Never has the ‘one game at a time’ mantra read more true...

Post by jdrobbo » Wed Apr 03, 2019 9:54 pm

Perfect set of results for Burnley tonight, with Brighton and Cardiff both losing. Our margin remains five points, yet we find ourselves talking about THAT game against Cardiff on 13th April.

Hang on...everything now MUST be directed towards Bournemouth. We’re perfectly capable of going down to the south coast and bruising the Cherries. It’s a huge opportunity for a points return of some sort and we need to try and seize the opportunity and in doing so, make the gap between us and Cardiff even greater.

For the next few days, let’s be thinking Bournemouth and nowt else!!

Carpé Diem!

If we play like we did last season down there, we could well win. That game was peak Brady, he scored one & made one for Wood as I recall & we went 6th in the league. Hopefully McNeil can do what Brady did last time round, fingers crossed.
Southampton losing to Liverpool just along that coast on Friday night would also be very welcome news.

I’ve always found supporters talking/not talking about a game doesn’t really affect the result.

The Cherries have one win in eight (against Huddersfield) and no home wins since January.

They are as good as safe so this is definitely a game we can, probably should, get something from.

Yes I also think the game at Bournemouth is as important as the one
against Cardiff as if we manage to get a win on Saturday then we'd be 8 points
ahead of Cardiff and virtually safe. even a point would be perceived as more than
beneficial and put us 6 ahead with a much better goal difference.

So if the worst came to the worst and we lost to Cardiff we'd still be 3 points ahead
with a much better goal difference.
A draw would obviously keep us at least 5 points ahead, maybe more if we get something from the
Bournemouth game.

So the game on Saturday is clearly very significant.
Win it and we're safe, me thinks.
Draw it and we're probably safe.
Lose it and we can't afford to lose against Cardiff.

Last night was a good night for us and, as they say (whoever 'they' are) it is very defintely all in our hands now, it doesn't matter what anyone else does. If it wasn't for those last 4 games (somebody at the PL definitely doesn't want us there) I'd be totally at ease now but unfortunately I think we need 4 points from the next two games to be pretty sure. Assuming (hopefully wrongly) that we are not going to get points from those last 4 (but who knows) we have to maximise efforts to get what we need from the next two. Beating Cardiff I think is essential as an 8 point cushion (depending on this weekend of course) would be excellent.

As far as the OP title goes I don't get this 'one game at a time' mantra of Seans. He says it but obviously doesn't mean it or he wouldn't throw cup games (and European) for the 'game after next'. His actions do not back up his words. If you really believe something you back it up with the right action, unfortunately he doesn't. I just wish he would actually come out and say 'we are not interested in any cups' and have done with it, at least the hypocrisy would disappear.

What I meant, and what I stand by, is that the Bournemouth game, at this moment in time, is THE biggest and most important game of the season. It’s an opportunity to create a very big gap between Cardiff.

Absolutely our biggest game of the season.

There is the possibility we could clime about a team or two putting them under greater pressure .

We would have sunnier climes metaphorically or even meteorologically if we were able to climb the league.

What a superb win. I watched an NBC stream, and their prediction before the game was a solid Bournemouth victory - and to be fair I'm sure the bookmakers all thought the same - but we looked (and sounded like) the home team all the way through. I know it's still not over, and we finish with some especially difficult games, but now with Newcastle also below us things look a lot rosier than they did before the Wolves game.

Now thinks jdrobbo is Sean Dyche. (On the off chance that you are, please will you leave a player up on halfway when we’re defending corners? Ta very much.)

Ps Sean Dyche was asked this question at a fans event...he said that by having all players back at a corner hugely increases your statistical probability of not conceding; far more so than having ten in the box.

It also significantly decreases your chance of counter attacking and scoring.

You might not concede directly from the corner but presumably you can’t measure the fact that when we do clear it, it’s only partially clear and the opposition can keep the pressure on by recycling the loose ball.
