Lake Como recommendations

Post by cricketfieldclarets » Mon Apr 08, 2019 10:26 pm

As thread title. Think a few on here have been recently.

Staying on East coast of the lake (Dervio). Weather going to be hit and miss but that aside open to any recommendations. Got a bit of an itinerary and have plenty of time. Will be 4 adults and 3 kids if that affects any of the recommendations.

Belaggio probably the obvious one?

Thanks

Hi CC,

this is one of the main sites where you can find most things. You can change the language to English; check out the experiences section, loads of options for you to consider esp. having little ones.

https://www.lakecomo.is/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If you have the money, I'd go for helicopter ride for an hour or so; Como is stunning from above. If not, then there are boat tours that will take you all around the lake, make sure the weather is nice though.

When are you going to be there?

I've only been to Como city, which is OK. Alessandro Volta, the inventor of the Volt was from Como and there is a decent museum if you're into that sort of thing. It is near the stadium as well. Como have 2 home games remaining, this coming weekend and one after Easter.
There is also a furnicular in the town that takes you up to a place called Brunate, from there, there is a little walk upto a lighthouse that has stunning views from the hillside over the lake.
The cathedral and Villa Olmo are also good eye candy. (as well as the lasses!!)

We stayed in Varenna, just south of Dervio. It turned out to be a great base for the little passenger ferries that criss cross the lake. Belaggio ok for a one off but stupidly overpriced. We did spend a lot of time though in Menaggio on the West bank (via ferry). Thr scenery is spectacular, and some great walks if you're adventurous.
The train to Milano Centrale is about an hour and passes through Monza.
We had a hire car and drove up the east bank (through Dervio) to the mountain pass and up to St Moritz, which is pretty quiet in summer but again, spectacular.
I particularly liked eating the freshwater 'Pesce del Lago' in the local restaurants.
Oh and some unbelievable thunderstorms!

There’s a nice walk from the top of the funicular about 5 miles through the woods down to a beautiful village called Torno where you can grab a drink by the harbour and then catch the ferry.

Take some good boots if you're going walking. Encountered a huge snake on a farm track> Doubt whether it was poisonous but I wasn't hanging around to ask it ;)

Like you say, Bellagio is a must. Take your camera :)

Depends on many things, how long will you be there? What are your interests? Will you have a car/minibus? Are you a millionaire ( don't know what it is but Como always makes me feel that I should be)? What the weather is like (always been good when I have been there). Lots of Villas/gardens to visit, I have only done one though (Villa Carlotta). The Funicula is on my list for next time, I believe it is spectacular. As said the trip to St Moritz is superb, I drove it but they say it's better to go to Tirano and then catch the train. Stelvio pass while you are up that way is spectacular, Umbrail pass into Switzerland concetrates the mind rather more. Lake Maggiore and it's Islands are worth a visit, if rather touristy, Lago Di Orta is quiter and also has an Island.

Great tips. Didnt think about Como fc. As usually go to inter and will be doing this time. However will be there this weekend so may take that in.

Boat trips will be a must no doubt. Helicopter - no, nay, never!

Going tomorrow.

Weather looks hit and miss at the minute. We have 8 days in como. 4 in milan. So hoping for some nice wetaher but may get a good mix in 8 days to see different sides to it. Assume its stunning in all weather. But love a big storm!!!

FYI, the Como game is on Sunday at 1500. They are top of the league by 2 points with 4 games to go. Level is 4th tier but Como are a big club at that level and still get decent support so should have some atmosphere, it is a big game; doubt they'll be any away fans though coming from Sondrio, small town, small club.
The ground is about 10 mins walk from the centre, there is the Curva (uncovered) and a side stand (covered) so if it is raining......
I know all this as I was there in Feb.

Fantastic thanks.

San Siro is always the icing on the cake of course.

But how can you tire of that view? Woke up to that every morning. (Resolutions crap as had to scale down to attach to this post)

Went to Dervio, Colico, Lecco, Belaggio, Menaggio, Varenna and Ponte Nel Cielo. Along with Milan.

Very impressed with how easy it is to travel up and down and around the lake.

Will be sure to return!
