Goalscorers

Post by Tricky Trevor » Sat Apr 13, 2019 8:00 pm

Or lack of them appears to be the definer at the bottom of the table.
Huddersfield and Cardiff are well short, Fulham and BHA have scored 32 apiece but concede too many.
For all we(I) say that we need an upgrade on Wood/Barnes we have 42, with only Bournemouth in the bottom half having more, and Wolves have less in the top half.
As it appears Vydra is never going to fit it’s serious competition, if not a starter, to challenge the mainmen we need

I think Vydra isn't starting because SD doesn't have enough confidence in us to pass our way forward, and therefore direct play to Barnes/Wood is percentage play. And I can see where he's coming from.

However, that comes with a problem because he's not playing. Leeds almost signed him before he decided to sign for us and he'll want out this summer and sign for them. If that happens (which I think it will), he'll show you how good a player he is.

It's midfield we need to first worry about, because until we can pass our way through the pitch, players like Vydra won't get a look in.

Defour with Vydra in pre-season, may make a change.

They say that the number of goals a team scores generally very closely resembles the number of points they gain. These two strikers go a long way to us making the magic 40 point mark. They would walk into most sides in the bottom half.

Barnes & Wood have been terrific for us in the second half of the season. Since Boxing Day they've scored 16 league goals between them.

We are never going to have the top Premier League strikers at our club, but the return we get from these two is outstanding.

Question is though, why did it take Sean so long to put the two together again when they were such an effective pairing last season?

Probably due to the improved service supplied by Dwight McNeil?

We need to sign a striker to challenge and cover for injuries. Barnes and Wood are a good pairing now and have developed an understanding. Midfield is where we need to strengthen and possibly wide to upgrade on Brady and Lennon.

It would have been even longer had it been left to fans who spent most of the first half of the season targeting Woods who preferred Vokes.

It’s always going to be easier to score goals in a team playing well but their total is phenomenal.

As I posted above, I think central midfield is the primary area we need to target. If we only signed 1 player in the summer, for me, it would be a ball playing central midfielder. Someone who can pick a pass - and keep hold of Vydra. We then don't have to always play it long to Wood/Barnes.

The fact that the defence has tightened up has helped considerably. They've played with far more freedom since Xmas. McNeil a massive part of that going forward but they've all started working as hard as they did last season, not something we could say before the turnaround.

Raheem Sterling 16 goals, Wood 10 goals

Look at the respective teams they play in - I would say our lads are seriously over achieving given the amount of chances created for them

Also the way some of the negative nellies on here, who throughout the season have been wetting themselves at the way Wolves play, you wouldn't think that they've scored less goals than us in the league.
