Is This Burnley Footage?

Post by Rowls » Fri May 03, 2019 12:03 pm

Twitter account called "Crap 90s Football"

https://twitter.com/Crap90sFootball/sta ... 7735522304" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I think it might be us with the awful defending.

Certainly looks like our mid-90s yellow away kit and the goalkeeper looks just like Marlon Beresford.

Think it could be our loss (3-0 ?) away at Shrewsbury, maybe around 1996? I think Gerry Harrison got sent off for handling on the line?

Can you identify anything that would help?

Ahhhhh - it's tagged as being Burnley in the tweet! :D

The sad, dying days of Sir Jimmy Mullen's reign.

I was there. I think I'm just out of shot in that "crowd" scene behind the goal.

But can we identify the other players?

I was there that day too. I seem to remember the referee was Scott Mathieson from Stockport.Looks like Vinnicombe is the No.3

Yep.

Vinnicombe no 3
Marlon in goal.

Not sure the no.11?

Could be Aidy Randall or Kurt Nogan judging by the grainy footage.

B.Rovers beat Notts Forest 7-0 on the same day.

Dark days indeed.

Looks like Randall in the no.11 shirt.
Was this the game where Gerry Harrison was send off for handball fairly early on?

That Twitter account is brilliant, especially the bit about the Rumbelows Sprint Challenge. Don’t remember this at all. Who did Burnley enter? John Francis maybe?

A glimpse on this old, forgotten website shows our no.11 could be someone called Paul McDonald who I have no recollection of:

http://www.uptheclarets.com/messageboar ... 46#p999246" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

However, looks like Aidy Randall and although the programme for the Shrewsbury game doesn't have a teamsheet, Randall has the no.11 shirt for the next game.

Certainly looks like the spaceman.

3 looks like its Chris Vinnicombe
First header looks like its won by Jamie Hoyland
11 should be David Eyres but somehow his running gait looks wrong?! Could be Paul McDonald
4 Mark Winstanley at a guess

5 looks like he's coming across from full back but its not Parky or Chris Brass - could be Charlie Bishop? However if we were playing 3 centre backs that day it doesn't look like Pender or Swanny to me either?!

EDIT apparently Eyres wore 9 for some of that season who knew?!

And to think a) we see some player ratings saying things like ‘it must be up there with the worst ever performance in a Burnley shirt, and b) we were far worse than this only a handful of years earlier.

You will be able to tell if its Marlon in goal by the three rolls after the dive in vain to get remotely near the ball. Prime examples of this - Plymouth away in the play offs and Stockport at Wembley.

I watched footage of Burnley v Sheff Utd, the 4-2 win from 1994 and realized that I have the actual shirt that Marlon is wearing in my drawer at home.....

Ha ha I thought stuff like this was all pre-internet.

Like for Rowls for posting and a shudder from me.

Attached is the match report, it was the game with the Gerry Harrison handball, but what was Super (everybody was super then, super Johnny Francis) Aidy Randall doing, great tracking back, then fannying about in the box, probably sums us up that year.

With us playing away, I went to Deadwood to hopefully watch Forest beat them, sat in the away end, disastrous decision.

I was there and as mentioned Harrison was sent off early on for deliberate hand ball on the line. After that it was all a foregone conclusion. Thank God trips to the likes of Shrewsbury (to get well, truly and very easily beaten) are a thing of the past...........for now!!!!
