Who is going to vote on Thursday?

After all the debate about Brexit, who is going to bother voting in the local elections??

I am lucky as I have a Burnley and Padiham independent to vote for, or I would not bother.

I don’t know if it’s true but I read that Burnley council intends to merge with Rossendale council.

Not a good idea!!

Going to sound ridiculously pretentious, but every time I think about not voting, I remember that its not a universal right.

Lib Dem, as the only leaflet I've seen is from them

I will. My late father in law told me once that men like him fought and a lot died for us to have the right to vote therefore I will.

Doesn't sound pretentious, Lancs, you're absolutely right !

If the number of leaflets was the measure of voting in our ward, then the Greens would walk it !! Many many trees seem to have paid the ultimate price in the effort to get their Candidate on to Burnley Council in Whittlefield with Ightenhill ! :D

Lib Dem’s would be a terrible vote in Burnley. Birktwistle should never get near politics again

They have long term Green councillors in Lancaster, but not out here or I'd probably vote for them I think. Someone like the Greens or the Lib Dems tend to be better at a local level.

We have the famously useless Morecambe Bay Incompetents (they called themselves the Morecambe Bay Independants) but they were hilariously useless so I'm against independents unless I actually know them.

Funny, isn't it, that Kippers support proportional representation yet they call the EU undemocratic despite the fact that we use PR to elect our MEPs.

No local elections North of the border this year,so we'll have to wait until the European's if they happen.

I note UKIP are only standing in 6 of the 15 seats up for grabs,so whether that will benefit either of the main parties,or whether the Kippers stay at home we'll have to see.

What caught my eye is one Peter Pike is standing in the Cliviger/Worsthorne ward at the tender age of 81,normally this would be a safe Conservative seat, expect the crazy days when the BNP captured it,however with the national situation and his name recognition you can't rule out a return to the town hall for Peter.

I won't be letting the bullshite of national politics influence me. I will vote for the best local candidate who works hard for our local community. Which for me means I will be voting Lib Dem.

I’d imagine the Peter Pike is only standing because the likely candidate (Andy Devanney) stood in the by-election down in Burnley Wood 2-3 weeks ago and there is nobody who was willing to undertake the political equivalent of a suicide mission in that ward!

I don’t think that Peter expects to return to frontline politics anytime soon....

That's why i stated in normal times the Conservatives would romp home,i'd still expect them to hold the seat, they have a high-profile candidate defending (one of the Towneley's),but UKIP are standing and could attract some regular Conservative voters, equally many Conservative voters might sit at home,i definitely think there will be some surprises come next Thursday/Friday,whether that ward is one we'll have to wait and see,but having a quick glance through the recent results,it's not as safe a Conservative seat as people assume,in addition the LibDems aren''t standing,so their votes are up for grabs also.

I'd agree but many voters seemingly think differently,it's always disappointing when good local councillors from any party are swept aside due to the prevailing national climate, but it's happened before and will no doubt happen again.

Not me, I don't mix with the peasants, I do a postal vote in the comfort of my own home.

Ps remember it's not about who you want in power etc, vote with your head, not your heart.
Being a robot and ticking labour/conservative etc just because you always have, won't help.

UKIP are standing in only 3 wards, not 6, Hapton with Park, Gawthorpe and Cliviger with Worsthorne ...

Speaking to some friends who are politically active locally, the canvessing Tories are getting some abuse because of the handling of Brexit and Teresa May, whilst Labour are getting pelters from military families or ex servicemen households as well as from Brexiteers ... ;) ;)

Not a clue who I will vote for but it has to be a pro Brexit party, which rules out Labour, libs, Tories and Greens. So unless there is something different on there I will probably just put a line across the paper.

If you want Brexit so are not voting Labour because they are not for Brexit, and I don't want Brexit and I'm not voting Labour because they are for Brexit it rather suggests (on an admittedly v.small sample of 2!) that their attempts not to offend anyone are offending everyone.

I'm confused why brexit is so salient in a local election campaign, but if that's your choice fair enough,i despise Nicola Sturgeon but have a very active and competent SNP councillor so he gets my vote, surely the UK public are smart enough to distinguish between different elections, and the impact that voting can have, take Burnley as an example if Labour have a bad night it's feasible Burnley will go to NOC,it's unlikely but not impossible.

Apologies get them mixed up with the B&P Indies who are standing 6,surprised the Lib Dems are only contesting 7 seats, and yet the Greens to their credit have a full slate,i know Burnley was a heavily leave area, but by default the Greens could pick up lots of remain voters, purely by being on the ballot in some wards.

Interesting anecdotal evidence,i have seen reports of the main parties canvassers having a rough time in other places also, however there is a number of seats nationwide where the ballot paper will only have 3 options,in some wards there might be as less as two, usually Con/Lab,but some instances of Con/Lib Dems or Lab/Lib Dems, this is mainly due to the decline of UKIP,so if you're a brexit leaning voter, your choice is limited which is why the best option is too vote on local everyday topics, anyone that wants to send a brexit message is better waiting until May,assuming of course the EU Elections go ahead, which is anyone's guess.

When we talk about local elections and who does what my experience would be who is the best person to challenge the Labour party at full council and also at committee level and I mean speaking just look at the attendance levels of the sitting councillors and their voting

Lowbankclaret what exactly do the bpip stand for reading their leaflets when they talk about only being interested about local issues which is very easy to criticise when you are not in power so we can assume they will be putting no candidate's forward for the county elections or God forbid the mp elections because let's not forget they are only interested in local issues

I have already cast my postal vote for what will be the 3rd placed candidate in my ward. Easy Tory win in both the ward and Solihull Council (32 Cons, 11 Greens, 4 LDs, 1 UKIP, 2 Labour, 1 Independent - 17 seats up for election)

Be careful that it's a line and not a cross. I once attended the general election count at Pendle and one paper had a cross diagonally from corner to corner. The Returning Officer, who must have been either a crook or seriously thick, decided that even though the paper wasn't filled in in accordance with electoral rules, there was no doubt that the vote was intended for Gordon Prentice because the junction of the cross met in the middle of his name. Basically, he was saying that there was no possibility it was a spoilt ballot.

Might be safer to write "None of the above" over all the boxes.

Vote for hard working independents.
Or UKIP/Greens
Despite not being councillors already the UKIP candidates of Gawthorpe and Hapton do a lot for the community.
Hopefully the Gawthorpe ward isn't won by the worn out Labour councillors of the past.

But it will need a lot of Labour candidates getting defeated for the council to change for the better.

I am free of local elections until 2021.
However, what I say to everyone, is look for a local person, who cares about your community and who is articulate enough to represent the views shared by most in your community. Someone, who has thought about what is needed and practical/deliverable for you and your neighbours and will put effort into ensuring that the project(s) has/have the best chance.

Voting is important and a right. Locally, it can make a real difference.

Good luck for great outcomes for every community.

Green I think at this moment in time.

The only one who actually does something in my ward, even tho she isn’t currently the councillor.

Local issues are considerably different to the national ones, so I’ll vote for who I think will work hard for everyone in my area.
