Dyche as Shankly, Clough, Fergie, Taylor -discuss
I reckon he's more of a Shankley than a Clough. Fergie was lucky. Taylor was a turnip.

How was Fergie lucky?
Maybe initially, when their fans wanted rid, but Mark Robins scored an important goal, if memory serves, but after that? Lucky? Really?

Lucky definitely. That goal at Oxford ? saved him from the sack. No doubt. In that sense he was extremely lucky.

Also I was tempted to include Paisley in that mini list but I can't see anything in Dyche that reminds me of old Bob

It was at Nottm Forest. He’d already won trophies with Aberdeen, including the ECWC, to get the ManU gig. Top man.kindonesque wrote:Lucky definitely. That goal at Oxford ? saved him from the sack. No doubt. In that sense he was extremely lucky.

Trevor you forgot to mention that he was the last manager to win the Scottish Championship apart from the Old Firm.Tricky Trevor wrote:It was at Nottm Forest. He’d already won trophies with Aberdeen, including the ECWC, to get the ManU gig. Top man.

I think Dyche is unique. He has a style all of his own, a little hint of Cloughie, which is understandable.
I doubt any of those greats could have performed the miracles that Sean has at Turf Moor. They all had a very good style of playing, but SD doesn't have a style, just a belief that no matter what your shortcomings you can set up to affect the game. In the process we have become a very tidy team that, with a couple of additions, could well be best of the rest next season.

Re: Dyche as Shankly, Clough, Fergie, Taylor -discuss
I would say 'not yet'. Those guys all won major trophies and, as good as Dyche has been with Burnley, we will not know how good he is compared to the 'greats' unless and until he gets with a club with the means to actually win something. I'm not being critical of the club here, just realistic. Dyche needs, if he is to become truly great, to find a club with the financial wherewithal to back him in a way Burnley really can't. Whether, with his reputation with regard to his style, he ever gets that chance is another matter.
We are in a strange position here in that no-one wants to hold anyone back from greatness but in an odd way we don't want Dyche to achieve that because we don't want him to leave but unless there is a massive change in the way football is heading he isn't going to achieve it here unless we do a Leicester, and the way the top 6 are spending money now I don't think that will happen again because they seem to be ring-fencing themselves to make sure it doesn't happen again - look at the stupid gap between 6th and 7th now.

Good post house. Dyche is unique. I remember when Jimmy Adamson (Adamson's Academy; Team of the Seventies and all that stuff) was in charge and he was being tipped for the England job. We didn't want to lose him but it looked nailed on that we would. It all went south though. It would be nice to see if Dyche stayed a few more years to see if he could land a pot (League Cup or FA Cup)

Re: Dyche as Shankly, Clough, Fergie, Taylor -discuss
Without going over old ground, Sean Dyche is in a bit of a conundrum. The owners and supporters of the " Big Six " would probably not countenance his appointment at their club, because of his perceived style. You could probably say the same for Everton and West Ham.
The world has changed from the heyday of Clough, Shankly, Stein etc, with the money that the big clubs can attract through TV, Sponsorship, and overseas earnings. In this Global age, an Ipswich, Aston Villa, Forest or Derby are hardly likely to win the EPL, never mind the Champions League, with Leicester being the rare exception that proves the rule.
At the vast majority of other EPL Clubs, and for that matter, the so-called " Sleeping Giants " in the Championship ( Leeds, Derby, Villa etc ), he would not get the breadth of control that he enjoys at Burnley, which would be difficult after what he's experienced here. His tenure at Burnley is probably the most secure of the 92 League Managers currently employed, and his time with us has seen him extremely well remunerated, with various bonus's for promotions and retaining our EPL status.
Should he feel he needs a new challenge, Europe may be his best opportunity ....

Fergie was lucky.
Unbelievable statement. Genuinely incredulous at that.
The most successful manager ever in English football .... a record unlikely to ever be surpassed?
Nah mate. Lucky.

You do know he’d beaten Real Madrid in a European final with Aberdeen before this apparently lucky moment?kindonesque wrote:Lucky definitely. That goal at Oxford ? saved him from the sack. No doubt. In that sense he was extremely lucky.
