And he got a round of applause. Fair play. Great to see.

Apparently, according to the clubs twitter feed, he got a “standing ovation” - and rightly so imo

I just questioned who that was next to Beast. My brother reckons Steve Jones did he even play that season!?

That is great to hear. Many of us would have made a mistake in our careers and not been totally honest with current employers if looking at other opportunities - but Coyle was such a lightning rod for the club. It’s a shame so many supporters still act like pathetic jilted lovers.

No, and only started one game for Coyle which was in the previous January.

I suspect the people attending this bash aren’t representative of the fanbase as a whole and I can imagine the type. Whilst it was still fairly raw that night he returned with Bolton was the worse hostility I’ve ever seen towards any former player or manager. There is still a lot of ill feeling towards him and not just from our club. He reeped what he sowed.

Why wouldn’t they be representative?

It’s a night to celebrate one of our finest seasons. The architect of that should be applauded despite what happened later.

Ten years ago if you are still hung up on it now you can’t have many other worries in life.

Some people value respect, integrity, honesty and not deception and lies. It’s all the righteousness bull that he preached before this too that riled people. It also turned out to be a flash in the pan that fizzled out at Ross County where he also failed. He also clearly exaggerated his ability to other employers and to take on the Blackburn job was a bit pathetic.

As for Coyle. Its ten years now. The clubs and his career are miles apart. But that in part is thanks to him.

I was fuming at the time. But time moves on.

Perhaps after ten years we can all move on and thank him now. We are far better off on and off the field. Part of thats because he took us up. And part of that may even be how he left us. We matured as a club after that.

We are far better off with Dyche. But without Coyle we would probably not have had Dyche. Everything for a reason...

Wow, it’s only a game.

Sure, I’ll boo him from the stands like a pantomime villain, but if I was at a formal event or if I bumped into him in the streets I’d treat him with respect.

Spot on. It was obvious Coyle had so many limitations as a manager and now he’s a busted flush. No way could he do what Dyche has done. But what an amazing journey I can’t be angry 10 years with such happy memories of that time.

Not ‘hung up’ on it and also ‘grown up’. Just posting my view as it’s a thread about a do involving that season and Coyle.i spend little time thinking about it. Posting that it’s so wonderful that he’s shown his face is just wet.

I asked a question (they gave us Q and A cards to submit) prior to knowing Owen was here, asking Steve Caldwell:

“What was the feeling in the dressing room when news came of Coyle having left, and do you feel we would have stayed up if he had stayed?”

Will be interesting to see if it’s read out now!

Didnt mind him leaving for what seemed like a better opportunity, probably most of us have done it.

The way he torpedoed our club by taking our staff and pending transfers was what hurt. He made sure one relegation place was filled with that stunt.

That said, he gave us great football, a brilliant cup run and a day at Wembley with my dad that I’ll never forget.

He could have been a legend but for me he’s just another page in the story of BFC, like Gray or Austin. Someone who helped us on the climb upwards.

Applause? Nah. Anything derogatory, equally so. Just meh.

But ten years later?

I was gutted when he left. Absolutely gutted, but you know what, he did is a favour.

His Burnley time was built on his ability of the big pre game team talk, his short term motivation of players. If he had stayed, we probably would of gone down and given him a few more seasons to get us back there.

How could anyone not think that he would deserve the long term chance. We reached the promised land once and it felt like a miracle. We all would of accepted that as a one off dream.

Leaving allowed us to grow as a club.

I think him for an amazing couple of seasons

Did he though? We appointed an absolute joke of a manager and still would have stayed up with a reverse of the Wigan result.
He left us in a great position. We blew it.

“I’m moving to the club with the best chance of staying up”

I may be paraphrasing but essentially in addition to the above, he told our squad they weren’t good enough. That’s before he tapped up Eagles and Blake for a gig at his new place.

Anyway. It ended well for us and him so no harm done.

It did end well. The Bolton away (apart from the actual game) and home cup tie were great fun.
He deserved the stick for the way he left but I can’t agree he relegated us.

If anyone has the picture of the away bench, with the supporter sat behind in the BL with the Judas sign, that would be marvellous about now.

I like to think if Coyle hadn't gone when he did did, we'd never have got Laws, who then wouldn't have gone at the perfect time for Eddie to come in and then for Dyche, at another perfect time, to come in when Eddie abruptly left.
Part of me thinks we could've been a struggling league one club now, with the portacabins rotting away down at Gawthorpe, if it wasn't for Bolton and Owen doing the dirty. No hard feelings Owen, time's a healer and a giver of perspective and what ifs.
