I've been to the exclusion zone and Pripyat. It's well visited these days but an absolutely fascinating place nonetheless.

One of our younger lads at work was raving about the programme, then came out with the gem "apparently it's based on true events " . He's not the brightest.

My brother worked on it (special effects) can see his name on the credits.

Have not watched the programme but I know someone who’s there this weekend as a tourist

Just watched three episodes on the bounce,gripping stuff,if it wasnt fact,you wouldn't believe that that could happen.

I remember the radio active clouds causing issues in Cumbria and other places. Also I remember my youngest daughter was a tiny baby and when the rain that might be contaminated came over Burnley we made sure her pram was really well covered and nothing could touch her. It was a scary time.

Compelling viewing about the two biggest superpowers on earth at that time.

The USSR tried to cover up potentially the end of western Europe and the USA couldn't understand the enormity of the Jihadist movement.

Wheb it happened. I was two year old out in the pram with my parents on the canal at barlick. (Obviously i dont remember). But my mum said it was raining and she had a white dress on and the rain was black and marked it.

Terrible event. Some of the workers and firefighters were incredibly brave. Cant imagine how bad it wouldve been but for them. Will watch this.

Saw a documentary recently about it. Sure it was guy martin but may have been someone else.

Wanted to go before when we were in Ukraine. Funnily enough nobody fancied it

I have watch Chernobyl, I remember well when it happened.
I remember the artist impression in the papers explaining that if the core melted down , no- one knew how to prevent that melting to the core of the earth. I always assumed that the core must not have melted down but it appears it did and now we are finding out how the Russians prevented a worldwide disaster.

It was the event that made me 100% against nuclear power.

Hundreds of Russians had to sacrifice themselves to stop Chernobyl killing millions.

Exactly why I don’t like Nuclear Power ( although the deterrent issue is something else). The consequences of something going wrong are catastrophic.

Exactly, there have been 4 major accidents I know off.

Windscale in the 50’s, if a local MP had not forced filters to be put on the chimneys the North West of England would still be uninhabitable today. They are still working on trying to decommission that part of the plant.

3 mile island in America, know nothing about this one.

Chernobyl which could have killed over 50-60 million people, I am learning a lot more about it due to the program that’s on .

Fukushima , an Engineering disaster. They predicted a tsunami of 15 meters every 100 years and built sea defences 7 meters high (not sure the figures are correct but it’s the jist of what happened) sea defences got swamped and left with no power they could not shut down the reactors. Not sure if by design or luck they didn’t make Japan uninhabitable.

When you consider the half life of some of the radioactive material is 50,000 years, it’s a risk to great for me.

The issue our kids will have deal with is all the drums of nuclear waste we have dumped in the oceans. It is going to have to be recovered and dealt with properly

I went there a couple of years ago. Fascinating - if a bit of a long trip from Kiev - took all day and, by the standards of The Ukraine, it was reasonably pricey. Pripyat is haunting to say the least.

Pripyat football ground's stand is still - just about - standing. If anybody does go, make sure your tour visits the Duga radar site as well which is fascinating. The programme has been brilliant so far - just enough docu and just enough drama.

I found the firemen melting from the outside due to severe radiation exposure horrific, but the makeup people did an incredible job of making them look so bad.

Not to downplay the seriousness of such pollution of an area, but that's specific to the area directly over the reactor core. They're talking about reducing the 30km zone.

It would be a shame if they normalise it too much too quickly. Apart from anything else, it's become a wonderful nature reserve.

Watching the series, on episode 3.Didnt seem like they had a lot of choice, eg the coal miners marched off at gunpoint to tunnel under the reactor core. Equally as fascinating as an insight into the latter days of Communism in Europe.

It’s excellent if not quite the frenzied “ w@nk fest” the luvvies would have you believe . ( ok I mean the huge sky publicity machine ) It’s a very good re-telling , seemingly forensically accurate in the important details and a great cast . Everyone speaking in English regional accents is a bit unnerving but you soon get past that

Agreed difficult to know if they were forced or agreed due to knowing the circumstances, the program kind of leaves that open.

I have been reading more detail today and 2 of the 3 guys who went in to open the water valves are still alive today.. that I find amazing.

Same in the area around Fukushima. Nature seems to prefer a big pit of smouldering radiation to actually having mankind live amongst it. Although of course we made that too.

I think the lack of unnecessary Ukrainian / Russian accents is one of the many great touches. We know where it's set.

He’s the FX Supervisor. His team do all the special effects.

Started watching it yesterday, don't know why they call it Cheernobyl, it's well bleak.

Anyone watched episode 4 yet?? If you are into this then HBO have a mini series called The Hot Zone re the Ebola Virus outbreak....worth watching!!!

Interesting seeing how Gorbachov is portrayed and how flippantly he deals with how 3 men are going to certain death, along with his disdain for info from the scientist. Makes you realise the pressure of dealing with a situation effecting potentially millions of lives. Not sure how our indecisive politicians would deal with something like this. Hopefully, we will never need to know.

Just watched the pilot episode, looks really good as a series. It’s a bit ‘tele’ at times with some ropey acting, but that’s reflected with some brilliant scenes and good characters.

The central cast don't come into the series until the second episode. The performances of the three leads are brilliant.

I’ll watch the others. The first episode was great mostly. Some of the peripheral characters looked like they were acting in 999:Livesavers
and some of the script was like spoon-feeding those who didn’t know what the show is about at times too. From the sounds of it, we’ll be past that point now and the series can get going.

Anyway of watching this on bt or online? Dont have sky.

The sacrifices they made are simply amazing.
