This is superb news, I was convinced he would leave this summer. I suspect this also means Joe Hart will be leaving?

Great news-have a good feeling about this window
Must mean that Hart might move with this news

Re: Big news ? New deal for Pope
This to me suggests Dyche sees him as our number 1. Heaton on his way then maybe? Pretty sure neither of them will be willing to be a number 2 for us.
Re: Big news ? New deal for Pope
Really positive news. The goalkeeping department couldn’t be stronger.

Brilliant news. Pope and Heats to battle it out for the number 1 shirt. Usually lucky to have one talented keeper but two ........ job is, indeed, a good 'un!

Re: Big news ? New deal for Pope
I would like the Nick Pope of 2018 be our no1, but SD is nothing if not loyal. I should imagine Tom will either start the season in goal, or be leaving. Despite my preference for Nick, I hope he stays.jrgbfc wrote:This to me suggests Dyche sees him as our number 1. Heaton on his way then maybe? Surprising news, but brilliant news.
Re: Big news ? New deal for Pope
Cos I don't think Pope would be in a rush to sign a new deal if he felt he was going to be sitting on the bench.cricketfieldclarets wrote:How?
Re: Big news ? New deal for Pope
Fantastic Retention. Heaton might be looking over his shoulder now at the length of the contract Pope has signed, and other clubs may be sniffing at him. Unfortunate but time stands still for no man....

Re: Big news ? New deal for Pope
It protects him though and sets him up for life. Had he not done that and then not played again this year he wouldn't have commanded half as much nor got a big move.jrgbfc wrote:Cos I don't think Pope would be in a rush to sign a new deal if he felt he was going to be sitting on the bench.
I think its a wise move. Actually hope we loan him out this year ready for next season.

Re: Big news ? New deal for Pope
Calm down lads. We have and need two superb keepers. They will step up in July, SD & Billy Mercer will decide who is keeping better then.
Sorry and thanks to Joe Hart but it was always likely to be short term.

Re: Big news ? New deal for Pope
Hmmmm. I think this may precipitate Heaton leaving and in a straight shoot-out between the two of them I'd prefer to keep Tom.

Re: Big news ? New deal for Pope
Excellent news. There's no reason why Heaton should be leaving. A club in our position should have at least 2 players challenging for each position.

Re: Big news ? New deal for Pope
Cracking news.
I think the Black Cloud chasers on here have covered all the negatives...... Heaton No2, Heaton off and we'll get more money for Pope now.

Re: Big news ? New deal for Pope
It's not realistic for a club like us to have 2 such good keepers. For the big clubs who play lots of cup games there is the chance to keep 2 good keepers happy but we aren't in that position.Rileybobs wrote:Excellent news. Re: Big news ? New deal for Pope
Why isn't it realistic? We had, and still do, have three high calibre goalkeepers at the club. I think we need to lose one of them but there's no reason why it should be our club captain and current number one.jrgbfc wrote:It's not realistic for a club like us to have 2 such good keepers. Re: Big news ? New deal for Pope
There is absolutely no way a keeper of Popes or Heatons calibre will be willing to sit in the bench when they could be playing week in week out elsewhere in the prem
Re: Big news ? New deal for Pope
But if either Heaton or Pope sit on the bench for any period they'll want out as it will damage their careers.Rileybobs wrote:Why isn't it realistic? Re: Big news ? New deal for Pope
OK let's say for arguments sake we start next season with Pope in goal. If you're Tom Heaton, with a good few years left in you yet are you happy to sit on the bench every week and relinquish your place in the England squad? I know I wouldn't be.Rileybobs wrote:Why isn't it realistic? We had, and still do, have three high calibre goalkeepers at the club. Re: Big news ? New deal for Pope
I'm not worried about it! Just disagreeing with people saying we'll be able to keep them both happy. It's not a decision I'd like to make tbh, but I suppose that's why Mr Dyche gets paid the big buckscricketfieldclarets wrote:Don't worry about it! Its good news not bad news!

If you gave (some) Burnley fans the Pope, they would say why isn't it Jesus.

Totally agree
Re: Big news ? New deal for Pope
I think he's our best keeper, it's just so tough on Heaton to drop him after the form he showed. I wonder if this is to potentially sell him for more? I didn't think so when I read Pope's comments but Dyche saying “We have always said we want to be strong in the market and that includes when it comes to other clubs trying to get our players.'' maybe i've misinterpreted what he meant though.
