Is women’s football winning you over?

Post by claptrappers_union » Sat May 18, 2019 1:33 pm

Just watching Football Focus, they’ve been plugging the upcoming World Cup with a player who plays in Lyon and that Alex Scott contributing pitchside. They then showed some fancy graphic with the Scotland squad... and I’m watching all this thinking, I don’t care.

They might as well be talking about some U16’s tournament...

Jeez, Lewis Capadi is singing about Scotland ladies now...

Anyone genuinely interested in the ladies game?

Edit: just switched over to Road Wars and Sky One

It's certainly good to see the ladies Burnley FC team doing well and they certainly deserved their lap of honour before the game on Sunday.

I’m not having a go, it’s just that the coverage has intensified over the past 2 years, but I’m still not interested.

That said, in regards to the Burnley Ladies, I didn't even know we had a proper team to be fair until last week. I wasn't sure what League they’ve even won. I don’t know what the quality of the league is or anything

The more that they try to push it onto me in an attempt to be politically correct, the more I will ignore it.

I quite enjoy watching women's cricket on Sky, but I do find watching women's football hard work.

No. The BBC are pushing it though. They don’t even differentiate on the headlines anymore. ‘Arsenal have just signed Jane something or other’ why not just state ‘now moving onto women’s football ...’

Can I just clarify it’s not a sexism thing, i’m all up for developing the women’s game. But with all the marketing, exposure and coverage... I’m still no more interested than I was in, say 2001.

I tried to sit through the Fa Cup Final a few weeks ago and I switched over to another channel. You could tell that there literally no-one there on their own accord. The attendance was made up players families, club officials, sponsors and schools and sports clubs. No-one was watching the game either.

Everyone cheered like mad when someone put the ball in the net after being flagged offside, it was well offside - but the crowd didn’t know.

I’m not one to have a pop at the quality of football, (I’m a Burnley fan) but I managed to sit through the turgid Pompey v Sunderland game the other night, but I can’t watch women’s football for more than 15 mins for some reason.

The main issue for me is the quality of keeping. It really is appalling. Pretty much whenever you see a game there is always at least one should’ve done much better moment from a keeper.

i don't think it's necessarily a politically correct thing by the beeb, at least not totally.

i think it's more down to the fact that their sporting output has dwindled over the years as sky et al have nicked all the good stuff.

just look at the way they promote the dullfests that are the london marathon and the boat race.

they have to big-up the dregs they've been left with.

I think it's fine at international level, some good play but goalkeepers tend to be poor in comparison. At league level the big clubs are too dominant so nothing new there.

To be fair to the U16s, the ladies wouldn't qualify for their tournament.

Since moving to Lincoln 7 years ago have enjoyed watching Ladies soccer by watching Lincoln Ladies who then were in the Premiership league and captained by Casey Stoney at both Lincoln United and Sincil Bank.
When they moved the team to Notts County I have not seen any games live but watch matches on TV when I can and enjoy like I enjoy Ladies Cricket

I'm all for womens football getting as much exposure as it warrants, but in a completely separate program. So we can choose to watch it or not. It certainly does feel 'rammed down our throats' at the moment.

It's not very good, but perhaps it appeals to a largely female audience. fortunately it's not compulsory viewing.

this ignore it thing always crops up, it is a pointless way to dismiss valid criticism. People are rightfully highlighting something being foisted on the public and discussing the reasons why.

Honestly, I fail to see how it's being 'foisted on the public' any more than a televised bowls tournament.

Thing is, whenever they do try to push it they always undermine those efforts by showing a goal where it’s clearly a mishit that flies into the goal when you expect the keeper to easily save it. They then try to claim its a wonderful goal.

Have they ever considered using smaller goals in ladies football? That might make it look a bit more realistic.

You’re missing the point. I love football. It’s the only sport I take seriously. However, if there is a build up to a big boxing match, or a Snooker World Championship, Darts match, or any main sporting event like the Super Bowl, I’ll take an interest. Even if it’s fleeting and for one night only.

Women’s Football though, I’m not interested, even when it’s heavily publicised on the programmes I’m watching. Maybe because I know it’s completely overhyped.

I'm probably being a bit thick, for which I apologise, but I'm not actually sure what your point is. You don't like it/care about it, so you don't watch it. What's the issue?

there is an agenda with this, particularly with the BBC, its why advertisers spend millions on products, only the public broadcasting corporation are playing silly buggers cramming in references to this stuff at virtually every opportunity. Masses of other sports barely get a look in thesedays however hard they try.

Its cack.

I'm no more going to watch low grade minge charging aimlessly round a football pitch than I'd pay for a lap dance off Brian Jensen.

I’d just be interested in how many people are actually watching it.

If Sky Sports or the BBC actually put as much attention on something like British Wrestling, Basketball or Hockey and received the same viewing figures, I’d suspect they’d probably axe it. I know loads of football fans, but I don’t think any of them are watching women’s football.
