Jimmy Glass : The Great Escape

Post by Jase_H » Sun May 05, 2019 10:57 am

Highly recommend watching this on Sky / catch-up if you have a spare half hour.

20 years on from the goal he scored in injury time, with almost the last kick, on the last day of the season, to keep Carlisle in the Football League (bearing in mind he was the goalkeeper). The goal sent Scarborough down, whose fans thought they'd survived, but the Carlisle game was still going and finished 5 mins later than theirs.

Contributions from Jimmy Glass himself, Nigel Pearson (the Carlisle manager on that day), David Brightwell (Carlisle captain), and the Carlisle Stadium announcer. Also contribution from Eddie Howe, who now employs him as Player Liaison Officer at Bournemouth.

Great story, particularly as he didn't have a great career, and faced some struggles after that day as things went downhill for him from there, and nice to see things working out for him now.

Reminds us why we love football so much, and still cherish those players who pulled together 32 years ago against Orient to produce one last result when it mattered.

His nose was broken in the melee after the goal.

Ex-Claret too. Thanks for pointing it out Jase_H, I’ve just downloaded it.

And didn't Carlisle get rid of him as a result of the injury (or have I made that up!)

I think his loan had ended.

He was only on loan from Swindon. They then tried to sign him but he wanted too much money.

On loan in '96 but didn't play in a league game. According to Wikipedia.

Yes, Jimmy Mullen brought him in on loan from Palace (I think). He sat on the bench but didn't play. Marlon Beresford missed quite a few matches with Wayne Russell playing and we needed a sub goalkeeper.

The only occasion I can actually recall him playing on the Turf was in a 2-2 draw against Bournemouth. That was the day Chris Waddle scored his only Burnley goal and Eddie Howe scored his first ever goal.

Watched the programme now - interesting watch.
