We Never Score From Corners

Post by Hipper » Wed Apr 24, 2019 8:42 am

On TV just before the Hendrick goal at Chelsea they showed a stat: we have scored a goal every fifteen corners which, along with a few other clubs, was the highest ratio of success. With Hendricks goal from the one corner we got that stat will be better still.

Of course I realise we don't get as many corners as most other clubs - in fact it is ALL other clubs!

Even so, this is a long way from the pasts 'never scoring from a corner'.

I think the corners from Dwight and Westwood have gone up several notches compared with our past efforts

Yes we seemed to have worked out how to get the better of zonal marking. We have two great corner takers at the moment who put the ball in the 6 yard box. Zonal marking on the 6 yard line is designed for corners around the penalty spot. If defenders run back towards goal they can only head it in the net or over, so they haven't that same desire to head it incase of a big mistake.

The next logical step is to win more corners then

This. Actually delivering the ball beyond the first defender is always going to put you in a better position to score.

The improvement in Westwood's corners this season has been quite remarkable - and I suspect it's testament to a lot of dull, repetitive, but incredibly diligent practice on the training ground.

You should watch his warm up routine before the game - his shooting is equally as abysmal. I genuinely can’t remember the last time he hit the target and, as he had to on Monday night, he usually has to apologise to someone in the crowd behind the goal because he’s hit them with the ball!

Think we should ship him out this summer, get what we can for him and replace him with an upgrade.

Our corner record has been up there for the past three seasons so Westwood and McNeil taking them hasn't made any significant difference.

Stop it with your facts, it'll get in the way of people slagging off our players.

We could have scored from lots of corners had we banned Robbie Blake and Robbie Brady from taking them

Against Spurs we scored our second from a corner that shouldn't have been a corner (after being pored over for a few hours by dozens of analysts from every possible TV angle)

In my opinion we are putting in better balls more consistently than recent times. Thats not a way to slag off any of our current or former players, despite what some will see.

I also think "tactically" we've been better at corners on the whole, playing the deep ball has been very effective. Maybe we haven't scored from more or less, but in my opinion we are causing teams more problems than ever before from our set pieces.

Agree regarding this. There's also nearly a foul throw every week and they never get given!

We have been brilliant at set pieces in the 2nd half of the season, in both offensive and defencive areas

the amount of space Ben Mee manages to get himself into he should be scoring 4-6 goals per season, bloody square head !

And Tarkowski. Clear headers, invariably headed over.
