How many disabled fans do we have

Post by Grumps » Sun Apr 28, 2019 6:52 pm

Genuine question, the two new developments seem to have more spaces for far more disabled fans than I have ever seen on the ground. Do we have lots who don't attend because of the previous poor facilities, or are we hoping to attract more disabled fans?

Enough for their own supporters club.

don't think I'd want to sit in a wheel chair open to the elements ! the new facility looks superb so hopefully it will attract more fans, you would imagine the club has done their research on this.

Even if there were only 2 disabled fans ... i’d rather the club had the best facilities for them than just half arsing something and making do.

I would guess the one between the new stands will still get the weather

so would I but I think you would have to be very naive to think the club hasn't done research to estimate growth

Agree, but if there was only two, it wouldn't need the new developments, my question was if it was for existing fans, or attracting new ones, no agenda just a question

Probably both i’d guess.

Have better facilities for the existing disabled fans. Also we can now show how our facilities are great for any fans who were maybe unsure about coming.

Win win situation really.

I think minimum suitable capacity for disabled supporters is determined by premier league rules.

There are many wheelchair users who frequent the other corner, maybe next season they might prefer the elevated position in the new stand.

I presume there are new toilet facilities in there as well. Long overdue.

Is the disabled section for physical disabilities only? Because I've supported people on the Turf many years ago who were as mobile as me but needed support to access the community.

I'm presuming the new facilities are available to disabled fans of the away team too ?
That may attract people who were previously reluctant to follow their team.
Top class facilities can only be a good thing for all.

It's irrelevant how many disabled fans we have, legislation dictates how many spaces we have to have in the ground and I think it's either 144 or 154.

I presume the 2 stands will be catering for both home and away disabled fans also.

Don't think so, the away section has its own disabled area.

I asked a question to the club in regards to the new stands when they was first proposed - is the new stand for all disabilities or only those with ambulant issues? I didn’t get a clear response at the time and I may ask the question again for 2 reasons.

Firstly, whilst my Ulcerative Colitis is not always an issue for me, when it is bad I cannot attend because I require good, clean toilet facilities regularly through the match.

Secondly, my 9 year old is on the Autistic Spectrum and is often spooked by large crowds. He has been before (cup games in JHU) and used his ear defenders, but he didn’t enjoy it as much as he could have because he was very anxious about the crowds in the concourse.

I’ll not be too upset if it is deemed that the priority would be for ambulant disabled fans, but if it is half empty every game and I could use the facility but I am refused, I think I’d feel a little put out to be honest. It wouldn’t be every game, just the odd game.

Not sure if this is relevant but when I was a support worker around 9 years ago the club gave support staff a free ticket if the disabled person was receiving a certain threshold of what was Disability Living Allowance. Not sure if that's still the case but the guy I supported was able to ambulate efficiently and required no physical support.

I was put on the autistic spectrum 10 years ago and would welcome the upcoming Kingsford stadium to accommodate me away from the riff raff element of our support
