Crete Transfers

Post by Eyres_11 » Tue May 14, 2019 5:18 pm

Hi All! I know that theres a few of you on here who travel and wouldn't mind some advice.

Have booked to stay near Heraklion, Crete next month but we are landing in Chania (8pm) - Don't really want to do a taxi as its looking at upwards of £180+.

Wondered if anyone had done this before or had any ideas what the best way to go about it would be ?

TIA

Hired a car in Crete when I was there with my dad few years ago. Was quite cheap (cheaper than £180 definitely) and as Crete isn’t really HUGE, it wouldn’t be a bad drive if you’re there hat way inclined.

Should have said, sorry. I'm not a great flyer so driving at that end is out as I will be having a drink. Other traveler doesn't drive.

Have you tried travel hopper or similar?

https://www.crete.cab/book.php?START=4& ... EWAY&ST=1#

These lot would save you a bit on the taxi then.

Looking around £130

The busses run til 9pm (I might be wrong but that’s after a quick dig) I think so wouldn’t give you time to get out/get tickets and get the bus unless you leg it.

Also, it’s always worth dropping an email/WhatsApp to the hotel you’re going to as they can sometimes arrange something for you. Did this in Krakow a few months ago and the person who ran the apartments we used came and picked us up from the airport and took us straight there for less than the taxi would have cost.

Is there a reason you didn't fly direct into Heraklion?

Its a fair way from Heraklion to Chania... around an hour 45 mins ish... take it there is no way you can change your flight to Heraklion instead?
If you arrive late at night prob best looking for somewhere v. cheap to stay and catching the bus to Heraklio / Hersonnisos the next day.

Crete is quite large for a Greek Island and it probably would have been better to fly straight into Heraklion. Not sure Heraklion itself is a great city break but it may have improved since I was last there. Great island though.

Yes...I've done this loads of times .The bus services on Crete are terrific .You'll easily get a hotel for the night in Chania then the following morning get the bus to Heraklion bus station and change there for wherever you are going...I've done it to Heraklion then on to Hersonissos , stalis ,Mahlia and agios Nikolaos. The timetables are easy to find on the internet .Costs buttons and all your cases will be stowed in the luggage compartment .Good quality coaches too.

Is it your first time in Crete, because your travel plan is similar to someone wanting to stay in Manchester and booking a flight to Gatwick.
Definitely stay over and get the bus. The service is cheap and efficient.
If you are only staying a few days and that eats into your holiday then taxi it is.

If you haven't been to Greece before it's probably better to book a hotel near the airport for the night.
Going back 30yrs but the first time we went we landed in the early hours, the bins were out everywhere ready for collection and the place stunk.
The whole family wanted to go home at that point, but the following morning it was totally different and a great place to visit.

We vowed never to arrive on late flights anymore.

I've just checked K-Tel Crete and the buses to Heraklion from Chania ( calling at Rethimnon ) are every hour from 6.30 am onwards and it takes about 2 and a half hours .15 euros .Its a long way but you'll see a lot of Crete and the taxi fare would be bloody expensive if you did it that way .Loads of buses from Heraklion heading East .

Hitchhiked all round Crete in 1991. Plenty of nutters picked me up. Chania was quite charming then if it’s not changed I’d stay there

Thanks everyone!

Was more of a mistake , not properly checking the bloody airports, only been to other Greek islands which are obviously small. Only a few days there so wanting to get to hotel the same night.

I've just checked K-Tel Crete and the buses to Heraklion from Chania ( calling at Rethimnon ) are every hour from 6.30 am onwards and it takes about 2 and a half hours .15 euro

Thanks for that FC, had a look at their website and bus to Heraklion leaves Chania at 21.45 - so that could look like a good option then a taxi to Heronissos.

Good to know the coaches are decent though, better than Rovers away
