As mentioned I cannot see the benefits of having a sub pro week in week out, too much hassle and time sorting it out. Then you could get a player who isn't too bothered as its not their club. Not all are like this, Brett Pelser subbed for my former club greenmount, took 9 wickets and by all accounts was a good all round bloke.

Other sub pro stories, Joel Garner played for greenmount in the 70s and someone picked him up in a mini! He got 9 wickets too.

Murray Bennett, Australian left arm test spinner, pro at Ramsbottom in the 80s. Played in a cup final, he was bowling second defending 160 odd. He was immaculate and bowled 24.5 overs for very little with a few wickets. Kearsley need 6 to win off the last with Murray bowling at their no. 8 who hit the final ball for 6!

Another Bolton league club had engaged terry hunte as sub pro and they were to pick him up at a meeting point in Burnley. They couldn't find him as they were driving round looking for a white South African lad!

The talk about substitute professionals reminded me of when I was 14 years old and became the scorer for CHurcg in Chester Watson's first season. He took 5 for 15 at Bacup, followed by 1 wicket v Lowerhouse in an abandoned game and then took 6 for 5 at Nelson off 9 overs. Nelson scored 51 and then dismissed Church for 50 with Johnny Wardle taking 5 wickets!
Chester was then injured in a car crash and, apart from 1 match when he tried to come back, he was out for the rest of the season.
The main substitute pro was Malcolm Hilton who was then a Lancashire player and who became professional at Burnley in 1962. The other substitutes were Garfield Sobers, who scored 43 and took 8 wickets and one of the best catches I have ever seen, Frank Worrell who scored 105 not out, Stan Jayasinghe (2 matches), Clarmont Depeiza (2 matches), Reg Scarlett and Cecil Wright.
In addition they played against Todmorden and Rawtenstall without a professional.

Needless to say, Church finished next to bottom with a Wes Hall inspired Accrington winning the league.

Chester was fully fit the following season and took 119 wickets in a season when Church won the league ---they have only won the Worsley Cup since then!

An interesting piece that Ashington, Clairmont Depeiza coached me and the under 15s at Heywood Grammar school in 1960 and when I moved to Newcastle in 1977 I was amazed to find him still playing somewhere in the Durham league. West Indies wicket keeper but fast bowler in the leagues.

I played in Rohan Kanhai's benefit match at Blackpool in 1962 when I went along with Chester to be the scorer but ended up playing bcause somebody didn't turn up. I remember Depeiza having one big row with Roy Gilchrist in the dressing room which was all a bit frightening for a 15 year old 'rookie'
Fortunately, it all got sorted before we went on the field but there was an atmosphere between the two for the whole afternoon.

Yes 2 fiery types there but Gilchrist was as mad as a hatter.
Depeiza smashed a coffee table with his bat at Littleboro, unfortunately it was the main raffle prize!

I had to laugh at the coffee table breakage and I certainly wouldn't argue about Gilchrist!

Dont think Depeiza was far behind Gilchrist in the mad as a hatter stakes! My 1st team career at Littleborough started in 1971 so (luckily) I missed them both in their prime.

The new format in the Lancs League really is working.

Competitive cricket for all clubs and the likes of Colne and Rawtenstall getting to win games and enjoy some success.

I think the top division is likely as strong as anything in the County.

Another defeat for a much weakened Burnley side at Woodhouses CC in the LCB Trophy. Burnley 109 all out, Woodhouses knocked them off for 3 wickets. Lovely little ground though and a new one for me.

Padiham got knocked out of the LCB trophy by Bradshaw.

A lovely ground with Matt Lowtons house backing on to it. (According to the locals, him and Tarky are frequent visitors there)
