can just 'play' (as we did a few seasons back when we took a very good Spurs team apart, having already been relegated).

My point is, as long as we don't lose to Cardiff I'd be extremely disappointed if we didn't stay up (even if it is on goal difference......so, in that regard, come on City (Manchester, that is)!!!!)

We have City, Everton and Arsenal, I can't see us getting many points in those matches - that's why Cardiff and Bournemouth are huge games. Bizarrely, its only until today really were I've realised that we are actually in a relegation battle.

They don't think Cardiff are going to get any further points ...
They have us finishing on 37 and Cardiff on 28 :D

We have to beat Cardiff (or if we beat Bournemouth, not lose to them) really

Spijed - can you produce similar table for Cardiff? I have a feeling their away record is appalling and 5 of their remaining 7 games are away from home. (Their other home game apart from Palace which I mentioned above, happens to be against Liverpool!!!)

I have a feeling that unless they suddenly dramatically change their away form/record (possible, I appreciate) Cardiff will have a big job to get any more than (at best) six points between now and the end of the season. (Maybe they might get a win against Palace and perhaps 3 away draws?)

Thanks Spijed (for the table and the website).

As expected Cardiff have had a couple of wins away (both of which were a bit lucky, from memory) and then away draws at Hudds and Palace, away from home.

To expect Cardiff to go on a winning spree away from home seems unrealistic (although, as I keep saying, it's still possible).

I do expect us to draw, if not beat, Cardiff at home. Assuming that happens I still think it'll be a good effort from them to get another 6 points to get past us even if we then lose every other game.

Jeez - hope I'm not tempting fate..............:(

.
But that's absolutely true.
The fact is that you wouldn't expect a struggling team to have picked up many points in the away fixtures they've played so far. It's just the way the fixtures have fallen. We have some tough fixtures, whereas they still have 4 of the bottom 8 to play.
If we don't beat them, I think we're in big trouble. They could easily end up on 37 / 38 points

I reckon Brighton will beat Cardiff, Bournemouth & Newcastle whist Cardiff will beat us, Fulham & Brighton giving them both 9 more points. That means we need to find 4 more points at least so assuming we beat Cardiff we need to get a point elsewhere with Bournemouth being the best chance this weekend

How can you assume we'll beat Cardiff when you've already said that they'll get 9 points (inc. 3 against us).
Is this what is mean't by a 6 pointer? :)

[quote="Tall Paul"]So they're unbeaten against the bottom six away from home ;)

Not to get all nit-picky on you, Tall Paul, but they can't play themsleves (so only five other teams in the 'bottom 6) and of those 5 teams, they've still to play 3 of them. I agree they have an outside chance to escape relegation but don't you think the likes of us/Brighton will be looking at the Cardiff game as our most likley 3 points and our way out of trouble?

As I said earlier on in the thread (I think), Cardiff's game against Fulham, on paper, looks easy but teams with nothing to play for and with no pressure, suddenly remember how to play. I think Fulham will get a draw if not win that game.
