Realistic transfer expectations

From a consensus of threads on here fans are looking for a RB (although Bardsley could well be offered another year), LB (although we could take up the option to offer Ward another year), CM (even if "sicknote" Defour comes back, again), Wide man and Striker (that's hoping we don't give Crouch another contract)
From a recent Dyche interview, in the Burnley Express, he was playing down expectations that we could be in the market to sign up to 5 players despite our record profits - finances still tight he says.
Newspaper links have named players such as Bogle, Bowen, Lolly, Adams and Murphy but can we really expect to get "known" young players such as these. If available, there will, no doubt, be other Prem clubs interested and that would likely suggest we would be blown out of the water in terms of transfer fees and wages.
I struggle to get that some of the "happy clappers" think we need little change to the squad given our form in the second half of the season - especially if we are looking to the future rather than standing still
We didn't improve the starting eleven last season and, most likely will finish in the bottom six. Not that I expected any more, but if we stand still next year we are going to be looking above us for most teams in the table whilst trying to avoid the drop
The three "squad" players brought in last year cost around £30m plus wages
Whilst I would hope the new transfer fee budget would be at least (if not more) than last year's £30m, we will not be getting in 5 players such as those listed above as we simply can't afford them
With the exception of Murphy, the other guys were bought by their current clubs for a lot less money than their current value and hopefully Mr Rigg will be looking for us to do the same this summer if finances are as tight as SD suggests

Jarrod Bowen - Hull. Yes I think we could get him.

Reece James on loan for the Right Back spot

We need a solid, tackling midfielder. As we still aren't in the European market we need to find one from the teams that went down, or the teams that miss out on promotion.
He has to be a starter, not a bench warmer.
We need a pacier winger to provide more threat going forward.

IF we can get the right players, we can perhaps mix it up more, and use Matej Vydra more.

A lot of ifs and buts

If Cork starts the majority of games next season in a 2 man cm, then we are likely to have a disappointing season. If we only sign 1 player for the starting 11, it has to be Mooy or similar.

I'm not reading the OP. Needs editing and splitting up.

But going off the topic title we need a central midfielder first and foremost. They need pace and good technique. Someone who can get us moving forward at a quicker speed.

I'd prioritise good technique and possibly height above pace in the centre of the park. We effectively play with two holding midfielders so we don't need huge pace in there.

We need foremost to improve our ball retention under pressure. We can add more pace in other areas - notably out wide in midfield or defence and/or up front.

Assuming we don't sell McNeil or any of our defence then right wing, midfield and attack is where we need to improve so realistically 3 decent signings is what I'd expect.

I really can't see us bringing overseas players in so Roofe, Murphy, Bowen, Adams, Mooy, Lolley, Brownhill are probably realistic expectations.

Buendia from Norwich.
They only have 20 million to spend and the biggest weak link in their team is goalkeeper.
We have a spare one of those, so a trade for the creative midfield player that we don't have would be a bit of a win win. I'd expect that we'd have to pay some cash too.

Agree we need to really improve our ball retention next season, and so a central midfielder would seem like the priority addition. Someone like Kalvin Phillips if Leeds don't go up would make sense. Or Marko Grujic on loan at Hertha Berlin from Liverpool.

I do, however, struggle to imagine how any midfielder we could realistically sign could improve us to any significant degree though. A PL side playing with just two (holding) midfielders are always going to be pressed relentlessly, and as a result the ball will always be turned over far more easily than we'd like.

It was a good move from Dyche to go 'back to basics' for the second half of the season, but my preference would be a 3 man midfield, and an emphasis on keeping the ball and moving around into space, which will mean sacrificing the two up top.

Would like to see us go in for Bowen, would add goals to the side and he’s at a good age.

Wouldn’t be surprised to hear Adams, Maupay, And Joe Allen’s names mentioned this summer.

One I would like to see us in for is Etebo at Stoke 23 years old Nigerian international midfielder.

I think we'd need more pace with the lone striker, if we were going to revert to 4-5-1. I can't see SD going back to that unless we had someone like Che Adams. And it's one reason why we need a better central midfielder, so 4-5-1 isn't needed.

Right wing back, left wing back, central midfield option - that would do nicely

Sounds realistic in terms of scope .
I don't think we'll be in for a striker with Barnes & Wood hitting double figures. Could even see us recalling Nakki to fill the squad spot left by Crouch. Saves the club a transfer for a 4th place forward.

