I enjoyed watching that game again. Early December and the ball was bobbling all over the very uneven pitch.
How the refereeing decisions have changed since then. If a player was clouted now by a sod (very unlikely nowadays) they'd be rolling over and playing dead.

On a thread a bit back, someone was asking when the Beehive was closed off. It seems to be there.

I remember the game, partly because of the two sendings off. What a player Brian O'Neil was, how much ground did he cover? What would he be worth in today's market?

Brian O'Neil was a brilliant midfielder, quite possibly the best midfielder never to play for England.

I used to love watching Brian O’Neil play, brilliant, highly skilled and as hard as nails! As for his worth in today’s market? Probably nothing, he would never complete a game, our Brian wasn’t too interested in taking prisoners.

And how much does Ben Mee remind you of Waldron?

That’s probably true. If memory serves, O’Neil always played in the shadow of Nobby Styles. Even back then playing for a ‘big club’ was an advantage.

Gordon Harris....played only twice more for us after this game. Appeared to leave under a cloud. The next game, at Sheff U, was he involved in an incident which may, or may not, have hasted his departure??

To see Ralph Coates and Brian O'Neil play in the same team was footballing heaven. Passion, Guts and Determination !bob-the-scutter wrote:Brian O'Neil was a brilliant midfielder, quite possibly the best midfielder never to play for England.
None of this current Namby-Pamby, diving and rolling around like you've been shot.

I saw O'Neil play in an England match at Deadwood - it was either Under 23, England B or some representative thing. Help someone please.

I went to that match with my brother. Lots of Burnley fans there to support O’Neil but also because rovers had got relegated. Remember the protests of sack jack ( Marshall) the Burnley fans just enjoyed the night!! O’Neil was together with Ralph is one of my all time hero’s. brilliant player and the winner against united (1968?)was one of the best goals ever at the turf.

I can still see that goal against UTD in my minds eye, the way O'Neil drags himself through the mud in the dying embers of the game then release that thunderbolt of a shot.
He just shades Ralph Coates as my favourite all time Claret.

Re: Willie Morgan with a great cross, Harris rises
Firstly, some cracking highlights there of the game against Arsenal. We'd played them four days earlier at the Turf in the League Cup in another bad tempered clash. Arsenal had three players sent off over the two games.claretfern wrote:Gordon Harris....played only twice more for us after this game. Appeared to leave under a cloud. Claretfern, we played the replay of that League Cup game the following week at Highbury and Gordon Harris played in that before he also played against Sheff Utd the following Saturday. As you well know Gordon was a fiery character and both opponents and his own teammates messed with him at their peril. There may well have been an incident after that game but he did play one more game for us, at home against Everton at the very end of December, before leaving for Sunderland for a reported £70,000 fee. A lot of money in those days.
One of the more serious incidents involving Gordon was actually in the gym at the Turf just a few days before Willie Irvine made his debut for us at the beginning of 1963. Jimmy Adamson had been goading Gordon during the session and his temper took over as he kicked the ball hard against the gym wall and in the same movement kicked Adamson up in the air. As JImmy came down Gordon caught him with a solid punch and and Jimmy landed with blood running from his nose into his mouth. Gordon left the gym without saying a word but I believe Harry Potts walked him round to Adamson's house later where Gordon was supposed to apologise. The word at the Club was that apology never came and the lesson in future was never to mess with Gordon Harris.

Re: Willie Morgan with a great cross, Harris rises
With the winner against ManU coming in the 89th min it was bedlam.
The post goal picture in the papers on Sunday was of the mound of bodies. The first time I had ever seen players so overjoyed. It was usually the handshake and get back to your positions but they were the reigning European Cup holders.

Re: Willie Morgan with a great cross, Harris rises
Many ‘hard men’ in the game back in the day, the ‘handbag carriers’ these days wouldn’t stand a chance. That’s the main reason I like watching Ashley Barnes play, he’s a throw back, I’d bet opposing centre backs hate playing against our Ash!

I also went to Ewood to watch that England under 23 match, when Brian played. As you say, there were plenty of Clarets there cheering Brian on. I seem to remember there were City fans there singing Sha la la la Summerbee. Also didn't Martin Peters play in the game and then break into the England squad? It's a long while ago so I could be wrong, but those memories seem to stick in my mind.

Re: Willie Morgan with a great cross, Harris rises
I watched the whole of this 1967-68 game yesterday. And I enjoyed it. So many really good players, but we were on the decline having finished 14th the season before; a position we finished in '68 and then the next two seasons before going down in '71.
Ashley Barnes would have fitted well into this 60s side.

Blimey I saw myself in the crowd. Just after the sending off they flashed to the crowd which was the Enclosure in front of what now is the Bob Lord. There I was sat on the wall swinging my scarf

Team: Alex Stepney: Len Badger, Bobby Thomson: Brian O'Neil, Graham Cross, Martin Peters: Mike Summerbee, Roger Hunt, Mick Jones, Alan Birchenall & George Armstrong. ( scorer of both goals) 2 players there who were to win World Cup Winners' medals a few months later. (Roger Hunt must have been allowed to play as an over-aged player having been born in 1938) Attendance was 9,251.Vino blanco wrote:I also went to Ewood to watch that England under 23 match, when Brian played. Was playing Colin Blant at centre forward an experiment? How useless was he?

He played Centre Forward in the Reserves ( seemed to be preferred to Willie Irvine around the time of this game) it was the following season when Colin Blant found his true position in the number 6 shirt.Steve1956 wrote:Was playing Colin Blant at centre forward an experiment? How useless was he?
