Trojans
Trojans
I use windows 10, and defender appears to be functioning. I also pay for Mcafee which I suspect I don't need. When I choose certain new features on MSN, but not sky, bbc etc, the PC sometimes goes ballistic and tells me my PC is infected and I need to do certain things which I don't. I just exit.
There appear to be a number of malware downloads that deal with this. But are they genuine?
Genuine non patronising advice would be appreciated.

Re: Trojans
I'm no computer wizard.
I run Defender & AVG Free. (I doubt you need to pay for McAfee - I believe it takes up a lot of system power)
I'm always wary of anything, other than Defender or AVG, that says my computer is infected (even that nice man on the phone t'other week) - you do right just closing it down.
The other piece of software i've always used and never had a problem with is Spybot Search and Destory. It comes up with things Def & AVG miss.
Here's the free version:
https://www.safer-networking.org/download/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Good luck

McAfee is your first issue. Stop paying for it and remove it. It's cancer.COBBLE wrote:I use windows 10, and defender appears to be functioning. I also pay for Mcafee which I suspect I don't need. As a start download this program (the free download)
https://www.malwarebytes.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Once installed open it and run a scan.
To do this go to the "Scan" open on the right, select "Thread scan" and hit "Start scan"
Should look like this
Once the scan is finished quarantine any threats it highlights.

Re: Trojans
I use Malwarebytes + Avast, both free versions.
And CCleaner to help get rid of the crap now and again. You can add cookie exceptions, so you don't lose the login for sites you visit regularly.

Re: Trojans
Yep Malwarebytes is the on a I’ve had least trouble with. Must get admit I must have tried most over the years trying the find a backup. AVG are ok if you can put up with constant alerts about everything, all the time.
Re: Trojans
If MSN is still Microsoft would you be able to contact them?
Re: Trojans

Re: Trojans
How do you completely get rid of McAfee? It keeps telling me it's run out and would I like to reinstall or ignore?
Thanks to the OP....I will be going to the malware website mentioned!

Re: Trojans
Thanks everyone. I ran Malwarebytes and got a clean bill of health which was encouraging, but from what you say is not conclusive.
At least I feel a bit more in control of the situation and will wait and see what comes next. Don't go away.

Re: Trojans
Tbh these days with window's defender etc and more secure systems you don't get as many viruses. It's not like 10 years ago when you would get a trojan/worm/keylogger every time you read an e-mail or downloaded a file.COBBLE wrote:Thanks everyone.
