Why? For the foul on Barnes as we breakaway!?

Difficult decision. My immediate thought was yellow.

Thought process for the referee

So the foul itself is no more than a foul and certainly not reckless. No caution

The promising attack scenario. Out wide deep in own half. (Couldnt see what else was in the wider vicinity) debateable caution.

First caution of game? Am I setting my stall out for every innocuous foul ? No caution.

It's a tactic that City employ in every game. Foul as soon as they lose the ball to stop the opposition. With it being in the opponent's half and spread around the team they normally get away without a booking.

to be fair, Barnes seriously threw himself on the floor, not really sure Sterling could do much about it

I believe the phrase you're looking for is a tactical foul,precisely the point OGS was making in mid-week.

Certainly very unusual not to be awarded a yellow with such a momentum breaking foul. Looked like Barnes went down easily. But if it’s the other way about then it’s a yellow card.

Mentioned during the game that this side of the game might be affected with players/teams reputations subconsciously for a ref.

If that was a Cuty break and Sterling/Sane was running forward with the ball it’d be a yellow just because you’d think there’s a chance something might happen.

When it’s Barnes in that position could a ref think “nothing will probably come of it”.

Had it been City breaking quickly from deep and one of ours had cynically fouled to stop the attack a Yellow would definitely have been shown.

I think it was a yellow, it was lazy and deliberate. Ash was never going to out sprint city but a decent ball and they’d of had a potential problem.

That’s exactly what I said at the game, the fact that we wouldn’t have broke as quickly shouldn’t make any difference!!

He should have been booked if not for that but when he blocked the quick free kick in 2nd half.

He was constantly in the refs ear all game. I like sterling, a great player and seems a decent bloke but he wound me up with his moaning today.

Same as usual refs don’t give us decisions against the bigger clubs which in case means virtually everyone else take Southampton’s goalie clattering into Barnes who was then booked

It was an obvious yellow ? A player advancing forward deliberately tripped from behind ...
If Barnes tripped Sterling the card would of been straight out without a shadow of doubt ..

Every time we play City at the Turf Sterling looks a very ordinary player,I suppose it's not his favourite venue,

It was a yellow card all day long and why it wasn't today I'll never know. (Unless of course there's a referees conspiracy and they try their absolute damnest not to give out cards to the "big" teams. Surely not!!)

Always find the insight of a qualified ref hugely interesting...but I thought the fact it was clearly cynical, with no attempt to try and win the ball, overrode everything else and made it a mandatory yellow card?

As others have said, if it had been the other way round the yellow would have been out before Sterling hit the ground.

Should have been a red. With Barnes's pace it was a goal scoring opportunity !!

Yellow for sure.

Had that been the other way round it would have been a yellow card to one of our players - just like if Barnes’ handball was committed by Kompany we’d definitely have been awarded a penalty.

Intelligent fouling, breaking up a counter attack at source, stopping the transition into attack in areas where you get fewer yellows.

Sterling should have been sent off for the number of yellow card offences and constant whining at the ref

If it had been the other way round and Sterling was fouled the whole stadium would have been booing and calling him a cheat for diving. It was a foul but he went down very easy. Thought the ref was correct not to book him but he committed another couple of fouls later and he was lucky to get away with not being booked for persistent fouling.
