Help needed: England v Scotland schoolboys game
Hi everyone,
I visited the old Wembley twice. The second time was our game v Stockport in 94. Prior to that, I had gone with my primary school to watch England play Scotland in a schoolboys game.
It must’ve been 92 or 93 and I remember Scotland won after England had gone in front.
I’d love to find out who played that day and to see if any players went on to have a decent career in the game.
If anyone can point me in the right direction I’d appreciate it.
Thanks

Not able to help with that one, but I'm sure I once attended an England v Scotland schoolboy international at The Turf back in the late sixties. (Or am I mistaken?)

I went to that one - 1966 or 67? May even have been 68.Dark Cloud wrote:Not able to help with that one, but I'm sure I once attended an England v Scotland schoolboy international at The Turf back in the late sixties. (Or am I mistaken?)
It was my first visit to Turf Moor. The thing that struck me was how green the grass was. Of course, it was only grey on th telly!

I suspect, looking at the provided table (thanks for that), that it must’ve been 1991. I’m sure Scotland won the game.

I'm glad I remembered it right. We got tickets through primary school and sat in the old Brunshaw Rd stand. I was used to it tbh as my dad would take us in there for Clarets matches.Claret wrote:I went to that one - 1966 or 67? May even have been 68.

Yep - tickets via primary school. I was in the enclosure in front of you. No idea what score or the exact year.Dark Cloud wrote:I'm glad I remembered it right. Must have been early 1969 as the very last game for the old Brunshaw Road stand was against Sunderland on 23rd April 1969. We then suffered for almost five years with a three sided ground before the first game in the Bob Lord against Villa on 16th Feb. 1974.

I definitely kept the programme for the schoolboy international for many years afterwards, but eventually I lost it, or just forgot where I put it!!!Royboyclaret wrote:It was 1969 and Scotland won 2-0.

It’s definitely the 1993 match I attended. I’ve got the Scottish FA onto it. They said they’d get back to me!

Intersting that the one player who went on to have a massive career was not one of the kids signed up for the F.A. National Schoolcricketfieldclarets wrote:Didnt attend that game. But did go to the under 21s vs latvia. Ian Pearce got booed all game.

As well as Neville, I presume that the Daniel Murphy ( Chester ) is the same Danny Murphy of Spurs, England and latterly MOTD fame, another not picked up by the F.A. National School ..bfcmik wrote:Intersting that the one player who went on to have a massive career was not one of the kids signed up for the F.A. National School

Re: Help needed: England v Scotland schoolboys game
I saw a few good players play for England schoolboys:
Nicky Butt
Nicky Barmby
Michael Owen
Also a lad called Ryan Walsh who later adopted his Dad's surname and opted to play for Wales.
edit - misremembered his name which apparently was Wilson.

I've just noticed from that programme that the match ball was sponsored by BANK HALL FINANCIAL SERVISES. senior consultant John Haworth.

With help from the Scottish Schools F.A, I have obtained team information for the Scotland side who defeated England. Andy O’Brien (later of Ireland) and Paul McShane appear to be the standout names. I’ve contacted the English Schools FA, in the hope of receiving something similar.

Sorry, jd but Paul McShane was schooled in Wicklow and Andy O’Brien in Harrogate, both Rep of Ireland internationals. The Daniel Murphy is very definitely the same Danny Murphy now on Match of the Day. I was sat behind his uncle for that game who had just left Burnley - a certain Ron Futcher.Clarets4me wrote:As well as Neville, I presume that the Daniel Murphy ( Chester ) is the same Danny Murphy of Spurs, England and latterly MOTD fame, another not picked up by the F.A. The Paul McShane on that team sheet was at Rangers but emigrated and played football in Iceland. His son is Hilmar McShane who plays league football now in Iceland.Tricky Trevor wrote:Sorry, jd but Paul McShane was schooled in Wicklow and Andy O’Brien in Harrogate, both Rep of Ireland internationals. Cheers for that. Don’t know the guy but on checking the Irish Paul McShane would only have been 7 and that would be an age group record.ClaretTony wrote:The Paul McShane on that team sheet was at Rangers but emigrated and played football in Iceland. This link allows you to check previous squad lists back to 2009.
The only pro I recognise from that year is James Norwood of Tranmere

I remember the 1969 game...I think! Harry Wilson later to play for Burnley played for England. I know he went to Brighton then Preston and came back to Burnley as a coach when he finished playing but not for long. I presume he must have left football

Trevor Steven immediately comes to mind. The post above says Harry Wilson and I think from memory that Derek Scott did but can find no proof.

Re: Help needed: England v Scotland schoolboys game
If it was the the Smith's crisps international challenge cup? March 1980's then I went to help out with my school team - Chorley Duke St CP with Clive Ackary as manager, to assist him as he was quite poorly and on crutches at the time so couldn't manage all the running about. The team had the England dressing room prior to the main match and Steve Coppull shook the team's hands and mine in the line up. It was great thrill to walk out of the old Wembley tunnel. Each boy had a football to carry out and warm up with and so with me at the back, I asked the last boy in the line to drop the football he was carrying then I did a bit of a dribble and then he picked it up and I can now claim that I kicked a ball on the pitch at Wembley.
And the boy who kindly obeyed my request - that was David Unsworth who went on to have a very good career !!

Just reading Dave Roberts excellent book “32 Programmes” & no.3 is England Schools v German Schools on April 30th 1966.One D.Thomas(Bishop Auckland) scored the winner. He was also 220 yds junior sprint champion. It must be our DT surely & if so I saw his debut in my first ever Burnley league game in May 1967.Described as a tricky winger in the book…not arf!
