Re: 1960 European Cup Special
A very special night in our history and one that didn't disappoint.
Almost 37,000 on the Turf to see us beat a team containing players like Kopa, Fontaine, Vincent & Piantoni. Players that had graced the World Cup a couple of years earlier were now coming to play on our patch. Also turned out to be a friendly enough affair, totally unlike the second leg in France two weeks later.

I remember that night as if it was yesterday. I had just turned 8 years of age and was like a rabbit in the headlights.
A fabulous night and a fabulous few years to be honest.

Re: 1960 European Cup Special
I think the away leg was a stormy affair.
Didn't Harry Potts walk onto the pitch and roll the ball back a few yards when they kept stealing those yards at free kicks?
Then the Gendarmerie nabbed him.

Electro, you are right, Harry actually walked about five or six yards onto to pitch, picked up the ball and threw it back about ten yards.
I was on the Turf that night against Reims: I sat in the Brunshaw Rd. Stand for the first time, because I won a free ticket in a competition set by the Telegraph. I don't remember much about the game, to be honest, but I was hoping we would play Real Madrid at some stage in the competition.

For anybody with access to “When We Were Kings”. The story is as reported but in that instance they hadn’t actually pinched any yards at all.
Harry Potts...anti-football. Good lad.

Re: 1960 European Cup Special
Raymond Copa won European footballer of the year and played also for Real Madrid.
One of my greatest moments at the Turf was seeing Kevin Keegan desperate and spluttering in the final few minutes of us beating Liverpool 1-0 in the League Cup in the mid-70's. How the mighty have fallen at Turf Moor!

Often referred to as stockings and when we played at Manchester United the programme would also refer to us wearing white knickers.Steve1956 wrote:Stockings! ...Brilliant

The good old days when PC meant someone who you saw on the streets and kept out of the way of in case you upset him or her.ClaretTony wrote:Often referred to as stockings and when we played at Manchester United the programme would also refer to us wearing white knickers.

Definitely kept out of his way. If you saw him coming when you were playing football on the street you legged it very quickly.Ashingtonclaret46 wrote:The good old days when PC meant someone who you saw on the streets and kept out of the way of in case you upset him or her.
