Re: Chernobyl
I’ve been watching this. Harrowing and brilliant. Nothing better to show people the impact of communism - only the Russians use a reactor with normal water and graphite to moderate the reaction, meaning they can use cheaper normal uranium as fuel instead of enriched uranium. Penny wise, pound foolish.
P.s. Google Maps is brilliant for clicking on things in that area and looking at the user comments, lots of jokes about it being a great day trip because you get to grow a third eye free of charge, that sort of thing.

Re: Chernobyl
Honestly one of the best things I've ever watched.
Episode 4 however has traumatised me beyond belief.
I knew nothing about the disaster before viewing this show as it happened before I was born but wow, hard to believe its a true story. Some very brave people did some truly heroic things to minimise the destruction of that event.

For anyone who wants to read about a British Nuclear scientist view of the program and its realty .
On Twitter @clairecorkhill , there are photos from the time and explanations on the science behind some events.

Two of the three guys who went in to open the valves are still alive today. One still works in the nuclear industry.Hibsclaret wrote:Interesting seeing how Gorbachov is portrayed and how flippantly he deals with how 3 men are going to certain death, along with his disdain for info from the scientist. Makes you realise the pressure of dealing with a situation effecting potentially millions of lives. Not sure how our indecisive politicians would deal with something like this. Hopefully, we will never need to know.

Re: Chernobyl
If you've been watching the series, the Chernobyl podcasts after each episode are well worth a listen. It's basically a discussion between the host and the creator and they go into detail of how they researched and made the show.

Re: Chernobyl
Had to log in just to add my recommendation for this programme.
That last episode was gripping stuff and I had to keep reminding myself that this all actually happened and not long ago and not far away.

After a few concerns from the first episode, I finished the series last night and on a whole it was brilliant.

the japanese incident wasnt that bad really, bit of panic set in and the levels of radioactivity were minimal.NottsClaret wrote:Same in the area around Fukushima. Nature seems to prefer a big pit of smouldering radiation to actually having mankind live amongst it. Although of course we made that too.

Re: Chernobyl
I remember Chernobyl but was in Belize at the start of a 6 month tour when it happened.
My wife and family were in Colchester and briefed about precautionary measures that may needed to have been taken.
Terrifying yet compelling account of the disaster and the potential it had in the following days to change the world forever.
Excellent series which I have recorded for posterity.

Re: Chernobyl
There's lots of real footage on YouTube that show the TV series is very very realistic. It took 600'000 people to clean the site up including 3'828 cadets who worked on the 3 roofs in shifts of 90 seconds.
