Laptop recommendation

Post by cricketfieldclarets » Thu Apr 25, 2019 8:44 pm

Looking for a new one for personal use, separate from my work one.

Got an idea of what I want but anyone any advice for or against any appreciated.

Its primarily for storing pictures and videos, maybe editing and creating stuff with them and browsing / films. No need for anything for gaming etc.

Want a good amount of storage (ideally 1TB hard drive), decent ram (8gb or more) and small / lightweight. Almost cetainly dont want MAC and probably want HP. But Dell have always been OK and my work one is Lenovo (and the keyboard layout is slightly different to HP, so not against sticking with Lenovo). Has to be windows.

Also want it to be small and lightweight. 13inch or thereabouts.

Thanks

Depends on budget. Lenovo X1 Carbon can be customised to your requirements, but it’s pricy - but also my preferred choice

Another one here for Lenovo - had quite a few others in the past but nothing, in my opinion, comes close to the Lenovos that I have had.

Want something that I will have and use for a good few years - 5 or so. So dont mind paying a bit more.
But not too much. 3 figures will do :D :D

My current Lenovo is almost six years old and is still as fast as the day I bought it.

If you Google 'Dell outlet uk', you'll find quite a lot of good prices for decent spec laptops.

The outlet specialises in either returned or unsold kit. As its checked over by Dell themselves it'll be in very good condition. Sometimes they clear laptops and PCs if they've changed the model do some will be unopened boxes as new.

Hope this helps.

Generally I'd recommend having a look at the Dell Outlet store, often some decent stuff there. You want to be looking at an 8th generation processor and at least 8GB of RAM. Something like the Inspiron or XPS 13.

You may have issues with the 1TB of storage though. Laptops that come with those often have the rest of the spec to match and won't be coming in under a grand. If you really need it (can photos/videos be stored on an SD card/cloud/external drive) then you may be better buying one separately and swapping it yourself.

Wildcard pick: Xiaomi Mi Notebook Air

Straight from China (where all the stuff is made anyway) Xiamoi is making good stuff these days and starting to make big inroads in mobile phones and laptops.
They have a Windows 13" laptop designed to be like a Macbook air with good specs, dedicated graphics (which does help with video editing) etc

https://www.trustedreviews.com/reviews/ ... p-air-13-3" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Buy an external HD for all your mass storage, no reason it has to be internal just for storing pics and videos.
Also are you going to be lugging this laptop around? So many people I know have a laptop that never moves from their desk, in which case get a desktop and enjoy the perks!

Edit:
I use a £200 Chinese Microsoft Surface clone for basic web browsing, Youtube, email etc when away from my desktop PC. Can even do some basic Photoshop/Lightroom on it.

Key factor was the weight compared to a laptop when traveling and I needed something to do basic tasks with and transfer camera photos to a hard drive. Also does the job fine when I want to sit on the sofa and watch Youtube or browse UTC with the convenience of a touch screen tablet. These types of 2in1 tablet are being updated all the time by brands not well know in the west. I recommend https://techtablets.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for good info on these.

Thanks all. No objection to chinese. Was lookimg at a huwawei one amd obviously lenovo are chinese

Has to be a laptop as i will use to backup pictures while away.

I suppose the storage doesnt HAVE to be physical. I can always transfer and then back up online and on a seperate hard drive (already do that). Just my amazon photos doesnt back up as well as it should from my phone amd is slow to backup from laptop. Also not as slick to order all the pictures as it should be. (Not to mention they might one day change the cost etc for me to store amd or download what ive backedup).

Also needs to be a laptop as i will use it when travelling. More than once ive lost pictures that havent been backed up. Once in dubai when camera was stolen and omce in cuba when iphone was irrepairably water damaged and had no wifi for icloud backup :evil:

When I traveled to South Africa and did some safari photography I went full paranoid on back ups as it cost so much to take them. Hard drive in my hand and hold luggage, memory cards on my person.

Yep. Its pictures of daughters firsts that i dont want to lose.

My safari and kilimanjaro original pictures are on a battered old laptop for which i dont know the password. Luckily most are online although not full resolution.

I will sort them out one day.

Best bet is to google them and look at the benchmarks to get an idea of performance

e.g. https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cp ... 40+1.60GHz" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cp ... 40+2.50GHz" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cp ... 0H&id=3403" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

You can see there's a big difference between the two i5s so you need to be looking at specific processors to compare properly

CC. I asked the same question around sept 17. Just wanted Word, Excel, plenty of photo space etc. We got some great replies and examples from the posters on this site, many of whom were really well versed. We ended up with a Lenovo idea pad 320s, it's brilliant, quick, easy to use, good graphics. If we hadn't sought advice on here I'm not sure what we would have bought. Thumbs up for The Bee Hole End.

Will take a look. Seen what looks like s good deal on a hp pavillion 14 which will do everything I need. But like the 'look' and feel of the huwawei matebook d. But not sure the spec is any better and is quite a bit more expensive.

My lenovo work laptop is great BUT always seem to have issues connecting and disconnecting to and from wifi.
