Pre 1975 Bfc transfer fees
Pre 1975 Bfc transfer fees
For those of us old enough to remember those days, here are some of the fees our Burnley heroes were sold for, before 1975
It's heartbreaking to believe Ray Pointer a true Clarets legend, was sold for less than £10,000, probably the weekly wage of a non descript Div 2 player.
To the likes FCBurnley, Ashington Claret, French Claret, CT, Royboy and many others of our era, it makes heartbreaking reading, comparing their worth too today's transfer fees. The total figure amounts to around £2-5 million for 53 players, averaging less than £50,000 each.
Leighton James Derby. £310,000
Martin Dobson. Everton £300,000
Ralph Coates. Spurs. £190,000
Ray Hankin. Leeds. £180,000
Dave Thomas. QPR. £165,000
Geoff Nulty. Ncstle. £130,000

Not pre-75 but just as painful.
Trevor Steven. £300k
Micky Phelan. £40k
Brian Laws. ?
Lee Dixon. Free.
Vince Overson. ?
All had super careers after leaving us but Steven was the player that everyone could see was going to play for England.

The talent Burnley had and sold when you look at that list is staggering.

Re: Pre 1975 Bfc transfer fees
Potts signed for Everton on 16th October 1950 for £20,000.
Now depending on the dates of other signings then the record at that time was either £26,500 or £30,000. It shows how high that fee actually was.

Re: Pre 1975 Bfc transfer fees
I really don't know what the point the OP is trying to make. Is it the pointless comparing of prices between then and now? Is it a trip down memory lane?
If it's the latter then fair enough, but he's also old enough to know that we produced players and then had to sell them to function financially.

I wonder how much we would get for Dwight McNeil if he has another season like last?

Re: Pre 1975 Bfc transfer fees
BOT I wrote the topic to let people have a snippet of the clubs transfer history. I for one like reading factual information like that and thought it was worth sharing with others on here.
For those of us who had seen prolific scorers, Pointer and Robson play together for Burnley, would be suprised that their total transfer income came to just over £20,000.
If you aren't old enough to have seen them play for us, I suggest you ask people you know who have, for a re action to the fees.

I was paying around 20p a pint in 1975. So that puts some of those fees into perspective.

The Leighton James fee works out at around 2.5m with inflation.
The Harry Potts record fee was about £673,000 in today's money.

Hi bfc, yes, I remember a lot of those transfers, certainly all those from mid-60s onwards. Great footballers, Claret legends most of them.Bfc wrote:For those of us old enough to remember those days, here are some of the fees our Burnley heroes were sold for, before 1975

However, "less than £10,000, probably the weekly wage of a non descript Div 2 player" is not accurate. I've read recently that weekly wage of most League Two players, now, is typically £1,500. That's still a very decent £75,000 per year - so long as your club isn't Bury....
