I think a few people need to re-watch Wood’s “gilt edged chance” or “touch like an elephant” to perhaps appreciate the amount of spin on the ball when he touched it....it was nowhere near as easy as people are making out...

I've re watched it about 10 times now. The spinning ball isn't the reason for missing it. It glances his toe. The spin didnt change the trajectory of the pass. Can't have the touch of an elephant when he barely touches it! It was a gilt edged chance, and a terrible touch. He was almost anonymous today. Missed a sitter. And didnt trouble their back four at all. Just look at the work ethic of Wood compared to Barnes, Vydra and Aguero. I can forgive a poor touch. I cant forgive laziness. And frankly, I dont think he tries hard enough. Too much pottering about pretending to close them down for me

One assumes you haven’t tried to control a spinning ball at that speed. Nothing to do with trajectory....Barnes and Wood work well as a team and have to feed on scraps in games like today against probably the best team the prem has ever seen.

One assumes incorrectly. And also misses the point.

Heaton 8 - some fabulous saves and just one error when rounded
Lowton 8 - some terrific last gasp challenges, unlucky for the goal, and just one error when Mee cleared off the line
Tarkowski 9 - fabulous on the whole and good skill
Mee 9 - did everything that could be expected and more against his old side, miraculous clearance
Taylor 7 - Bernardo Silva had a little too much joy for my liking
Hendrick 6 - covered back well but some mistakes and little threat against the poor Zinchenko
Cork 8 - battled well against one of the most skilful midfield 5s he will ever play against
Westwood 8 - as Cork
McNeil 5 - unfortunate he was against the outstanding Walker and didn’t really get in the game
Barnes 7 - ruffled a lot of feathers
Wood 6 - no joy against Kompany

Vydra 5 - after he came on they were starting to bring on defenders so got little space
Gudmundsson 5 - looked rusty

A fabulous performance of shape, desire and discipline, but just lacked that freedom of mind to play incisively. When we did, we nearly scored, particularly the Wood chance where a heavy touch cost him. City were sweating throughout, in a way rarely seen, and paid us the ultimate compliment by finishing with 6 defenders and taking balls into corners.

Our tactics seemed largely right on this occasion, but it was a shame the impeccable Walker and Kompany were playing on the same side as our main creativity. Their weakness was on the other flank but we didn’t target it.

They deserved to win but only just.

Heaton 8 - some solid saves and decent distribution
Lowton 8 - another difficult task dealt with admirably
Tarkowski 9* - immense
Mee 9 - pretty much just as immense
Taylor 7 - a few loose balls but to be expected
Hendrick 8 - thought he did a great job for the team
Westwood 7 - steady
Cork 7 - as above
McNeil 5 - a bit overawed I thought but will have learnt a lot. Perhaps time for a rest
Barnes 8 - superb hold up play, caused some problems
Wood 5 - disappointing, thought he could have used his strength better. Fluffed his lines with THE chance.

Vydra 7 - good cameo. Think he has a lot to offer to the team. Would like to see him start against Everton.
JBG 6 - ok

Lots of effort today, and amazing defensive heroics, but I think it would’ve been pretty criminal if we’d got anything from the game. Even though they weren’t on their A game, City are a formidable team. A lot to build on though and we are fully deserving of a place in this league.

Can't fault the effort all around today. I think Vydra's movement gives us something different up front too and hopefully we will utilise him more pre-season and see if he can break into the first team as a regular starter.

Heaton 9-Another captains performance
Lowton 8-Worked hard, very unlucky with their goal.
Tarkowski 9-Fantastic second half.
Mee 9*-Just shaded MOM from his partner.
Taylor 7-His defending has really improved, but he can be wasteful when in possession at times.
Hendrick 8-I was staggered when he was taken off.
Westwood 8-Brilliant in 1st half
Cork 8-Solid, back to something like his best
McNeil 6-looked leggy in last few games to me. Surprised he wasn't subbed, but can understand SD wanting the lad to finish on a high.
Barnes 8-a handful as always.
Wood 7-held up play well at times, but guilty of poor control for me with our best chance.

Thought Vydra played well when he was given his chance. Offered something different and a couple of good lay off's.

Heaton 9
Lowton 8 (really, really unlucky with the goal as he did brilliantly)
Tarks 8
Mee 9*
Taylor 8
Cork 7
Westwood 8
Hendrick 7
McNeil 7 (Was clearly told to do much more defensively which he stuck to manfully, but then was unfortunately knackered when City foolishly invited us to take the game to them in the final 20 minutes)
Barnes 8 (Gave them plenty to think about)
Wood 6 (failed to take our one clear chance and never troubled them at the back)

Vydra 7 (Glad to see him given some decent game time and actually thought he looked sharp. The service was rubbish though)
JBG 6 (I really like him and was calling for him to get a run as he can beat a man and get quality crosses in, but he was poor unfortunately)

As all have said, a brilliant rearguard action against an excellent, but strangely nervous and out of sorts city side. Their left back was utter bobbins, but we couldn't get McNeil over to run at him which was a shame. Pep showed his total respect for what we're capable of by shutting up shop shortly after the goal and actually inviting us on to them, but we seemed too knackered to take advantage and we didn't trouble them or create anything, which was the only disappointing thing about the game. We did have opportunities to get balls in, but they were tame and most of our crosses ended up with City breaking away! That was a shame because it only needs one quality ball and we can be lethal! Well done SD for subbing (fairly) early and giving something different a try.
