I know this continued, albeit to a lesser extent, during May but I've managed to incorporate a solution which has already trapped a few.
New registrations now have to have their first posts approved before they become visible to everyone. The mods get a notification and we are then able to delete the new user and the post. Hopefully this will work and keep these unwanted posts away.
Big thanks to those who have been reporting them, it's been a big help.

Thanks Rick_Muller - I'd only set the new restrictions on the Bee Hole End forcing the first post to be approved.
