I was in Paris in 2016 filming a conference.
My colleague and I only had a few hours to get city shots, and I remember saying outside Notre Dame that I don’t get too downhearted not taking in the landmarks - as they will always be there.

The problem with that is that people read your "humour" and don't know it's humour. I've been called an extremist before on here an no one has ever been able to explain why.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote:*Warning, sense of humour failure occuring*
It's ironic though, because i never call people an extremist for a joke (without it being blatantly obvious). I'm serious when i use terms like that, yet i'm also the one who is being accused of making the term meaningless, despite using it seriously and sparingly. It's never people like you who get criticised for it. In fact, i'm pretty sure you're one of those who criticise me.

Oh eck you are so right I'm a retired Sparky that did a service job at the Piccadilly Woolworths they day before it burned and I offloaded a couple of bricks that day. I worked at a lot of Woolworth stores and they have to take a lot of the blame and as for the Burnley store they had a cocnrete plenum packed full of stock, a disaster waiting to happen.Tricky Trevor wrote:Notice on the Sky video it was surrounded in scaffolding. Re: Notre Dame on Fire
It horrific but like a lot of our precious buildings here government help was diminishing and they kept having to put vital repair work off for “more immediate” funding concerns. Now minds will be focused on getting it put right e.g. Windsor castle, and the nation suddenly notices their heritage again. Unfortunately will only fuel the Nationalist cause, whatever caused the fire.
Re: Notre Dame on Fire
Macron, what clown. How can he make such a ludicrous statement as it'll be repaired five years. There's a handful of people in the world with the skill set to restore a building like that, and most of them are already committed to restoration projects.

Re: Notre Dame on Fire
Notre dame has been crumbling away for years. The recent restoration bill was quoted at €180m and their attempts to raise the funds needed only resulted in a promise of €50m from the French government. Travelling the world to scrape together funds yielded next to nothing.
The scaffolding goes up, most of the irreplaceable items are removed including the statues around the spire that burned down. And then it catches fire.
All of a sudden everyone is throwing money at them, with the current figure at €600m and rising.
I can't help thinking it all seems a bit "Cutty Sark", so I would check the restoration receipts for an Italian-made Planet 200 industrial vacuum cleaner.
Thankfully nobody was hurt, which is the most important thing. No building is worth a single human life regardless of its historic value.
How many lives could €600m save I wonder?
The Lord works in mysterious ways.

None, ultimately. Everyone dies. The money could put death off for a while.Long Time Lurker wrote:How many lives could €600m save I wonder?
We spend money on loads of things that are not essential. Buildings, football, pets, travel, a second pair of shoes, dining out, moving to a bigger house, space exploration, computers, TV. The list goes on. Ultimately we make choices that we are going to spend some of our money on our own pleasure and that money will not be spent on saving lives; every time we as individuals or as a country choose to spend money on non-essentials, we are failing to save lives. It's a decision we all have to make, and we all do make, unless we live the life of as hermit.

Luckily no one died, so this fire was not a tragedy. I'm sure the 900 year history of the "building'" contain it's fair share of suffering, oppression, fear, etc. That's tragic...

I'm always a bit uncomfortable that large amounts of money can suddenly appear for these sorts of things - both privately and publicly sources - when more worthy causes exist. Where is the funding from the church itself?

that's an incredibly hard perspective DSR! the fund to rebuild Notre Dame breaks 1 billion, while the United Nations have so far failed to raise 300 million in support of the 1,000 deaths and the thousands homeless/properties destruyed in East Africa's cyclone...... why does the human race value a brick and mortar building over the lives of humans in Africa? And it's not because we all die sometime, it's an odd perception and association...
Re: Notre Dame on Fire
Why indeed? Think of anything that we spend over $300m on in the UK. $5 per head. Cars, Tobacco, wine, knitted sweaters, newspapers, two cups of coffee each per year, a non-league football match, one-fifth of a book about Burnley footballers. Why do we value these things more than these 1,000 lives in Africa? Because we can't save everyone. We save what we can, or perhaps we don't, but we don't bankrupt ourselves to do it.NRC wrote:that's an incredibly hard perspective DSR! the fund to rebuild Notre Dame breaks 1 billion, while the United Nations have so far failed to raise 300 million in support of the 1,000 deaths and the thousands homeless/properties destruyed in East Africa's cyclone...... why does the human race value a brick and mortar building over the lives of humans in Africa? Should I cancel my season ticket until all the people of Africa have been fed? Possibly I should. But I'm not altruistic enough to do that. Choices have to be made on what we spend our money on, and I'm willing to bet there is nobody on this message board who does not spend their own money, from choice, on something that pleases themselves rather than for the benefit of the dying in Africa. It isn't just me. If anyone can genuinely say they enjoy no luxuries at all because all non-essential cash goes to Africa, then I salute you. But for the rest of us, we do not reach the ideal of perfect love for our fellows.

You care so little that instead of just opening the thread to post how little you cared, you actually went and read all the posts so that you can quote the other people who also opened and posted in the thread to tell us how little they cared.
I think we've reached a peak with this level of inanity.
