Great news for the lad, hope he's as good for them as he's been for us.
Are any of these games broadcast on telly?

Re: Dwight McNeil in under-20s
I’m pretty sure someone will explain it to me and probably make me look foolish but sometimes I don’t understand why a player like Dwight gets called up for the u20’s and not the u21’s?
It’s a fantastic achievement and to be clear, I’m not in any way casting a cloud over it, but there were at least 2 names on the u21’s squad list that I didn’t recognise and who I’m certain haven’t played any first team Premier League football.
Like I say, I don’t follow these things in any great depth and my 8 year old son could probably shoot me down in flames, but my question is - is Dwight not good enough for the u21 squad if, indeed, there is such a hierarchy?

Re: Dwight McNeil in under-20s
The u21s are in a UEFA finals and they've stuck largely with the squad that has seen them go through the qualifications. That's usually the case.Cheshireclaret wrote:I’m pretty sure someone will explain it to me and probably make me look foolish but sometimes I don’t understand why a player like Dwight gets called up for the u20’s and not the u21’s?

Splendid - I knew there’d be a simple explanation that a simpleton like me couldn’t fathom. I’m hearing your reply in my 8 year old son’s voice as well accompanied by a shake of the head, a roll of the eyes and a sarcastic chuckleClaretTony wrote:The u21s are in a UEFA finals and they've stuck largely with the squad that has seen them go through the qualifications. Is it what used to be known as the Toulon tournament years ago?

Re: Dwight McNeil in under-20s
I hadn't realised that when I wrote the article and saw this Maurice Revello Tournament, but it is what was called the Toulon Tournament previously. He started the tournament in 1967 and it was given his name following his death in 2016.jrgbfc wrote:Is it what used to be known as the Toulon tournament years ago?

Great news and playing in these games, assuming he is picked, can only provide him with valuable experiences. I know there is an argument for him having a long break from playing before pre season but representative football is good for him and good for the club.

I can see the Under-20s World Cup is going on at the moment, aren't we the holders of this competition? Surely we should be involved in this as well but seems we aren't.

Re: Dwight McNeil in under-20s
Also I think when Ashworth and Southgate started this England set up about 8 years ago the plan was for each age group to go through the years together. So this u21 have mostly always been together. 1 step away from the full squad they probably feel adding McNeil in is a bit too early for him. What with never until the last call up been around the training base and seen how it all operates. Most of these lads have been in the same time team for the last 5 years. Its a good way of doing it and a model Germany and Spain have used for many years.Cheshireclaret wrote:I’m pretty sure someone will explain it to me and probably make me look foolish but sometimes I don’t understand why a player like Dwight gets called up for the u20’s and not the u21’s?

England won the previous tournament in South Korea, but can not defend their title after losing 3–0 to Norway in a play-off for the final qualifying place at the 2018 UEFA European Under-19 Championship in Finland. England are the sixth consecutive champions to have failed to qualify for the subsequent U-20 World Cup.
Re: Dwight McNeil in under-20s
The Toulon Tournament is one of the most prestigious "unofficial" youth competitions. When I say "unofficial" it's not run by UEFA or FIFA. There's no qualifying. But it has a very good reputation and apparently this will be the 47th year of the competition.

Freesports is on my IPTV so will have streams available.
The camera angle isn't the best but Dwight will be playing on the near side 2nd half so should show him a lot better.

Currently 1-1. Chalobah scoring from a McNeil corner in the first half. Japan equalising early in the 2nd.
Sluggish stuff so far. McNeil involved well.

McNeil looks a class above his England team mates.
They just need to give him the ball as much as possible.

Japan looked a decent side to be fair but England should of snatched a draw at the end. About 5 chances when we actually went for it.ClaretTony wrote:Not good was it although Dwight did well
McNeil looked head and shoulders above the rest of the England lads. It's hard to judge him in the premier league at times playing against such quality but standing out at international level for your age group is a good sign.

Re: Dwight McNeil in under-20s
Just my opinion but I think that at virtually any other time, Dwight would have been in the U21s. But England has an exceptional generation. Whether or not they go on to have good careers is another matter but he's up against very good competition. On the other hand, there is this tournament which is well respected and here he seems guaranteed to start. Much better than being sat watching others play. In my humble opinion.

Re: Dwight McNeil in under-20s
The FA gets rightly pilloried for many things, but clearly the investment in St George's Park has been justified, with the sheer amount of young talent at all the age ranges that England have been producing in recent years.ecc wrote:Just my opinion but I think that at virtually any other time, Dwight would have been in the U21s. Decent showing for Dwight and an assist to boot,he usually seems to affect a game positively.
Can only improve his confidence and belief to be involved in tournaments like this, and will enhance his development, which clearly helps BFC.
