Re: Tommy Robinson Tuesday
Tommy Robinson or whatever name he's using doesn't give a fig about the people of Burnley or anywhere else in the UK,he exploits people's fears and preys on them, thankfully the public aren't so gullible to fall for his gutter politics, and that's why he didn't come anywhere near becoming an MEP,now he's been soundly rejected at the ballot box his true colours are coming to fruition and it's not a pretty sight.
I don't actually believe he's thick,so he must have wilfully flouted the reporting restrictions in place during the trial, clearly he believes he's above the law, well Tommy you aren't and are now likely to face a prison sentence,i've no doubt all the sob stories will bring the donations flooding in once again.
It's strange that Tommy only highlights the Asian perpetrators of these vile crimes, you'd almost think he had an agenda, now what could that possibly be i wonder.

I walk past the Old Bailey every day on the way to work. 10 mini buses full of coppers on stand by both days. Plus others in the vicinity.
Such a waste of resources when the police are stretched so thin.

Edit: Oh. Apparently he's in prison now. That's nice.

I hear you. So if i can make prosecuting me for the crimes i commit to be really expensive then I should be allowed to get away with my crimes? What if i'm a muslim in a grooming gang, will that idea of yours hold then?

The current charge is for contempt of court - which in law is just about as serious as it gets. Ensuring the integrity, security and safety of our judicial process ensures that in most cases everyone gets a fair trial and justice takes its course.Quickenthetempo wrote:Do you think such cost would be allowed if you or I where the ones prosecuted?

"Tommy" very nearly cost the courts system much more than that. As a result of his actions multiple defendants in that case applied to have the jury dismissed (and some the case).Quickenthetempo wrote:Just read somewhere they have spent millions prosecuting Tommy. If he was allowed to continue as he was doing with no repercussions then that would have happened at some point together with the huge associated costs. There was also a pretty good chance that at some point someone guilty of being involved in a grooming gang would have been released on a technicality due to "Tommy" but we all know that he doesn't really care about that.
Plus of course, choosing not to prosecute someone as it costs too much is a pretty bad idea. Do you know how much criminal investigations cost? They're not cheap.

But I can't ever recall another contempt of court case of this scale, never mind cost.
I do wish the legal system would get rid of them technicalities/loopholes. But I guess the Lawyers would never let that happen.

If we allow juries to be compromised the way Robinson was trying to compromise that jury then we would very quickly have trials being litigated in the media and not in the courts. Juries would be allowed to read lies in the press and base decisions on what they read as if it was true. Is that what you want?
I don't think you understand how important it is for juries not to have access to misinformation about the trials they're deciding. We simply wouldn't have a justice system any more. It would be a system where the wider public gets to decide the guilt or innocence of someone based on what will sell more newspapers.

Re: Tommy Robinson Tuesday
Exactly. And it should be taken seriously because it is incredibly, and deceptively, serious. If even a single time someone is allowed to demonstrate contempt of court by violating a court's instruction without consequences then that sets a precedent that can destroy a justice system. Anything that can cause injury to a justice system is among the most serious crimes that can be committed against a democracy like ours because it is an attack on a fundamental right we all have, the right to a fair trials. And if one person is allowed to ignore a court order because enforcing it would just be too expensive (to use QTT's objection), then justice becomes dependant on how expensive we can make the fairness of a trial.aggi wrote:It's one of those things that get taken very seriously. This one stuck in my mind https://www.theguardian.com/law/2012/ja ... e-research" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I wonder if QTT has imagined a scenario where instead of it being Tommy Robinson who was putting the fairness of the trial at risk but instead it was the friends and family members of the defendants in an attempt to cause a mistrial. Would the contempt trials that result in that scenario be too expensive, if they were equally as expensive as the Tommy trial? Because that's basically what would inevitably happen if we allowed contempt of court to be only enforced dependent on a budget.

That said, i'm pretty sure if Tommy's not in custody already then he will be soon because i don't think that after you've been convicted of a crime for which you will go to prison when you're sentenced, making a video declaring yourself a flight risk is a particularly bright idea.

I'd welcome it. Anyway, didn't he enter the US illegally by using someone else's passport because he had previously been refused entry? That's quite a serious matter in any country, but especially so the US. Can't see Trump or anyone else getting the red carpet out for him, though you never know. Hope dies last or so they say.AndyClaret wrote:It would be hilarious if Trump granted him asylum, the meltdown by some on here would be epic !

Re: Tommy Robinson Tuesday
Blimey. How many names does our saviour have? I know he was charged with contempt of court under the name of Stephen Yaxley-Lennon. I know he stood in the Euro elections as Tommy Robinson. Now maybe this is old news to some of you, but today I find out that he's used yet another name of Paul Harris.
Lennon had previously been refused entry to the US and used a friend's passport to travel to the country in September.
He used a self check-in kiosk to board the flight at Heathrow and was allowed through when the document was checked in the bag-drop area.
But when Lennon arrived at New York's JFK Airport, customs officials took his fingerprints and realised he was not travelling on his own passport.
Lennon was asked to attend a second interview but managed to leave the airport, entering the US illegally.
He stayed one night and travelled back to the UK the following day using his own legitimate passport, which bears the name of Paul Harris.

Why would there be any meltdown?AndyClaret wrote:It would be hilarious if Trump granted him asylum, the meltdown by some on here would be epic !
The only people who would miss him would be his small band of small-minded supporters, and to the majority on here who hold the same view of Trump as the UK Ambassador, (and who have a similar view of Robinson), it would indeed be hilarious. I just hope that Trump comes through for him.
Re: Tommy Robinson Tuesday
Tommy's claims that he was just reporting on the case like any other journalist don't seem too convincing:
At another point, the respondent incited viewers to harass the criminal defendants.
The words relied on are:-
“You want to harass someone’s family? You see that man who was getting aggressive as he walked into court, the man who faces charges of child abduction, rape, prostitution – harass him, find him, go knock on his door, follow him, see where he works, see what he’s doing. You want to stick pictures online and call people and slander people, how about you do it about them?”
