United v City...The Horns of a Dilemma

Just thinking this morning about the Manchester derby tonight and it got me wondering...obviously United fans will want to beat City but how many of them will see it as handing the title to Liverpool, who they seem to hate more than City, and may just sneakilly want a City win?

However if they want Top 4, they will need a result tonight!

I don't get it. If you support a team then you want them to win - was similar a few weeks ago when Everton fans were on SSN saying they wanted to lose against Man City because they didn't want to help Liverpool.

If City play anything like they can though they'll have too much for United.

Funny listening to the odd United fan still thinking like it's a decision for them to make. City's title bid will be getting derailed on Sunday anyway.

If we were in utds shoes and bastards were in liverpools, I’d throw one in and take fifth right now.

You shouldn’t ever want your own team to lose.

The only way I'd want us to lose any game would be very specific in that we'd already be safe, couldn't move up or down a position, and us losing meant Rovers were relegated.

All the United fans I know want City to win.
Its probably not universal, but certainly the majority.

I hope City win. I want it to be us that hand it to liverpool.

I'm a Burnley fan and would still want us to win no matter what the consequences were for Blackburn. I'd just hope that, if they were in that position, it wouldn't be us involved in a key game.

I think there will be a lot of people saying stuff on the internet and other media outlets, but when the game kicks off they will all want their team to win regardless.

If they don't, then they probably hate Liverpool more than they actually support Man United, which is more than a little sad.

Very true. I suppose situations like this show just how much passion there is in football, even on the level of dislike. I can't imagine ever wanting Burnley to lose but if the situation were right then I could possibly feel a little indifferent providing it made no difference to us and even then I'm not so sure. The really odd thing is I know that many United fans may want a City win but they will still be there tonight, 70k or so of them, which begs the question if you want the opposition to win why go to the game, surely not to cheer the opposition on? Weird.

It never works out like you imagine anyway, remember Liverpool easily beating Blackburn (under Dalglish of all people) - sometime last century - which would have handed the title to Man United if they hadn't blown it themselves at West Ham.

Who are these "Blackburn Rovers" that you speak of?

The United half of my family are all resigned to a drubbing from city. Most have said that if it stops liverpool from winning the PL, it will be reasonable consolation.

I just hope its a decent match.

I just can't imagine Solskjaer mulling over whether he would prefer City or Liverpool to win the title when picking his team and tactics.

The fans can talk but at the end of the day they need the points for the CL spots and the success of your own club has to be more important than thwarting a rival.

Solskjaer is probably mulling over whether he can find 11 players at the club who give a toss about United's results, let alone anyone else's

I don’t care what the game is and what impact it may have on other teams, I always want us to win (and I include meaningless pre-season friendlies in that).

If us losing meant Blackburn not getting promoted (I’m going for something that is vaguely possible), then it’s an absolute no brainer. I find it hard to believe any Burnley fan would dispute that?

If we lost and it meant no play offs for us (champs league) - but we won and Ba$tards could win the league ........ which would you prefer?

Anyone who would ever be happy for their club to lose isn't a proper supporter anyway and their opinions aren't worth much.

Uber fan alert. I find it hard to believe you’d prefer us to win a meaningless end of season game than lose and stop Blackburn getting promoted and with it 200 million quid or whatever it is now. But each to their own!

I know quite a few United fans (who doesn’t), and to a man they want to lose tonight.

They’ve accepted their lightyears behind City now, they seem to struggle to accept the same applies to Liverpool. For whatever reason, City they still see as more of an annoyance than a sworn enemy (probably because they are still relatively ‘new’ to the elite table) whereas they had finally overhauled Liverpool’s title count and I imagine never thought they would become an issue again.

I’m a total neutral, don’t care who wins the title, but it is quite amusing seeing the United fans squirming over the thought of Liverpool nicking it.

No, I'm simply a Burnley supporter who supports the team regardless and wants the team to do as well as it can.

I feel I’m one of the few on here who wants Liverpool to win it. Firstly because they entertain me more than Citeh and secondly I don't want another dynasty starting.
Not interested in tonight, they lose it on Sunday just before 4pm.

It would never get to a situation that we had to rely on Blackburn to win for us to either be relegated or win an honor
The Lancashire Police would have put the busses on again

Preston 1 Burnley 1 April 1973 after we made it 1-1 the game was played out with quite abit of time left..for a draw.no one going out for a win so we won the second div with the point and Preston who needed a point to stay in the div got theirs...

it's a good job that fans' opinion stops there and doesn't (hopefully) translate to the management and playing staff - this is very clear, it's against the law. It's called match fixing, and if we extend to betting money going on the game then that is fraud.

Fans should never want their team to throw one in

If the Fiddlers were Liverpool, it'd take the sting out of it knowing our victory over City handed them it. Quite a nice asterisk against their name for future banter.

Excellent point. Liverpool could have thrown one in to deny Manu the title but played it straight and took the 3 pts. As has been mentioned elsewhere this is more about Utd getting antsy cos Liverpool could get their champion of champions title back in very little time.

Strange that two sides who both need a point would go defensive, not to lose. This was 1973 and word has still not reached Chelsea.

I work in Manchester and I've not spoken to one united fan who wouldn't want to throw the game.

Its all elementary though, they don't need to throw the game as city will maul them anyway. They are dire.

You’d think United might be more irritated by the threat of City than Liverpool to be honest.
I’m no Liverpool fan for a variety of reasons but all this ‘imagine the horror’ of Liverpool actually winning the league is highly neurotic. We had to live through United winning every year and we’ll no doubt have to get used a whole lot more of City in the future. So one title for Liverpool doesn’t bother me much. It would be one in the eye for the both Manchester clubs whose fans I find every bit as nauseating. Plus they deserve it, spent a lot loss than City and have only lost one match.
