Sunday= pub
Monday= if you want a real walk do Scarfell Pike. Failing that Helvelyn or Old Man of Coniston.

Where’s your base? You might want to stay local on a BH.

Barley is lovely...everything you want there, with as much free parking as you can shake a stick at.

Save a fortune on parking and petrol. What's not to like?

Go to the top of Honister Pass and aim for Great Gable. It's a steep climb at first but you will soon be on the tops because you started from a high point, Don't do it if raining!

Here's a great one where you'll feel quite at home, and where you can burst into a Burnley song or two on the way up: Longside Edge

Head to Keswick. Take the ferry around Derwent Water, .maybe after hiring a rowing boat, then get off at the stop for Cat Bells.

Fantastic views over Derwent Water from even halfway up Cat Bells, plus a view of Bassenthwaite in the distance.

If you're lucky you'll see the RAF practicing in the valleys

The pencil museum is good if it's raining :)

If you’re really lucky you’ll see our more infrequent visitors, the USAF and their Eagles.

Thanks all. just back, stayed at the britannia inn near elterwater. walked a few miles round lake on sunday then today took ferry from glenriiding to howtown there and back and in between climbed that hill with the mini tower on top. someone said it was called hall something or another. pretty steep at the top and girlfriend almost bottled it. terrific views on top.
the food at the britania inn was pretty decent. breakfast excellent and huge. a couple of their staff were mediocre at best. wont be rushing back. will try somewhere else next time.

they do a lot right at that place but the lad that served me on the bar with the bun in his hair was less than motivated, as was one of the girls. Tell him that the girl with the glasses who waited our tables was excellent.

Off up to the lakes on Friday, is it possible to reach the summit of Helvellyn from Glenridding avoiding Striding edge, going to have our dog with us as don’t fancy taking her over the ridge as she is big and clumsy. We usually park on the car park by Ullswater. We havnt been for a long time and we came from Thirlmere side before so not to sure. Any help greatly obliged.

The other side of Red Tarn is Swirral Edge. The normal route is up over Striding Edge across Helvellyn summit and then down via Swirral Edge. Striding Edge is nowhere near as hairy as it's reputation. There is a lower path on the Red Tarn side to keep you off the ridge.

Longer way round, but you can also go up to Grisedale Tarn and then turn right to head up to the summit. But can't recall exactly how good/steep that path is, and obviously, make sure you've got a good OS map with you whichever way you go.

Swirrel Edge up and down will not be as hair raising as Striding Edge. If anyone is clumsy ( including dog) Striding Edge is best avoided.

Get yourself to Borrowdale, think it's quite near Keswick. You can shake hands under the Bowder Stone.
(At least you used to be able to.)

Though it is downplaying it like this that results in some people turning up to it awfully underprepared.

We could do Striding edge no problem, but there’s no way I would take dog up there, couldnt live with myself if anything happened. She is good when out and about but she is a big dog and I would worry to much. We just want a nice long walk with fantastic views, last time we went we was up and down in about 2 hours, wanting something a bit longer. Doesn’t have to be Helvellyn I suppose just thought that would have best views. Thanks for the ideas everyone.

Have a look at Fairfield Horseshoe. Should be fine for your dog.

View from top of Latrigg overlooking Keswick a couple of weeks ago was not too shabby. Had a great walk.
