Sleeping Tablets
Sleeping Tablets
I am really struggling with sleep due to depression and stress. I am apprehensive about taking something to help with sleep but it's getting really hard to get a good rest.
Just wondering what experiences people might have and can it cause issues with long term natural sleep if you stop using them.

Re: Sleeping Tablets
when i was suffering with sciatica the doctor prescribed me amitriptyline for evening use they used to knock me out ..think this medication is used for depression also.. Hope you get sorted..
Re: Sleeping Tablets
I used zopiclone for a number of years, mainly due to illnesses that prevented sleep. I would never push people towards medication, but I didn't have any adverse effects from zopiclone. They gave me good, restful sleep and I was able to gradually come off them without much difficulty. Of course, that is just one person's experience, but I would say they do offer a short term solution and remove one source of anxiety (not sleeping).
Re: Sleeping Tablets
Sorry to hear you are struggling man.
I had similar issues myself and a couple three things helped me :-
1. If you’ve not been to see your doctor then go see them. It’s really important that you do and take their advice.
2. Exercise helped me. I went for long walks accompanied with podcasts to listen to. Helped hugely.
3. I occasionally used phenergan to help me sleep. None addictive, antihistamine. Worked for me.

Re: Sleeping Tablets
Have you been to the Doctor about the depression and stress? That sounds to be the root cause of your problem sleeping, hopefully if you can get assistance in solving that, sleep will be a welcome byproduct.
A colleague of mine was prescribed sleeping tablets, alongside certraline, for a short period. The Doctor won’t now prescribe more sleeping tablets though - which appears to have been the correct decision (it was the anxiety that was the cause of the problem, which the certraline has helped to level).
Have you tried the max strength over the counter products, like Nightol? They may help you to get a good nights sleep for the time being, whilst you get the anxiety and depression under control.
It’s a vicious circle with sleep and anxiety / depression. The less sleep you have, the more likely you are to feel anxious or depressed.
Talk, exercise, eat right, drink less and see your Doctor.
Best of luck.

Re: Sleeping Tablets
I find this works for me.
Breathe in slowly until you completely fill your lungs then hold as long as possible.
Then exhale very slowly until drained and hold as long as possible
Repeat as long as necessary.
I guess it is oxygen deprivation that makes it work?
Sit down and work out how you can get the stress out of your life. Whether it is work, relationship, family, etc., there will be a solution that is best for YOU. If it is affecting you badly you might have to make a hard choice that is better for you long term. Good luck.

Re: Sleeping Tablets
I find it frustrating when people say if you are depressed then speak to somebody.
I have been depressed and thank goodness, come out of the other end of it but the last thing you want to do when are in a depressed state of mind is to speak to anybody about how you are feeling.
When I came out of depression, I set myself little goals (very little goals) that gave me some self belief and confidence. Lack of sleep is standard when depressed as your over thinking everything.
Set about 5 little goals every day and have them wrote down and make sure by the end of the day you complete them (tick or cross them off) it will give you a sense of completion and pride in yourself.

Re: Sleeping Tablets
depression and anxiety is the pits. Exercising daily has helped me loads. Also eating well and avoiding too much alcohol. My sleep is not always great but I do get enough. Try sleeping in in a cool.dark room. Set an alarm to wake up so that the light from the clock doesnt disturb you. Have a shower before bed and perhaps listen to relaxing music. All this stuff has helped me. Exercise and natural outdoors light will help a lot. good luck, you will get there.
ps I also took zopiclone for a while and they had no adverse side effects. When at my worse I took an anti histemine or something which had a side effect of sleep. My doctor said they could knock out a bull elephant.

Re: Sleeping Tablets
I’ve found podcasts help me sleep - The one person I find always sends me off the the land of z’s Is Graham Hancock.
He was on Joe Rogan the other week and it’s taken me about 2 weeks to get an hour into the podcast as I keep nodding off listening to it before bed.

Re: Sleeping Tablets
I'm on trazodone 150mg every night and it most definitely helps. I wish you well in your recovery.
Re: Sleeping Tablets
Walt, the walking is brilliant, like others have said that should really help. A pushbike may also help, especially with the lighter nights. Good luck. I hope things pick up for you.
