Up Pompeii!

Postby IanMcL » Mon Apr 08, 2019 10:39 pm

Some people have the brain power of a gnat!

Italian police have detained a British woman suspected of removing some small Roman tiles from a mosaic at Pompeii.

Italian media say she was spotted cutting tiles - called tesserae - from a floor mosaic in the world-famous site's House of the Anchor . She was with her father and sister at the time.

The damage was estimated at €3,000 (£2,600) by the site's manager.

Nearby Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, killing many Pompeii residents and entombing a thriving city.

The 20-year-old woman had crossed a guard rail around the mosaic, police said.

Last year police arrested two French tourists found stealing pieces of marble and earthenware at Pompeii, Italy's Il Giornale daily reports.

Assuming the facts are as in the OP I hope she gets all that she deserves, but no doubt anytime soon she'll be in the papers claiming the British Embassy have abandoned her and aren't doing enough to help her and to secure her release!!
PS. How funny was Frankie Howard in that!??

Lurcio. One of the funniest characters ever on TV.

'I'm just off down to Marcus Spencius for some bread'.

'How DOES he do that?'

Sadly with it's innuendo it wouldn't see the light of day now.

As mentioned it would probably never make it to screen now, but it was very clever and very funny at the time. (Probably still is actually!) I didn't even know Frankie Howard was gay until after he'd died!!

It was loosely based on "a funny thing happened on the way to the forum"

I have a piece of broken Roman pottery and a small 4" block of white marble which I found on the seabed in Cyprus.

As for Frankie Howard, he was hilarious but it was also revealed after his death he was a sexual predator and tried it on with young aspiring actors and wasn't subtle.

I can’t remember who else was on the show. But the warm up man was Tom O’Connor.

I was a student studying film & tv so spent a week at BBC Studios. I was asked to sit next to Frankie while pre-show test camera shots were made.
