What an incredible picture - the second one.

They need to restrict permits straight away. You can't survive long enough at that altitude to wait in a queue.

Couldn’t believe it when I saw that second pic on the news. Crazy!

If people want to take the risk, then let them crack on. Everyone going up knows this will
be the case.

Need to limit the number and possibly even calibre of climbers doing it.

For the sake and the mountains!

The thread title was only missing a comma and a question mark to make it quite appropriate

If 200+ try to summit on the same day it’s always gonna end in tears (or death) for some. The 200 have to go up/ down on one rope. Utter madness but that’s what happens when people get desperate due to a small weather window.

Then there’s people with money who think that £60k will guarantee a summit regardless of experience/fitness.

Lottery.

It's incredibly polite of the mountaineers to wait in a queue in freezing cold temperatures and low oxygen atmosphere to reach the summit.
I wish these people would teach the low life's a thing or two who stampede the new year's sales on Oxford Street each 1st Jan.

The Sherpas are the ones who truly suffer in this. Sitting in a queue with their clients being exploited in the world's most dangerous job.

Everest is a'll a bit "yesterday". Go and try the limestone face at Malham Cove...it's probably harder and you can get there on a bike, and can leave your bag with a mate at the bottom.

Not quite the same " look at me! " value though.

Mind you the wait for a weather window in Yorkshire can be worse than in Nepal I gather.

I was wondering if Climate Change affects these things.

I would have thought the glaciers in the region would be melting perhaps making things less harsh.

Similarly, in a few years time we won't be able to visit the North Pole except on a ship. If Scott and his colleagues had had the good sense to wait a bit they could have done it. The South Pole will be in a field. Some bloke will be cutting the grass on a weekly basis without a passing thought to history.

My brother-in-law died on Everest, Juan Jose Polo Carbayo May 20th 2012 aged 43.
Chobulous wrote:Utterly incredible. Just goes to show that the supply of useless adrenaline freaks is endless
He was chasing a dream and he made it to the top, he died coming down.

His body is still there.

None of us knew the real danger of loss of life when he went, we saw him at Christmas and he said he wouldn't be coming home that Easter as he was going to climb Everest, we were all like "Wow, cool, see you in Summer" but we didn't.

I'd close it down, the sad fact is if you turn up with a few grand or more someone will (attempt to) take you up.
You're responsible for buying and carrying your own oxygen so queues like that are literally the death of many climbers, as we are seeing again this year.
Unfortunately, there's no way of knowing who can or can't make it up to the top and back, too many variables, some people who have climbed Everest before have died too, it chews up pro-mountaineers as much as the tourist ones.

Sorry to hear that. Terrible.

I love the wild. Adventures. Mountains etc. And am stupidly competetive at times. Plenty of climbs on my bucket list. But not a chance id even bother thinking about never mind attempting everest or k2 or similar.

And for the more slightly more-affluent, but still budget-minded queue enthusiasts, a similar, but safer, experience is usually available on Striding Edge, Sharp Edge, or Crib Goch on most Bank Holidays, especially if the weather is nice.

i assumed climbing everest involved proper know how, use of ropes and hook things, walking across gaping holes on a horizontal ladder etc.

seemingly its a doddle if all those folk are just waiting to walk to the summit. Bit like snowdon, nothing too taxing.

That last bit being key, wouldn't have recommended Striding Edge for the inexperienced this weekend as it's been grim in the Lakes.

It's always going to be harsh at 30,000 feet. -20 is a baking hot day up there.

Everest has 4G connection.
And people actually use the dead bodies on there to help them stay on the correct route.

I hate to admit it as dont typically agree with or like that sort of thing. But actually like the railway and shop on snowdon. Think its been done pretty tastefuly.
