Fred Smith - suffering with dementia
Just read that former right-back Fred Smith has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and is in the early stages. Fred is 76 now and would have played a great deal more for us than he did but for John Angus.
Best wishes to him and his wife Jean.

Damn shame. Too many sufferers of this wasting disease. The person and the family lost, to each other.
May his 'early stages' last a long, long time.

Saw Fred play several times for Burnley and as Tony said that but for the impeccable John Angus he would have started many more times.
Best wishes Fred and Jean

I think it was at QPR in that run of eight consecutive wins that he headed a cannonball shot off the line. It knocked him back into the net.

I saw Fred play several times. As others say, he would have been a regular but for Nudger. Best of luck to him.

Horrible news. Good luck to him and his loved ones.
I think IanMcl's words sum this wretched illness up very well: "The person and the family lost, to each other."

Good luck Fred.
Is this anything to do with the footballs they used back then?