RB & LB are positions I think we should have an eye on sooner rather than later. Get some younger prospects in to train in the background ready to step up when the older lads move on.

We need at least two midfield players. I am assuming that Defour will not give us a full season even if he does come back. Cant' have enough in midfield. A holding player and a creative one would be just the job.

I think the performance of both a Wood and Barnes against Everton suggests that we definitely need a new striker to improve the first team regardless of the goals they’ve scored

Nowt like using a single game to write off our strikers!

What about the other games since boxing day when they have one of the best goals to games ratio in the Prem?

Would love Joe Allen in midfield, Bowen out wide, Bogle at fullback and Che Evans up top.

I was at Hillsborough yesterday - Notts Jnr was on at halftime - and saw one of the worst games of football ever. Although QPR did have one decent player who ended up missing a pen, called Eze. Never heard of him, only 20, fairly quick talented winger, beat people for fun all afternoon. Not sure he'd work for us but looks a good prospect, maybe for Palace who always seem to have loads of that type of player.

Steve Bruce has a hell of a job on there, Wednesday had nobody who looked even half decent. Although he released 6 yesterday after the game (inc. Jones and Boyd) so I guess he knows it too.

Never once did I right Barnes and Wood off, and I for one was screaming for us to go back to 4-4-2 with these two up top earlier in the season. However our lack of a different striker in that game was plain to see. So when they aren’t having their best day, a different option is needed - do you not agree?
Crouch should be released and Vydra is more of a number 10 and hasn’t been used much so again...no I haven’t written them off , you’ve just taken it out of context I’m afraid

A realistic target is 30 year old CM Jonathan Hogg. Ratty midfielder who breaks it up and has worked with Dyche at Watford. Not one to get the pulse racing but would do a job as a squad player. Would rather have Billing but I have been disappointed in previous transfer windows so I have revised my expectations.

UTC!

How about Timothy Fosu-Mensa (permanent or loan). Right age, right size, defensive midfield or full-back.

We need to invest in midfield and we need to add some really quality here. Depends who leaves but we also need a striker with pace and a right back.

Aron Mooy from Huddersfield would be a definite choice, their best player by a street, and would fit straight in to our team, he has a brain for football,i like Babel from Fulham but his wages would be too high, Che Evans will cost too much but would be a good but PL unproven.

How many games did you see him play? Every dog has his (bad) day and there was a lot of negatives said about Ben Mee’s poor form during the early part of this season.

A lot of 21 years old sometimes are, but Dyche would do a Trippier on him. He was also officially the fastest player in the Premier league.

Isn't he on loan from Man U?
Saw a few on TV earlier in the season. Very unimpressed. Didn't Ranieri try to offload him back to Old Trafford in Jan? Wages will be a bit pricey too I reckon!

Harper at WBA. I've seen him a few times and like the look of him. A player for the future.

Bogle from Derby would be a great buy. Watched him a bit since getting linked and hes a top full back.

Wilson/Mount from Derby. Both loans. Mount probably better than Cork now if perfectly honest.

Kent from Rangers/Liverpool would be a shrewd purchase too.

Westwood has done very, very well this season, but he desperately needs some real quality alongside him because he isn't THAT good. Cork was an excellent signing at the time, but he's become very, very slow in thought and action and if Defour is never going to be back to partner Westwood then I'd be seriously trying to get Mooy from Udders. He'd be a realistic target imo.

Anyone (or two, preferably three) who can improve our first eleven.
That's hopefully a realistic expectation if not a bare minimum.

Certainly one midfielder (in the Maddison mould), a forward and possibly
a decent winger.

Without doubt we need to strengthen our midfield. I think we need someone with big hair. Arsenal have got Guendouz, Leicester have Choudhury, Chelsea have Ampadu and Man Ure have now got the very impressive looking Chong. Its a now brainer for me.

Tavernier and Kent played well for Rangers this year
Southampton and Brighton linked with Tavernier and Liverpool seem to be happy to put ridiculously inflated prices on their youngsters
Kent and Harry Wilson will be in high demand this summer

I’ve mentioned on another thread if we could get a season out of Jon Obi-Mikel he would be perfect in our midfield.
Re: earlier comments on Vydra. He has looked sharp his last few, brief, appearances and should have had a pen t’other night. I think he’ll probably leave for more game time but it has been a waste.
