The Longside, old & new 1996

Post by bob-the-scutter » Wed May 01, 2019 6:50 pm

Cost an eye-watering £5`000`000 at the time. Never seen this before stumbling on it tonight. Thought i`d share although no doubt been on here before.

Not seen that, but I will when I have 30 mins spare.

Though a long way away from the atmosphere of the original LS, and having many faults, we did seem to show some ambition by building these stands. Whilst not ideal they are at least imposing structures. Turf Moor dominates the townscape as you come down Manny road.

Min 2.16 - the architect opens the drawings and doesn't even notice that the Jimmy Mac stand isn't central........

Wow brings back lots of memories for me I was only 11 and had only just started going ont’ turf to watch. My dad a lifelong fan wouldn’t take me as he vowed never to pay to watch a game the day Burnley sold Jimmy Mc he was a stubborn git and despite me going home and away for almost 10 years I still could not get him to go ont’ turf even when I said I would pay.

Is this the video that puts up the line ups for the Hull game, the last game in front of the old Longside? If so I think it might show the name John Borland. Not sure why, he didn’t play in that game.

If you see what figures people are now bandying around to re-develop/replace the Cricket Field and or the Bob Lord Stand, the figure of £5.2m for the demolition of the Longside and the Bee-Hole end, and the Construction of the two stands was the bargain of the Century ( After the signing of Jimmy Mac, obviously ! )

Then factor in the fact that because of our one season in the 2nd Division ( 1994-95 ), we were eligible for a grant of around £2.6m from the Football Trust, which effectively paid for half the cost. I'm told that if we hadn't moved when we did, that funding would have been lost or greatly reduced.

Yes, they could be better, improvements could be made, but they are functional, do the job, and have saved us a fortune over the years !!

I’m told the chairman fought tooth and nail at the time to stop them being built. He preferred bolting seats into the existing terracing.

Isn't that what our friends down the M65 pretty much did on the Riverside Stand, Tony ??

I went to Oakwell last week and sat where they'd done just that with the ancient stand they still have there. But still not put a roof on. Imagine that on the BeeHole end.

Heck.

They're not the greatest but thank god we've got them instead of seats bolted onto terrracing. :o

I’m not sure but there are a number of clubs who did that including the one we are visiting tomorrow night.

I may be wrong, but the away section at Old Trafford always appears to be seats bolted onto terracing.

The front portion of the Riverside stand, which isn’t covered by the roof incidentally, is the original terracing. From about the 10th row back is metalwork only as the intention was for it to be replaced with a larger stand when their crowds increased. It’s one of the oldest temporary stands in the country. :D

I remember the inchy interview very well. All about aiming the club towards the premier league within 5 years. It seemed like all words and a pipe dream tbh.

However, 13 years later it happened along with the great stuff since. Good to get reminders of those days to appreciate the current.
