Burnley v Stoke FA Cup 1980
I must have been on this game, but I can't remember a thing about it.
The January Turf Moor pitch is in lovely shape and a rare highlight in what was an otherwise pretty abysmal and joyless season and not just down to our diabolical electric blue shorts.
Excellent footage though.

Remember this game - Kevin McNally was a bit of a claret I think -good to see that horrible pundit Crooks miss a sitter at the end - tbh the 2 sendings off were harsh - and our pen looking harsh but on second view deffo took Billy H out UTC

Yep noticed that too. He must have been around 17 at the time so probably just signed after leaving St Teds.randomclaret2 wrote:David Miller in the duffel coat on the steps as the players come out
The standard on display was to put it kindly not great - but that pitch was not perfect for flowing football ! Martin Dobson stood out as the class player on the pitch. You could see that Heath was clearly one of the best players too but Garth Crooks was constantly moaning about being fouled.
Only one sub allowed too !

Dixon, Vince the Prince and Inchy all lining up against future employers. Not helped by the pitch but the quality was very poor. Great to watch though.

What a great find . Was at this match with a large group of school mates , there was quite a bit of trouble before the match I think nr the old el Greco and Cats? . The pitch is unbelievable just impossible to imagine they’d play on them these days . The standard wasn’t that totally bad taking the pitch into account , Inchy was stand out as was Dobbo , Kavanagh looked ok too.
Few things came to mind :
The actual atmosphere and loud singing
Playing on a quagmire
Hardly any actual diving/blatant cheating
Just 1 kid mascot
Good pace game for the conditions
Back passes picked up and whacked into oblivion
Garth Crooks was a moaning bellend even then

Didn’t think that was Lee Dixon - thought they said someone else in the commentarywelsbyswife wrote:Dixon, Vince the Prince and Inchy all lining up against future employers. Not helped by the pitch but the quality was very poor. Great to watch though.

It was Paul Dixon, a young lad from Northern Ireland who played a few first team games at that time.

Re: Burnley v Stoke FA Cup 1980
A bit before my time the 1980 game, but 10 years later we had Stoke again in the Cup. Might have been the first time I'd seen us knock out a team from a higher division, set us up for the Man City game.

Usual carry on after the game back then, I remember a Stoke fan bouncing off my dad's car as we tried to get away.

Re: Burnley v Stoke FA Cup 1980
When did the fences come into play for the Longside and Bee hole end?
I just presumed they would of been up in the 70s.

Interesting that the referee was interviewed before the game. McNally released a statement post match too.

Wasn't there a floodlight failure in that game?

Remember this as well as you say first time seen us beat a team from higher division. Remember quite a bit of trouble on Tod Road after the game.NottsClaret wrote:A bit before my time the 1980 game, but 10 years later we had Stoke again in the Cup. And on the Cricket Field car park. I think for this game we had to enter via the turnstiles on Brunshaw Rd and not the ones next to the away end, as Stoke had a large following that evening.Steve-Harpers-perm wrote:Remember this as well as you say first time seen us best a team from higher division. I hope this seasons Umbro kit is better fitting.
Also, I absolutely loved that ball they were using. I used to have one, it was my pride and joy until it popped on a railing spike.

I also used to have one of those balls as a kid and always think they look great on the TV. Rock hard if you pumped it up slightly too much though. Head ache for 10 minutes after heading itMG70 wrote:I hope this seasons Umbro kit is better fitting.

I remember my uncle taking me as a young lad, he said McNally is refereeing he will send 2 Stoke players off
and give us a penalty !! I wonder what odds Ladbrokes would give today for that ..

Re: Burnley v Stoke FA Cup 1980
In the early to mid 70's there were no fences at all and you could walk freely between the Bee Hole and Longside, moving basically all the way from one corner to the diagonal one opposite. We actually used to stand on the Bee Hole when Burnley kicked that way and move round into the far Longside when they attacked the CFS. As trouble with away fans increased away supporters would either be "coralled" into a group somewhere on the Longside surrounded by the police if they were relatively small in numbers, or they would take over the far area of the Longside if there were enough of them and a line of police would (try to) keep supporters bent on trouble apart. This wasn't very effective and there were constant fights and bouts of skirmishing which was obviously a nightmare for the police, especially since the toilets behind weren't in any way segregated either. Every now and then some clubs would have such a following that they would basically take over the Longside and Burnley fans were relegated to the Bee Hole (Leeds/ Man U/ City for example). Segregation as such had never been heard of and didn't exist, but to make the job of the police easier and to make watching the game safer for the majority of the crowd, Burnley initially put up a single fence about 2 thirds of the way along the Longside. To start with, the fence had gaps (3?) where the gangways were, to allow people to walk through if the wished. Away supporters were (in theory) kept on the far side of the fence, but these gaps became the focus of fighting and were real trouble spots, even though they were heavily policed. That was probably all done about 1974 or 75. Shortly after that however, the no man's land was created by erecting the second fence a little further along and closing the gaps, meaning the far section of the Longside was accessible only to away fans using their own turnstiles. This was definitely all in place by 1978 when Celtic rolled into town!!! And the fence cutting off the Bee Hole from the Longside was there too, but that definitely still had gaps in at that time as I used one to escape from the Longside late on that fateful night!!Quickenthetempo wrote:When did the fences come into play for the Longside and Bee hole end?

Thanks for the reply Dark Cloud. I love hearing about the old stories of the Longside etcDark Cloud wrote:In the early to mid 70's there were no fences at all and you could walk freely between the Bee Hole and Longside, moving basically all the way from one corner to the diagonal one opposite. But I was looking for the answer of fences to stop fans getting on the pitch.

Ah, sorry. My memory of those is much less clear. I just remember a time when there were none and a time when they were there, but when? When Celtic visited people were able to escape and get onto the pitch weren't they?Quickenthetempo wrote:Thanks for the reply Dark Cloud. I love hearing about the old stories of the Longside etc

Googled McNally as I had a thought he got done for some dodgy dealing. Couldn’t find it but came across Stokes view of him. Including a reference to my earlier thought.

Re: Burnley v Stoke FA Cup 1980
Wasn’t the first time McNally had sent off two opposition players on the Turf, he’d done just the same two seasons earlier v Sheffield United.scouseclaret wrote:Wow - a proper homer of a ref at the Turf. Never been seen since!
Absolutely shocking referee and the ultimate homer.
Eventually sacked as a referee but I think it was due to some fraudulent activity outside of football.
