Lancs FA youth Cup early 90's ... John Mullin etc
I'm sure my memory's not playing tricks ... didn't we play our friends from down the M65 in a semi final (?) at the Turf around this time and around 9,000 turned up ? I have in my head a 5-0 win ...can someone place this game to a date ??

When it was a first team pre-season tournament we played them quite a bit. In the late 80’s there were a couple of games with around 8-9,000 on, when our normal league gates were closer to 6,000. Like us getting 30,000 on now I suppose.
We drew 1-1 in 1991 with Mike Conroy getting our equaliser.

As a point of note, until about 1974 it was actually a normal season first team competition. Blackburn Rovers got their lowest ever crowd when they played Rochdale in 1970 of five hundred and sixty one (561).

Remember the game sat in the cricket field stand. Also remember the teams came out separately the young Rovers got a warm welcome! No idea on the date.Clarets4me wrote:I'm sure my memory's not playing tricks ... didn't we play our friends from down the M65 in a semi final (?) at the Turf around this time and around 9,000 turned up ? I remember this.....around 94 I think. We had a really good youth team around then! Mullin was the standout but I seem to remember two decent wingers too.Clarets4me wrote:I'm sure my memory's not playing tricks ... didn't we play our friends from down the M65 in a semi final (?) at the Turf around this time and around 9,000 turned up ? Andy Oakes went on to have a decent career, John Mullin famously scored a winner for Sunderland v Manchester United and Paul Smith went on to play for our 1st team ..... I seem to remember that Bannister was a tall, strong, red haired lad who scored 2 or 3 in that game. None of that Rovers line-up rings any bells in terms of a professional career, although I may be wrong ....

I sat in the Bob Lotd for this. I seem to temper Rovers playing in black and red. We beat them 5-0 and we played Utd in the final?Clarets4me wrote:I'm sure my memory's not playing tricks ... didn't we play our friends from down the M65 in a semi final (?) at the Turf around this time and around 9,000 turned up ? Memory not as good as it was

I used to work with Phil Eastwood he was a massive Rovers fan despite having been at BFC.

Heffernan and Borland went on to play for Rossy Utd! Ian Duerden started one game under Waddle I think.

I remember a Yourh cup game, which I thought was that one, where the announced crowd was 5,400 and something. Away fans (Rovers?) in the Cricket Field stand, and I had to move to the Bob Lord for that game as the CFS was away fans only.
Didn’t we play Man United Youth around a similar time and the crowd was around 9,000?
Memory a bit faded.

The semi-final win referred to in 1995: we played Man City at Maine Road in the final and won 1-0 with an Eastwood goal. I think most people were stunned when Mullen released Andy Oakes after that game. He did go on to play just over 100 league games in his career. I think he played against us just once for Derby and was substituted in the second half with a young Lee Grant coming on for his debut.

Good description of Andrew Bannister. I played in the same Barrowford Celtic team as him and he was a smashing lad who was horrible to play against. I played against him once when he was playing for Pendle town team and I was in the Burnley side. He tore me a new one and we got thumped 4-1.Clarets4me wrote:Andy Oakes went on to have a decent career, John Mullin famously scored a winner for Sunderland v Manchester United and Paul Smith went on to play for our 1st team ..... Looking at the teamsheets, I'd forgotten that Nicky Allen was on Burnley's books too. If I recall correctly, he played for Hyndburn Academicals and was another one who tied me in knots. Anyone know what happened to him?

I sat in the CF end for the game. There were no away fans allowed.Claretforever wrote:I remember a Yourh cup game, which I thought was that one, where the announced crowd was 5,400 and something. I was at school with Nicky Allen, went to see him play for Burnley when we played a youth game against some of the 'Class of 92'. Looked alright against them too. Far and away the best player at school but fair to say his subsequent lifestyle wasn't always conducive to pro-football. He was a good lad though and back on track now the last I heard.Sausage wrote:Looking at the teamsheets, I'd forgotten that Nicky Allen was on Burnley's books too. That’s right. You’ve reminded me now, but I was in the Bob Lord. The crowd was about 5,400 though, I’m quite sure.Quickenthetempo wrote:I sat in the CF end for the game. There were no away fans allowed.
9,000 v Man United?
