Channel 4 news - the go to choice for the residents of the metropolitan London Borough of Ivory Towers. ( and their provincial cousins of course!)

On referendum night before the results had come in, Paddy Ashdown made a solemn promise to the British public:
“I will forgive no one who does not respect the sovereign voice of the British people once it has spoken, whether it is a majority of one per cent or 20 per cent.
When the British people have spoken you do what they command. Either you believe in democracy or you don’t.”

Also, an interesting article on the democratic oversight of the Brexit Party https://www.newstatesman.com/politics/b ... -populists" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It appears to be very much the Nigel Farage party Its constitution holds that the leader can only be deposed by a vote of no confidence by the board that the leader himself appoints. According to Companies House, Brexit Party Limited has three officers: treasurer Phillip Basey, businessman Richard Tice and Nigel Farage. Farage is the only person who can appoint and remove directors.

Farage would be free to continue to campaign to leave the EU
Nobody is saying the losing side in the referendum should be silenced. Just that the result be implemented and respected and that they will be free to campaign to join the EU.

James O'Brien is saying that he would put his trust in a "rent-a-milkshake" sort of character, that that character will keep his secret to his grave rather than spill the beans to the press and make some cash? If he would do that, then he's far too great a fool to be a politician.

Unless I'm missing something I can't see why the EU would agree to this.
The problem is, as we both know, is that the reality isn't going to be good, but its gets less and less good the more and more "No Deal" it gets.
Everyone knows this, but no one wants to say it, especially if they have spent months telling everyone that "No Deal is better than a bad deal".

Teresa May has ignored -
The 17.4 million.
The Conservative Party.
Not one but TWO Brexit ministers.
The EU , when they actually offered her a Canada + deal which is much closer to a clean Brexit than her repackaged new EU treaty.
The Cabinet.
The Voice of Parliament, 3 times.
Her chief whips (today)
The People ( in the council elections)
The only people she did listen to was her handler, Frau Merkel. When on the eve of the "chequers weekend " She flew to Berlin to get Merkels approval. And a man she'd previously described as not being fit for office, Jeremy Corbyn! She's spent weeks listening to him!!!
You'd be forgiven for suspecting she has a barely concealed agenda of her own. And that she's nothing more than a europhile Brussels shill.

Re: YES! Farage Milkshaked
The PMs statement this afternoon has been brought up on a thread about the misuse of a milkshake. As the milkshake story is completely insignificant, I will keep my comments solely to my reaction to the statement.
Her last throw of the dice but an intriguing one indeed. It will be interesting how this one plays out after the initial outcry from the Tories and the Labour leader's initial political utterings that there is nothing that has significantly changed.
The outcry from the Tories will of course get louder each day. Meanwhile the Labour membership and deputy leader and others will be quietly wetting themselves in anticipation.
Will Labour risk it? They have to vote for the Bill first and then if they do, any referendum vote could be voted down. By then, of course it will be too late.
Certainly a significantly large number of Tory MPs will vote down the bill.
Or the irony that would be if the bill passes on the strength of the Parliamentary Labour Party and the Referendum vote is lost. Or a future Tory PM repeals any law passed.
Teresa May will in my opinion be seem by historians as the most inept PM the UK has ever seen.

Would those be the same historians as viewed Jacob Rees-Moggs latest book as being the work of a 12 year old without any real grasp of the subject matter?
She maybe the worst PM for now but a quick glance of the runners and riders suggests she may not hold the title for long.

Corbyn has already explained why it is totally unacceptable.
Even if some Labour MPs were tempted by some aspects of it, they know that May is going and they could suddenly find someone even more untrustworthy as PM, fronting trade negotiations and reneging on any arrangement etc.
Additionally of course, if TM's "deal" is thrown out again it significantly increases the chances of there being a Gen Election, which Labour is keen to have.

May has made a strong case for herself being regarded as the worst ever PM, but that accolade has to go to Cameron for causing the entire sh*tstorm and chaos we are in.kentonclaret wrote:"

It's hard to imagine even Corbyn or Johnson screwing up the country to the extent that Cameron did - (oh and of course then just walking away from it all and leaving it for others to try to sort out).
Re: YES! Farage Milkshaked
This is too simplistic. Just because we had a yes or no vote doesn’t mean the issue itself remains that way. Yes or no led to a multiplicity of brexit outcomes. We should have had this conversation before the referendum, or as a nation right afterwards - but we didn’t. And that’s not a remain fault any more than a leave one. We were all bystanders while the government tried to tie things up themselves.RingoMcCartney wrote:The lib dems, the Green Party, Change UK, tory remain and labour remain all claim -

I agree.
Its divided between those that respect democracy, and accept the result of the referendum should be implemented.
And those that do not.
Leave is complicated. Yes or no didn’t define how and where to. You can’t cut forty years of a relationship just like that. You could say: “just leave” - however even the majority of leave supporters admit this will bring the most detrimental effects of all possible leave outcomes. Even then we’ll still have the complexity to deal with, while also dealing with new complexity. Is that worth it? Asking the U.K. economy to adjust would be like asking me to do a marathon, next week.

It's mid May. It's not pantomime season.Lancasterclaret wrote:It isn't though is it?
I mean, I know you think it is, but it really isn't, and you saying it is kinda suggests that it isn't.
I'm not going to get into a oh yes it is / oh no it isn't.
The country is indeed, divided.
On one side -
Those who voted Leave and expect their ,democratically confirmed, majority, view to be implemented. Along with fair minded remain voters who respect democracy.
On the other -
And remain voters who believe the referendum result should be rerun before the 2016 result is implemented.
Why should voters who want to leave the EU have to win TWO referenda to have their viewpoint implemented.,
While Remain voters would only have to have had to win ONE ?
As someone who describes himself as a "liberal Democrat" . Can you explain what what is liberal , or democratic about that?.....
