A party that did not exist 6 weeks ago winning a national election.
The BBC trying to brush it under the carpet.
The carpet is looking increasingly inadequate!

Looks like I was too generous to the "big two" earlier:
Definitely leave 35%
Definitely stay 40%
F*** knows what you're voting for 25%
Turnout almost exactly half of what the referendum drew.
Still, clearly, no obvious outcome or guidance as to what we want. Because we want different things.

People who know what they are talking about and reckoning this up as 55% remain/45% leave.
Its obviously still a bit early, but there isn't an overwhelming mandate here, which was what I suspect everyone was hoping for one way or the other.
Lab and Cons doing so badly though suggests both are going to have to seriously rethink, and both don't want an election anytime soon.
Maybe they will agree a joint Brexit deal?
Who knows?

This is you agreeing to the first part of what I said.martin_p wrote:Well, one pro Brexit, one pro Remain and one who voted remain but now says we should leave. I’m not sure how a panel of three could be more fairly split.
Which was-
"2008- Labour bail out the banks and saves London based bankers jobs. Costing the nation billions.
The EU says , " that's fine."
2019- The tories want to save thousands of steel workers jobs in the industrial north. Costing the nation millions.
The EU says, "No can do , UK"
Like the old Real Labour MPs always said, "the EU is a bankers club."
Bailing out British Steel does not comply with EU law. In other words, as I said, "the EU says - " No can do"
I'm now quoting directly from the actual letter sent to the government from its legal advisors.
"We cannot demonstrate the necessary commerciality required by State Aid Law to provide such support"
In other words , perhaps "simplistic", The EU says, "No can do , UK"
"There is no evidence that any earlier funding options involving government would have been lawful either"
In other words , The EU says, "No can do , UK"
"It would be unlawful to provide a guarantee or loan"
In other words , The EU says, "No can do , UK"
"We do not believe there is currently any level of investment government could make ( above the State Aid de minis of €200000 that could be deemed commercial and so legal"
In other words , The EU says, "No can do , UK"
It was not possible to fund a traditional loan financing that would be deemed to be successfully commercial to meet the State Aid commerciality threshold"
In other words , The EU says, "No can do , UK"
https://mobile.twitter.com/SimonClarkeM" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ... 1516826626
It proves my "simplistic" point to be accurate and correct and concurs with what Dr Ruth Bender, Associate Professor of Corporate Financial Strategy, said when she was interviewed on Radio 5 Live Breakfast show on 31st March.
"Do EU rules prevent state aid to save British Steel?
"Unfortunately, yes."
And it proves you to be once again.
Wrong.

Who's saying that? Putting aside the low turnout and just working on what we're getting that means splitting the Con / Lab vote 2/3rd remain to 1/3rd leave. Given those are both parties in theory committed to seeing through the referendum, that seems unlikely. In particular, I'd say nearly all Con voters are leavers - although I'd think they're at the softer end if they're still voting Con.Lancasterclaret wrote:People who know what they are talking about and reckoning this up as 55% remain/45% leave.

Thats up there with 80% of the voters endorsed leaving in 2017, which is why both the Conservatives and Labour have been absolutely destroyed this time around. (though Cons have lost a lot to Brexit, they have lost to Lib Dems/Green as well)Clarets4me wrote:Both Con/Lab stood at the last General Election as accepting the Brexit vote, so 490k against 354k in Wales in favour of leaving ...
No clear mandate, but backs up the opinion polls that remain is ahead of leave now.

I've already said that I don't think this changes anything, as the country is still split down the middle.
Course, that makes it even harder for anyone to sort this out.

Completely discarding the Con/Lab votes in Wales is no more a reasonable interpretation than lumping them all in to 'Leave' based on the by-now ancient history of 2016 manifestos. Your end point that it's not a leave voting region is just not supported by the data and, I think, reflects your wish. It's just impossible to say.Lancasterclaret wrote:And there is a reason I highlighted Wales

But he's asking the wrong question. The political landscape in 2014 bears no relation to what we have now. In any case, what would his answer mean? If we had 24 Brexit MEPs and then voted to Leave in 2016, does 25+ mean we're even more committed to Brexit? The popular vote suggests not.

Chaos. The proposed second referendum usually is mooted as a choice between Leaving on May's deal, or not leaving at all. Emily Thornberry was quite specific about that - the policy of leaving no matter what, voted for by about 35% today, will not be offered.Mrpotatohead wrote:What happens if remain wins a second referendum? Because 65% at least don't want it.
Whatever Farage says, "No Deal" is not anything other than a minority view.
Big one mind, but a minority view.
But we are getting to the stage where we have to accept that we won't/cannot/are Ringo agree and do something.

Yes. It will. It's really clear.
Obviously there were no "Revoke A50" MEPs in 2014. It rather supports that it's a pointless question which is looking at things through yesterday's viewpoint.
