" Cann flagged but at no point whatsoever did he place his flag across his chest to signal a penalty;"
That will be because that is not the signal for a penalty

If you check the laws of the game you will see a penalty is shown in the same way as an ordinary free kick. The AR then moves down to the corner flag.ClaretTony wrote:Always has been and it’s been used this season

Lazy journalism.
Don’t recall any rants when they may have been justified.

Re: REPORT: Warnock rants as Clarets take the points
In all honesty, Darren Cann did flag and then move towards the corner flag, as is the instruction when awarding a penalty, however, there was a slight delay before he moved which, I presume, was because he was talking to Mike Dean through the comms system to say what he thought.
The final outcome, however it was achieved, was correct and has been backed up in quite a number of referees' forums which I have read.
Any AR who gives the signal as it used to be needs to give himself a good talking to because he is wrong.
Contrary to one post above, I have never seen the old signal used by any AR this season and I hae not missed a match, mind you, we don't see many penalties at the Turf anyway.

Great report Tony.......
The flag across the chest is old hat in the modern age. In lower levels of football where they are not miked up, it is I'm sure still commonplace.
DP in Sussex can possibly confirm this.
There was no doubt from my view that the AR was convinced he saw the handball....Dean in my opinion didn't agree with him.I'm sure he'd have been pretty "miffed" at his interference and had big balls in over ruling him. In going over there (to the AR) he was telling everyone that he wan't in agreement.
For me that was the best refereeing I've seen in years (but I would say that wouldn't I?)

Re: REPORT: Warnock rants as Clarets take the points
Cheers Tony...........I would like to add Phil Bardsley's sheer determination and attitude to the changes post-Christmas that have made such a difference.
We can relax and " enjoy " the last games now, and I too would "love it " if we could beat Arsenal.
On to next season.
Up the Clarets.........

I dont know Turfy. I don't referee that low down the pyramid any more
However when my daughter did her course only a matter of months ago they were taught the correct way and non of this across the chest rubbish.
If a premier league AR put his flag across his chest he would be absolutely slaughtered by the assessor.
Would also reckon that Dean gave his AR an absolute rollicking for coming across with a decision that was more credible for the referee to give.
I know from experience and being on the end of a few this season.

Yes he did. Then Dean went across and stood where the lino had been standing. Then the line moved back to Dean and they conversed. Then no pen.ClaretTony wrote:When did that change? He never moved though.
Re: REPORT: Warnock rants as Clarets take the points
The linesman signalled handball with his left hand after attracting Dean's attention with the flag in his right hand. And it was definitely the second "handball" he was flagging for, because he only flagged after the second one. I sit in the Bob Lord directly opposite where the linesman was, and with Mee having his back to him but his right arm slightly out, and IMO the linesman saw the cross come in and hit Mee's arm (which if that had been all, would have been a penalty) but didn't see it hit Mee's face first.

Nice report Tony you do a fantastic job and to be frank wouldn't like to be in your shoes as every mistake gets pulled and scrutinised.
The effort and time you put in is furnominal and i for one like your takes on all matters Claret.
Some things that get pulled are trivial and sanctimonious and it makes you feel a bit miffed at times keep up the good work chap its excellent for us exiles even though i so this one in the flesh.

Re: REPORT: Warnock rants as Clarets take the points
"What an incredible turn round it’s been since Christmas. We can all point to the emergence of McNeil and the return of Heaton, but it’s not just that. Our two strikers have scored a phenomenal 16 goals between them in those 15 league games, Westwood has played his best football since joining us and Taylor has been a revelation. It’s all been about the team. There have been some terrific performances and, even in those recent defeats, there hasn’t been too much to complain about. "
