Ross McCormack
Ross McCormack
Read on Twitter that it’s 615 days since he last played for Villa, but following promotion, his wage has now gone up to £70k a week, with a year still left on his contract.
Utter madness.

He wont be the only one. Likes of Lansbury will have similar deals. Not saying as much but will probably double their wages. Bet theres at least 5 or 6 like

Re: Ross McCormack
They've finally managed to get rid of Micah Richards though, he's not played since October 2016 which must be over 950 days. At least McCormack has been playing football on loan at a few clubs.
And I believe the Remco van der Schaaf story to be true - I'm told he was our highest paid player in the Premier League in 2009/10.

A player signs the contact on the clubs terms, yet they are painted as the bad guys when they are frozen out the squad. I presume its because the club want to save money on appearance fees and bonuses.
I'd love to know the real reason behind Remco van der Schaff though.

Re: Ross McCormack
In fairness all sorts of silly offers were probably made to players, similar to VDS' terms, because the club never realistically thought they would have to honour them.
Free season tickets being an offer of that ilk.

Re: Ross McCormack
I can only assume there was a problem between him and the manager. When he had shoulder surgery the manager refused to discuss it when asked by the local media. Coyle had a press conference on the day we signed him. Asked about him at the morning press conference he said he'd never heard of Remco van der Schaaf. He signed for us in the afternoon.claptrappers_union wrote:I'd love to know the real reason behind Remco van der Schaff though.

I suppose, it's one of those taboos in football. Who is signing players, the manager or somebody else? So sometimes it might be unfair for Coyle to carry the can for signing crap players. However there must've been internal clashes when he didn't play him.ClaretTony wrote:I can only assume there was a problem between him and the manager. Same with Fernando Guerrero and Frédéric Nimani. I can't imagine Coyle (or Laws) signing either of those players.

Re: Ross McCormack
If there was an issue between VDS and Coyle, why did it apparently presist when Laws came in? (Unless VDS really was a right tool!!!) You'd have thought, with relegation looming large, a manager would be trying anything and everything and giving your highest earner a few games would seem to make a bit of sense. (to me)

Obviously there were some players who were signed by the manager... or at least signed when he went to Bolton - Stuart Holden and Vladimír Weiss - both on trial at Burnley before Coyle left.

I have the utmost respect for Sean Dyche.
However, at the time of his appointment, there was one major concern I had, 'cos I recalled that this was the guy who had paid money to Burnley for Chris Iwelumo.
He can spot and improve defenders, he's able to bring on goalkeepers and he makes us difficult to beat, but I'm still not convinced he can spot a striker.

Andre Gray - £6m (rising to £9m with promotion) - sold for double that.
Plus though he did not buy Vokes or Ings he got out of both of them more than any other previous managers had and also made the best part of £15m profit. Neither would have been worth anywhere near what we sold or got for them in the case of Ings without the seasons they had under Dyche.
Profits from Gray, Ings and Vokes more than paid for Chris Wood.
He’s not done that bad (and I know I haven’t mentioned Vydra, Wells, etc but I am responding to your point he can’t spot a striker)

Re: Ross McCormack
Apart from Ashley Barnes, Chris Wood and Andre Gray, what have the Romans done for us.
The point I was trying and failing to make is that SD has brought in lesser known defensive players like Pope and Tarkowski and, with the aid of his staff, turned them into England Internationals.
He hasn't had the same success from the strikers brought in. Ashley Barnes, Chris Wood and Andre Gray were top level championship players, and yes they've improved but there hasn't been the step change seen in defensive players.
The lesser known players brought in who play higher up the pitch don't seem to have blossomed to the extent that the defenders have. I guess what I should have said is that I'm still not convinced he can spot a strikers potential.
....and I still can't get over he actually signed Chris Iwelumo from us, although I believe he was good in the dressing room.

Re: Ross McCormack
Mick McCarthy signed Iwelumo too and played him in the Premier League. So sorry you can’t get over him signing for Watford because it is certainly blighting your view.
Barnes is hugely improved from the player we signed for virtually peanuts. I bet Brighton would have liked him in their team last season.
He didn’t sign them but how massively both Vokes & Ings improved under Dyche. Gray improved, JBG has and then there is Hendrick and Arfield. Shame you’ve missed all that because Watford signed Iwelumo.

Re: Ross McCormack
Iwelumo was very good for us goals wise.
It's just his legs had gone, so he wasn’t able to affect games as much with his all round game.
Pretty similar to Barnes and Wood now. Goal record is very good but could do better keeping the ball up top.

Re: Ross McCormack
A strike rate of 1 in 10 when he was at Watford, for big Chris. I'm comfortable with my view.
Should it surprise me that the point has been lost that there has not been a step change in the performance (when compared to Goalkeepers / Defenders) of the strikers signed. Yes there has been improvement - I wouldn't try to deny that. it's just at a lesser level, in particular the 2 you quote Ings and Vokes. Massively - that's subjective. Ings to me improved the most, but then he had the most potential, the potential spotted by the previos manager.
No issue with the midfield players you mention, but then again my point was about strikers. You may notice that if you (re-)read my post.
Let me finish as I started: I have the utmost respect for Sean Dyche.

That's a big lump of wages Villa will have had to pay out, I presume at a discount so he can go and play somewhere else. But still, 70K a week, take 60K a week upfront? £3M minimum just to move him on...
Re: Ross McCormack
You wonder what's happened, maybe an illness has done him. This player was a goal machine and then nothing.

Re: Ross McCormack
he had a fantastic season with Cardiff too but amazingly in his first season at Leeds he didn't score his first goal until the next to last match of the season (no surprise it was against us). He fell out with the manager at Villa and they basically pushed him out of the way. Whether he'd ever have been good enough to play in the Premier League we'll never now know.Garnerssoap wrote:He was quite good at Leeds and Fulham. Think we had a nibble for him a while ago

Re: Ross McCormack
Don’t think it’s too unfair to say that Dyche has been excellent with goalkeepers, excellent with defenders, decent with midfield and a bit hit and miss with strikers. But that’s in line with how we play, and strikers are typically hit and miss at this level anyway. Generally? His domestic based strikers have been good (Wells aside, Vydra still time to prove his worth), it’s the foreign based ones that have disappointed, again in line with the club not having the appropriate knowledge out there yet.
