Power to the People!
For younger posters this comedy series called Citizen Smith was on in the 70's and one that was enjoyed by many, a Fulham Supporter as Tooting is fairly near Fulham and Chelsea.

We used to have a laugh or two with a fella at work who was a member of the communist party, the 70's was a great decade for many personal reasons, and in comparison was my favourite one so far.
What are your recollections of the 70's good or bad?

CC. Blimey, tell us more. Forgot to add that I was 16 in 1970 and look back with fond memories. I still think it was the best era ever in all sorts of ways and feel privelaged to have been part of it. Long hair, platforms, flairs and some of the most colourful shirts ever, amazing groups and individuals were emerging, thats when they played proper music. Top of the pops and radio Luxembourg. Oh and I was about 5 stone slimmer

Re: Power to the People!
My personal memories are good as I had left school in 1970, could fall in and out of a job as I pleased, travelled cheaply (at least until the OPEC Oil crisis) up and down the country watching 'the lads', and enjoyed the music (up to the punk era anyway) and basically did what I liked with little responsibility.
Having said that, when I look back at the state of the country, football grounds, industrial strife etc., I see it more as about me growing up rather then the times being generally good.

Re: Power to the People!
Left school in '69 and lived free and easy for years. Main recollections: Music (mainly progressive rock but I just loved music of all kinds - apart from soul), drugs, booze, football (and getting in a few 'scrapes'), silly clothes (loon pants, flared sleeve tops and lacey shirts) and lot's of sex (those were the days before you had to get written permission on a contract to avoid being accused of rape or abuse). Even though I didn't earn a lot I was NEVER skint. Didn't run a car (didn't want one). Going out in the street barefoot if I wanted and no-one looked twice. Meeting my first (eventual) wife.
Of course we never thought it was going to end did we?

76 was the best year for me when I moved back north and rid myself of all the Villa and Brum City fans at work plus one particularly annoying Fulham supporter.

Re: Power to the People!
Citizen Smith was excellent - Robert Lyndsey went on to become one of our finest actors (mainly in serious roles I think). Anyone remember him in the Derek-Hatton-like role in GBH? He was a thinly disguised parody of Hatton and a scouse mate of mine said the title stood for Goodbye Hatton (not greivous bodilly harm).

Re: Power to the People!
Both. The marriage outlasted the 70s (just). 82 saw that come to it's logical conclusion. My second came in 89 and has somehow miraculously lasted until now. FFS sake, why did you ask, it's made me realise it's been 30 bloody years. Don't think the Krays did much longer than that.claretburns wrote:Was that the 70's or your first marriage Houseboy?

Citizen Smith was very funny and like most programmes on TV in the 70s, we really looked forward to seeing it. GBH was an excellent little series and Lyndsey proved what a great actor he was.houseboy wrote:Citizen Smith was excellent - Robert Lyndsey went on to become one of our finest actors (mainly in serious roles I think). I lived not far from Tooting Broadway and every time I went past the tube station was tempted to shout "Power to the people!" with my fist clenched in the air but never had the nerve to do it (just as well).
The 70's were brilliant and, as Mary Hopkins said, we thought those days would never end. Flares, Doc Martins, parallels, penny collars, Gary Glitter being the source of most football songs, denim jackets with sew-on V signs saying Up Burnley, Cat's Whiskers, Angels, the Circ, the Falcon with Burnley players in on a Saturday night, the Broadswords, the excitement of all the trouble on and around footy grounds on a Saturday afternoon, amazing singers, pop groups and songs, but mainly being a teenager!

Re: Power to the People!
Bloody hell mate, The Broadswords. Monday night rock disco with the guy who's name just escapes me but he was a teacher in his day job. He worked at the Albion in Clayton as well. Always finished the night off with May You Never by John Martyn as I recall. Bottles of Newcy Brown made it a good all round night. The drugs made The Broadswords a bit on the dangerous side given that it was on the balcony of the shopping centre, seen a few people threatening to leap off after indulging.Claret wrote:Citizen Smith was very funny and like most programmes on TV in the 70s, we really looked forward to seeing it. PS: really wish you had done the Power to the People thing in Tooting - you could have been famous.

It's Mary Hopkin, not Hopkins, and she sang those words in the 60s not the 70s.

The 'milk a cow blindfolded' was actually a radio prank. The rather gullible presenter read it out and later had to apologise.
