RIP the 96
Does anyone recall being in the Leppings Lane End for our FA Cup semi v Newcastle. I was a 19-year-old and it was the worst crown crush I ever experienced. That was 1973.

Semi was 1974, I was in Leppings Lane end, it was bad then 15 years before the disaster but policing was probably a bit better.

I was just going to say, I thought it was 1974. I was in the Lepping End as well and couldn't move or even move my arms for the whole match. I was actually stood next to a copper and I remember him saying, halfway through the second half " this is ridiculous, I hope nothing serious happens, coz I can't move".
Re: 30 years - RIP
I was there too and it really was ridiculous, like you say Vino you just could not move.

Re: 30 years - RIP
I was there that day in 1974, one of my first away days following the Clarets as a 14 year old school kid. The day started with trouble on the train with some of our own so called supporters being escorted off by British transport police at Wakefield for demanding money with menacies. The crush behind that Leppings Lane End was truly horrific, struggling to breathe i honestly thought my time was up. Fortunately i managed to escape to one of the outer pens - but this was only a prelude to the accident waiting to happen some 15 years later. SuperMac got 2 goals and Peter Noble hit the bar for us in a game we should have won.To cap it all the bus escorting us back to the Railway station got bricked by the Geordies to round off a day of frightening experiences.

I was in that end as well. the main thing that caused the deaths was they made things worse by putting pens in there as well. In 1974 when there was a surge it pushed fans sideways That took the strain when they scoredVino blanco wrote:I was just going to say, I thought it was 1974. Re: 30 years - RIP
I was 16 and I was there. I actually remember going under that (now infamous) tunnel and onto the terracing. We arrived about 2.00 and it was absolutely jammed full then and you really couldn't move and there was a momentum which you just couldn't balk against whether you wanted to or not. My feet were literally off the ground on numerous occasions I remember the sway and fall of the crowd and people spilling over onto the pitch several times. That was essentially a disaster waiting to happen, but it was the norm for the time at many grounds and on many terraces. What actually made the disaster eventually occur was erecting the fencing which meant those crushed at the front had nowhere to fall to when shoved from behind and also splitting the terrace into 3 sections making it far more difficult to spread out to the sides forcing far too many people to stay central.

Too many trying to get into not enough space. Those without tickets broke the camel's back, assisted by unwise policing.

Geoff Nulty hit the bar with a header. Didnt Peter sign for us the next season? Apologies if incorrect, just seem to remember it that way.

Re: 30 years - RIP
My overwhelming, total and utter despair at the result made believe for years that we'd been absolutely crap that day, but with the passage of time I have just about been able to watch those Granada highlights again (eventually) and despite not being at our best and Casper being an inured passenger who should never have played, we did make a hat full of really good chances, especially second half. Even with McFaul playing the match of his life in their goal, we should have scored 3 or 4 and in truth they rarely threatened, but they had the white Usain Bolt up front and two long hopeful clearances resulted in 2 break away goals! Sickener doesn't cover it and it's in the top 5 darkest days of my entire life (and I'm 61 next week!)

Re: 30 years - RIP
Just been reading how in the days of no mobile phones people were waiting for the trains to come back to Liverpool after the news broke of the horrible event.
Hoping their friends and loved ones turned up.

Those pictures of their end are exactly how I remember it and tbf it was probably even more packed and more dangerous than ours! The pictures can't convey the wall of noise though, especially after they went one up. Never heard anything quite like it since.

Re: 30 years - RIP
Just listened to Peter Jones again. Heartbreaking words from what such a horrible and sad day for football.
I feel so much for the families who lost loved ones that day. Thirty years, hard to believe it is so long ago. I remember it as if it were yesterday. A week later I was asked to take a wreath to Anfield on behalf of the Supporters Club. That is another day that will live with me forever.

Re: 30 years - RIP
Wasn’t that the day we lost 0-1 at home to Scarborough with a certain Neil Warnock as their manager, a really ugly way of playing the game from Scarborough that day.
Remember listening to the reports coming back from Hillsborough on my radio at Burnley Central and someone on the train moaning about our result and thinking I wonder if they know what went on at Sheffield.
I was also in that dreadful Leppings Lane end for the semi-final I managed to get to the left practicing against those segregated railings which was a squash and a half, and agree it was an accident waiting to happen... and sadly it did.

If this is in reference to 1989 then you’re wrong. I don’t like challenging you like this but those families and the supporters who were there on that day literally went through hell to debunk this myth. Even the Taylor Report acknowledges that it was not ticketless fans who caused the tragedy. Studies clearly show that there was no way so many were going to get through the small number of turnstiles that had been allocated.basil6345789 wrote:Too many trying to get into not enough space. Re: 30 years - RIP
We played Darlington at home that day. They were already relegated from div 4. There was quite a bit of trouble in the ground, some Darlo fans revealed themselves in the Longside just after kick off and got what you would expect. There were a few in the CF stand too who also got a big of a kicking. Things calmed down and then news started to filter through via those in the ground with a radio of what was reported as major crowd trouble at Hillsborough, a pitch invasion and players taken off the pitch.South West Claret. wrote:Wasn’t that the day we lost 0-1 at home to Scarborough with a certain Neil Warnock as their manager, a really ugly way of playing the game from Scarborough that day.

I felt (feel) exactly the same, Dark Cloud. I've had some awful and tragic events in my 61 years as well, but that day is up there with the worst of them!Dark Cloud wrote:My overwhelming, total and utter despair at the result made believe for years that we'd been absolutely crap that day, but with the passage of time I have just about been able to watch those Granada highlights again (eventually) and despite not being at our best and Casper being an inured passenger who should never have played, we did make a hat full of really good chances, especially second half. Yes, Darlington beat us 1-0 that day. Someone near us had a radio and initially, it was thought that it was crowd trouble between Liverpool and Forest fans.
Didnt find out till later the full disaster.
