Hasn't McNeil got the most assists and goals for a teenager in the Prem this season?Rileybobs wrote:Maybe he is just better.

"Assists" is a very dubious statistic anyway. The BBC report says he got one assist today; presumably the second goal doesn't count as an "assist" because it deflected off a defender before Wood headed it in.Spijed wrote:Hasn't McNeil got the most assists and goals for a teenager in the Prem this season?

Perhaps, but that doesn’t necessarily make him a better player than someone who hasn’t had the required game time to amass those numbers.Spijed wrote:Hasn't McNeil got the most assists and goals for a teenager in the Prem this season?

To the tune of She’s Electric.
He’s the reason
We’ve stayed up this season.
But don’t forget Tom Heaton
He’s Dwight McNeil

Re: What I Really Liked About Dwight Today...
This lad has dragged us out of trouble since that Huddersfield game. He’s a joy to watch and his stats are 17 games, 3 goals and 5 direct assists. The amount of goals he has assisted in indirectly is unknown but I’d assume it’s rather hefty.
For me I hope that Southgate had a word in his ear when he trained with England, urging him to stay with us and get valuable game time and experience as he will be a shoe in for Burnley , we simply can’t dream of not playing this lad.
My sons new favourite player and will eventually leave us for a huge figure. What a player!

Raheem Sterling still qualifies for that and is the favoritetiger76 wrote: IDK if the PL has a young player of the year award, but if they do he must be a prime candidate to scoop such an accolade.

He's 24 though. That's not young in terms of Pro football. Young is 21 or under, surely.Chester Perry wrote:Raheem Sterling still qualifies for that and is the favorite

I hope we don't put too much pressure on him. When I say "we" I mean the press. The Press are going to be all over him if he carries on and will be put in the national papers of how he should be in the England side. Something I think should wait 18-24 months.Chester Perry wrote:I agree - think it is fr players who are 23 and under on a given date
How many careers have the press ruined? A lot! They ruin careers all the time.

on the money there Frank - he is definitely getting noticed though - the streams I watch usually NBC they constantly talk him up as our star player and the most productive young player in the leagueFactualFrank wrote:I hope we don't put too much pressure on him. Hopefully he gets a good grounding in the U21's before being considered for a full England debut.FactualFrank wrote:I hope we don't put too much pressure on him. When I say "we" I mean the press. The two massive pluses about this season have been the development of Taylor and the unexpected emergence of McNeil. Without either and especially McNeil we'd have probably been absolutely fu***d!

he is not that hairy or as perceptibly fast - Dwight seems to glide past players with the ball glued to his feetWalton wrote:He reminds me a lot of Ryan Giggs

I think Dwight is the reincarnation of Glen Little.
Same gangly lolloping style, looks knackered after 10 minutes, wonderful feet, great whipped balls in and a genuine goal threat.
Super Dwight.

McNeill reminds me of Tony Adams. Similar kind of player.

Not knocking McNeill who is a truely incredible prospect but he has been fortunate to have had Taylor behind him. Taylor has coped manfully with the lesser cover in front of him. This has allowed McNeill a far freer role. If Taylor wasn't so solid, McNeill would be sitting deeper and not in a position to do what he does.

Re: What I Really Liked About Dwight Today...
I think for the most part McNeil has been excellent defensively, he was outstanding particularly against Wolves where on a couple of occasions he intercepted crosses towards the back post. Whilst his development is a credit to him and our coaches I don't think anyone could have foreseen just how good he has been.

Probably winning the Golden Ball for the best player in the Under 17 World Cup. Stuff like that.Spijed wrote:Apart from playing the odd game for Man City and being hyped up, what exactly makes Phil Foden any better?
This thread is hilarious. Loads of people saying the media shouldn’t put too much pressure on him and ruin him, whilst at the same time comparing him to Ryan Giggs and saying he is better than Foden.

12pts from the 1st 18 games we certainly needed something different. Dwight and Charlie playing down the left have dragged us screaming and kicking up the table with some excellent performances. Dwight McNeil is going to play at the very highest level in club football and International football

To be honest McNeil didn’t have to get world class players out of the way to get a game like Foden does.
McNeil has been a breath of fresh air this season. Let’s hope we can keep hold of him and see more of it next season.

To create chances sometimes you have to loosen the shackles a tad, you could also say that the extra defensive responsibilities laid on Taylor have actually made him a better player aswell.Wirvine wrote:Not knocking McNeill who is a truely incredible prospect but he has been fortunate to have had Taylor behind him. Our left side looks pretty decent now going forward we just need someone capable of something decent on the right now

Bigger difference between knowing something about football and being a claret and blue tinted glasses wearing Burnley fan.
Re: What I Really Liked About Dwight Today...
Another thing I noticed today watching the goals back.
Last home game McNeil got into a similar position as for the 2nd goal in front of the Cricket Field Stand and fizzed one at head height across Chris Wood who didn’t react in time. Wood went at him verbally and pointed to his feet, indicating that’s where he wanted the ball.
Yesterday, similar position, McNeil definitely looks up and this time drills it low. He’s listening and he’s learning.
That’s a great sign.
